I despise when Caitlyn fans hide behind the “she’s a canonically POC character, you can’t call her oppressive! That’d be racist!” despite the fact that her ethnicity or race doesn’t really mean much when Piltover’s oppression of Zaun isn’t on the basis of race.

It’s about class, imperialism, authoritarianism and, obviously, capitalist oppression.

Caitlyn isn’t positioned as someone who’s marginalized due to her ethnic background, quite the opposite, she’s born into a system that actively benefits her. Her family literally has a seat at the council! You know, the same council that enacts police brutality and a type of apartheid against zaunits?

She literally has generational wealth, institutional backing, political protection, a title that lets her move through Zaun with armed authority, and later on has the full power to enact martial law on a place that could perfectly be its own nation and utilize chemical warfare against a population that is already living in horrible conditions. Saying thay she ‘just gassed the Barons’ makes NO SENSE. The grey is GAS, she can’t control how it moves or where it goes, EPSECIALLY since she uses the ducts that allow Zaun to even have a breathable air.

Calling Caitlyn “oppressive” isn’t saying she is an evil villain. It’s recognizing that she functions as an agent of an imperial core state. She’s literally the human embodiment of Piltover. Structural oppression isn’t meant to look cartoonishly evil, she isn’t supposed to be sitting on a throne made out of zaunite bones.

And pretending that being part-Asian magically removes her from that role is just a way to dodge uncomfortable conversations about how power actually works in Arcane. Identity doesn’t cancel out structural position. Caitlyn is not oppressed in the context that matters here. Zaun is.

Mind you, I’m a sociology and political science major, this type of analysis is directly made based on what I’ve studied and researched. Two things can be true at once— it can be both martial law and apartheid.

Let’s look at the definition of apartheid, shall we? “a system of keeping groups of people separate and treating them differently, especially when this results in disadvantage for one group” (source: the Cambridge dictionary).

Were Zaun and Piltover kept separate from each other? Yes. Did said separation worsen under Cait’s command? Also yes. We have an entire scene showcasing Piltover official closing off the ‘border’ between both. Are Zaunites subsequently harmed or at a disadvantage due to said separation? Yes. Are they still subjugated by Piltover? Also yes.

How would you describe this if not as apartheid? I think what you lack is the nuance to understand that what Cait enacted can be both martial law AND apartheid at the same time, because they can easily overlap.

And I find it funny when people like you use the ‘you kids’. What are you doing, implying that younger people lack any kind of sense? Or basic intelligence? You didn’t even provide anything to counter argument that statement lmao

cannot emphasize enough how horrifying this awakening was and seeing people react to it as 'touya was good enough all along if endeavor just gave him a chance' makes me want to put my head through a wall.

touya was not good enough. flat out. touya's quirk had next to no hero potential. as far as we can tell from canon, there was no work-around. (if support gear existed that could've allowed him to use his quirk to its full potential, endeavor wouldn't have had kids. the weakness endeavor wanted to overcome was the same thing touya was experiencing, overheating, but on a considerably smaller scale).

and the fact that touya wasn't enough should've never mattered to endeavor. he should've been able to care about his son, even if he couldn't be a hero or didn't want to be.

to me, this scene showed how far touya pushed his body out of desperation to be enough for his father. this was what he had to go through to be perfect for him. its a horrifying visualization of a decade worth of abuse and the festering resentment that came from it.

he was willing to hurt and mutilate himself so severely and for so long to reach this point, i just can't try to spin it as a good moment.

Like, I understand people are just having their ‘oh, he was the one from the beginning!!’ angsty moment, but why does his value as a human being have to be tied to his physical ability to perform?? That’s like the most ableist talking point I’ve ever read, it literally comes across as this:

“Your worth as a human will be tied entirely to how good your body can perform!! Oh, wait, you have some type of incapacity that makes your body weak to the flames? Ugh, you’re useless now!! Oh, but wait, now that your quirk has awakened and you do have ice, we can finally realize that you were good enough since the beginning and shouldn’t have been treated in such inhumane way!” Like…

Enji was literally treating his children as assets, but we’d rather focus on Touya being ‘enough’ from the beginning? No child should have to be ‘enough’ for their parent to actually do their roles as a caregiver.

Never mind what OP said about there being no way around Touya’s body not handling his quirk. This quirk awakening isn’t supposed to be a ‘Touya was enough from the beginning!’, it’s supposed to showcase how desperate he is to prove his worth as a human to someone who saw him as a tool. It’s disgusting and I hate it and I despise Enji.

I’ve been meaning to write an essay analyzing how disability is seen since MHA (how the narrative treats it, how the audience perceive it, the ableist undertones in some characters, how the definition of disability can be applied in-universe, etc), and so far I have this type of schematic analysis of what characters are presented as disabled and how the narrative perceives their disability, but I’d like to hear some feedback before going further into writing, just in case any of my points don’t make sense or should be reframed! (Please, keep in mind that I am NOT disabled, so if there’s any type of incongruity or misinformation, please let me know so that I can correct it!!)

Izuku: does being quirkless equate to being disabled? He can still live a normal life despite his status as quirkless, therefore doesn't face any type of impediment to carry out normal activities, socially marginalized by a quirk centric society, but doesn't need accommodations to live fully - baseline, no.

