Dick getting fired will never be as impactful as him choosing to leave. An emotional incest victim growing up and choosing distance (only after forming a serious romantic relationship) not only makes more sense but is also a more satisfying moment of growth for his character. Dick becoming Nightwing should be a huge moment for him; he’s forming an identity away from Bruce, using inspiration everyone he loves to craft it. Framing that as a moment of teen rebellion and spite is boring.

When it comes to his relationship with Bruce specifically, Bruce pushing the people he loves away is pretty standard and would be resolved quickly, but Dick being the one to leave would wound Bruce way more and cause a bigger drift in their relationship. This would allow time for Dick to grow as a character with the titans and for jason to become Robin without Dick’s looming presence.

I think that would be so impactful, it could haunt the rest of their relationship. Since the 80s, contrary to the first half of their existence, there’s often a cold distance between them with many awkward or outright aggressive interactions. This is usually from Bruce’s end who is obviously know for being quiet and brooding (like a pouting, punitive kid). I like the idea that this underlying angst is traced back to Dick “abandoning” him. He’ll never fully make up for that and he doesn’t want to so their relationship will never be as it was

a talking point i often see when defending the consumption of dark content is that it’s a coping mechanism for those with trauma which is very valid and true but i also want to make this abundantly clear: you can like dark content for no reason. you can enjoy fucked up shit in fiction because it’s enjoyable and entertaining. trauma is not required as a ticket for entry. enjoy your dark content bc it’s fun and sexy and don’t let anyone take that away from you
