all i do anymore is display symptoms
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)

i've been phasing the phrase 'google it' out of my vocabulary and going back to 'look it up'. fuck you youve lost your generic trademark privileges
seconding these tags by @ragsy: #if the social consciousness has decided that duckduckgo is the Only Othet Search Engine#might i suggest 'go duck yourself'
shit like āIām just a girlā and āgirl mathā and āgirl failureā makes my blood boil. Theyāre not harmless turns of phrase theyāre misogynistic talking points that have been abstracted enough to become palatable and āfunny,ā but not so much that they have lost their use as tools to demean women. And theyāre so insidious because they can fly under the radar. Because it can seem like harmless jokes to make with other women. But when all your jokes are contributing to a narrative of pathetic girls who canāt make themselves real dinner and donāt want to do real math and are really just 26 year old teenage girls, you have to wonder, who does this benefit? Itās like how suicide jokes reinforce poor mental health even when theyāre genuinely intended as jokes. But itās worse, because even if you know you donāt actually believe youāre ājust a girl,ā there are many, MANY people out there who do. You arenāt just negatively impacting yourself, youāre feeding a broader patriarchal narrative.
thereās something to the concept of inventing a genre of fanfiction entirely about what if gay men experienced severe reproductive coercion and hyper-restrictive misogynistic gender roles related to pregnancy (werewolves also there sometimes) (important) and it being written predominately by women and genderqueer people. but I donāt know what it is so I just have to rotate it around like a jewel to examine all the facets in the sunlight
There are gonna be people who won't like hearing this but if you want to live in a world where mixed marriages, families, and adoptions (particularly POC adopting outside their "race") aren't maligned and discriminated against, then you have got to get more chill about seeing someone partaking in something cultural that you don't think fits the "race" you perceive them as.
It's a vague memory now, it was a vague memory even at the time I made this post, but I think what sparked this was remembering stupid comments I saw about a Chinese-American cookbook that were complaining about it being written by a white woman and then I looked the white woman up and the briefest research showed she was adopted as a child into a Chinese-American family and just....
*pinches nose*
Fellas, is it cultural appropriation to inherit your family's culture but you don't pass the blood quantum test?
All of you are literally just racist. You've come full-circle. You're working under the belief that people are supposed to "keep to their own kind" and that means the socially invented concept of "race", and "race mixing" of any sort is unnatural.
What discussing Cultural Appropriation was supposed to be about: why does Cheryl get to wear Dreads to work but Tyrone doesnāt?
What it became: Segregation 2 electric boogaloo
fucked that you canāt fix other people especially when you really care about them. Oh so im just supposed to be there for you while you suffer. like a useless cunt gargoyle
"okay, but are you a nonbinary woman or a nonbinary man" im going to nonbury you in a fucking hole.
āis this character good or badā āis this ship unproblematic or notā āis this arc deserving of redemption or notā girlā¦
you can post on tumblr even when you're trying to take a break from social media it literally doesn't count. it's like pepsi max, or pescatarianism
