Not to be all "the children have forgotten the sacred texts!" but I just saw someone refer to a ship between two people who are good friends in canon as a crackship.
Hon. No. Crackship doesn't just mean "not canon". It's difficult to imagine two people who spend significant canon time together as a crackship. Crackship is when you write Galactus getting fucked by Tony the Tiger.
The notes are starting to be all, "Yeah, crackship means there's no chemistry! Even canon ships can be crackships!" and I must STRENUOUSLY disagree.
A crackship isn't just any ship that makes you go, "Eh, I don't see it." A crackship is absolutely WILD in concept. A crackship is the one that makes your friends look at you with the beginnings of existential horror. It's the one where they wave a circle round you thrice and close their eyes in holy dread, for you on honeydew hath fed and drunk the milk of paradise.
anyway I said it as a joke but if anyone wants to join my Tony the Tiger/Galactus Discord -

I saw a post on a terf blog before I blocked it from someone being like "Ummm is anybody else really concerned about the rise of antisocial kinks like pissing" and it made me laugh so hard I almost did a little antisocial kink myself
having lunch and someone's watching cnc videoes loud as fuck style so i'm just here chewing my food while there's sounds of water jetting and steel screeching in the back
Me reading "CNC": Consensual non-consent
Me reading "water jetting and steel screeching": oh so it's really niche consensual non-consent
Saw this trend and couldn’t resist XD
Y'know that fact, the one where it says 'Archaeologists found 3000 year old honey in an Ancient Egyptian tomb and they ate it because honey lasts forever'?
As an Egyptologist, it's always baffled me because uhh...there's very few tombs that were intact enough to have food stuffs in them, and even fewer where honey was involved. If someone ate honey from one of those tombs, I'm pretty sure I would know about it. I mean, I know about Petrie smelling of bat piss and being a bit nuts, why wouldn't I have ever heard the name of the archaeologist who decided to chance botulism?
So I looked it up and got a wonderful spiral of circular citation. Everyone was saying the same thing over and over again, but no one was saying who it was other than 'archaeologists in an Egyptian tomb', which was incredibly frustrating. So, giving up on that, I looked into the known intact tombs we have like Kha and Merit or Psusennes I, but neither had honey jars. Which left only one option: Tutankhamun.
His tomb contains one cylindrical alabaster jar (No.055) in which Howard Carter noted there was a 'resinous material'. Looking that jar up led me to where they'd tested it and discovered it was honey. However, there are no records of anyone tasting or eating the contents of this jar prior to it being tested decades later (y'know, when they'd invented the tech to test that stuff).
So basically, there was a jar of honey in Tutankhamun's 3300 year old tomb, but there's no evidence that Howard Carter ate any of it, especially since he notes that he cleaned the jar with xylene.
So fucking embarassed and nervous at my larp game last night. I'm so easily flustered, and I feel like I'm gonna mess everything up, and then I remind myself: We're playing pretend. We're just playing pretend. If I play pretend in a way that people don't wanna play pretend or doesn't match with things they pretended before, they'll just tell me. We're playing dolls and we're playing as the dolls and thats it and it's fun. It's so much fun, y'all.
We're just playing pretend!!
IM SORRY FOR THE WAIT 😫😫😫
The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.
Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”
shut up they did not find another goddamn king under another goddamn car park
@qqueenofhades look, another
If I had a quid for every time they found the bones of a king in a carpark, I'd have 2 quid, which isn't much, but its weird that it's happened twice
I just think we all deserve massive home libraries and a couple swords, as a treat
Everyone needs to stop saying death of the author when what they mean is separating the art from the artist. Like FR stop it.
I know it's mainly just ignorance of what the term means but I do wonder if this happens in part bcos 'death of the author' sounds so dramatic like oh this author is dead to me, I don't care about them anymore. Whereas 'separating the art from the artist' is a lot more neutral and well. In CERTAIN CASES it is kind of immediately apparent that you cannot.
TO REITERATE:
Death of the Author is a term coined by Roland Barthes for his essay of the same name in 1967.
In brief: death of the author is the concept that analysis of a work of art should not be focused on the artist's intent; the artist's intended reading of their own work is just A reading and no more valid than anyone else's.
A good straightforward example of this in practice is the response to Andy Weir and Project Hail Mary. Weir is adamant that his work contains no politics but I would say that PHM is pretty clearly a story about climate change.
You can apply death of the author to any work of fiction and it has nothing to do with whether the author is a good or bad person.
Is Tumblr aware of Count Binface, current hope for our nation?
Let me explain:
Grotesque fascist grifter, Nigel Farage, is the leader of Reform, the racist far right party he created because UKIP got what it wanted (Brexit) and it sucked.
Having tried and failed to be an MP many times (but somehow getting more screentime than any Liberal Democrat or Green politician), he finally succeeded in the last election because people were so overwhelmingly pissed off with the Conservatives, and many right-wing people saw Reform as the new Conservative Party; partly because it's full of rejects from the Conservative Party.
Speculation: he doesn't really want to be an MP, he wants to be a fascist grifter. He's annoyed by suggestions he do things like Be In His Constituency and Serve His Constituents.
He's recently been caught having accepted a VERY large amount of money from some unsavory people that he insists was a totally legitimate 'donation' and not breaking any rules.
Only it did break the rules and it's very clear that it did and things are in motion to hold him to account.
To avoid this, he has resigned as an MP, saying this is a protest at his treatment by the 'establisment' (he is a rich fascist grifter, but he likes to cosplay as a Man of the People). This has triggered a by-election, in which he is standing, with the hope that the people of his constituency will either elect him in a resounding win, indicating they don't care that he's corrupt (having not heard everything the investigation is uncovering), or someone from Labour or the Conservatives will win and he can swan off to America, free to grift again because of what the 'establishment' did to him.
Only, all the major political parties have agreed not to stand, stating openly that this is an obvious stunt and they won't legitimise it. So if he doesn't win, he can't say it was because he was too much of a rebel and the Establishment went against him, he'll just be a loser, which doesn't play too well with the right-wingers he wants to grift. And if he does get back in the investigation will go forward without any kind of 'mandate' from his constituency buoying him up.
But. There is another option.
COUNT BINFACE IS RUNNING.
Count Binface is part of the grand British tradition of joke candidates who stand as a protest option. They usually don't get enough votes to get their deposit back (which is supposed to deter unserious people) but they don't care, because DEMOCRACY.
Of course, Count Binface has never won, but it is hilarious to see a completely serious pathetic fascist concede defeat while standing next to a man with a bin on his head to whom they are democratically equal.
But if nobody else is standing. And if enough people in Clacton-on-Sea are finally cheesed off enough with Farage not doing anything for them, there is just a chance that one of the funniest things to ever happen in politics will happen.
Imagine. Imagine for just a moment that the Grotesque Fascist not only loses, but loses to Count Binface.