Hawks: difference between amputation and disability, primary - professional/occupational disability (is it a real word??) vs. socially/medically disabled, doesn’t need any accommodations to live fully, still, loses an adjacent part of himself, ableist undertones still present in how the narrative handles and frames him losing his wings - baseline, complicated (conditionally disabled)

Touya: directly damages his own body (injury inevitable, built into his biology), loss of safe function (never really safe due to emotional/mental link, he can’t regulate his quirk through discipline alone), hero society fails to accommodate him (which is a necessity that he 100% needs to live normally, society insists on a standard his body can’t meet safely), chronic condition that can result to other types of impairments (like chronic pain and others), Enji and social neglect of his physical needs (could be tied with productivity based worth ableism, somehow) - baseline, yes (?)

Mirko: Most clear disabled character representation, loss of lower limb = incapability to perform every day tasks as easily as others, despite her prevail as a hero and in the ranking. Saw this post and I kinda agree.

I’ve been seeing more and more posts about people calling Izuku disabled in my tumblr feed lately. And I mean, I’d get it if we were talking about his chronic pain (which I think he canonically has, though I might be wrong, so take that claim with a grain of salt, please), but majority of it are people equating quirklessness (?) with being disabled, which I’m not quite sure how that correlation works?

If anyone who genuinely thinks they are equivalent could please explain to me their reasoning, it’s just something that I never really understood or saw the logic behind.

Because it is agreed (I believe by consensus) that the definition of disability is: “an impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities” (source: ‘ACAS’ Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.)

Which, yes, Izuku did face a type of discrimination due to being quirkless, but him not having quirk didn’t stop him from carrying on living normally and fully, right? Sure, he couldn’t become a hero, but within the parameters of what disability is defined as, Izuku could still live a normal life.

Anyway, if anyone could explain their reasoning behind why quirkless = disabled :))

On Writing A Compelling Character Redemption Arc (Best Tips)

1. Establish a Strong Starting Point and Motivation

Redemption arcs are not exclusively for villains; they can also apply to fallen heroes or characters in a state of failure caused by arrogance, selfishness, or laziness.

• Acknowledge the Wrongdoing: The character might start by feeling no remorse, having a partial understanding of their wrongs, or acknowledging their problems but struggling to overcome them. The latter often makes a character more relatable to the audience.

• Establish Unhappiness: A character should be unhappy with their current life or the world, providing a foundation for why they might eventually seek a different path.

2. Utilize the "Trifecta" of Change

A compelling arc involves shifting three core perceptions: what the stakes are for the character, how they view themselves, and how they view the world. For a redemption to feel earned, the character's old way of acting must become incompatible with their evolving views. For example, a character who begins to view kindness as honorable can no longer justify acts of cruelty.

3. Introduce Agents and Threads of Change

Characters rarely change in a vacuum; they need catalysts to shift their perspective:

• Facing the Dream: Sometimes a character needs to achieve what they originally wanted (such as power or approval) only to realize it is not what they actually need or want anymore.

6. Focus on Responsibility and Symmetry

Redemption is about more than just "not being bad" anymore; it requires active amendment.

Unpopular opinion (?): Enji’s atonement is not as well written as majority of the fandom claims

When it comes to the atonement, the anime does a poor job at writing it. He textually talks about atoning at all moments, claiming to not seek any forgiveness, but the narrative contradicts the foundations of what an atonement is and how it looks: “Atonement. noun.: reparation for an offense or injury.”

When we talk about “reparations” we’re talking about making amends.

In other words, make it up to the victims without pushing for reconciliation. And while Enji keeps on talking about not seeking forgiveness, the anime still pushes all characters in the Todofamily into passive roles for the sake of resolution, even Natsuo, the one that cuts him off, ends up harboring respect for him to some extent.

The story doesn’t leave space for any dislike towards him; it pushes you toward either forgiving him, or feeling somewhat sympathetic or neutral. That’s the problem. If this was really an atonement arc, the narrative wouldn’t try so hard to soften him and his behavior. It wouldn’t frame him as a “poor man trying his best.” It would consistently remind you that no matter how much effort he puts in, his actions are unforgivable. It would constantly throw it back into your face, it would remind you that what he’s doing is bar minimum, if not below it. It’d make sure that you know that no character from the Todofamily has any moral obligation to forgive or reconcile. That they have a right to hold a grudge, that he is the one that destroyed them in the first place.

But it does quite the opposite.

The story reframes the resentment the Todofamily feels as something that NEEDS to be corrected, as something that cannot prevail simply because “Enji has already paid enough.”

Also, if he’s meant to be atoning instead of redeemed, why am I expected to like him at all? Why is the story trying so hard to change my feelings/views about him instead of letting his atonement stand on its own and as what it is, a necessary response to irreparable harm caused by himself? Why is his abuse something I’m supposed to move past just because he’s now “trying”? And this isn’t only done by the anime, it’s also done by his fans, which goes to show that, as much as they love to glaze his character arc, they can’t seem to even comprehend the basics of what an atonement means.

Don’t try to redeem a character while hiding behind the mask of an atonement, actions and storytelling will always mean more than the dialogue of a character, especially if they are contradicting.

This is going to be a short and all over the place, but I wanted to tackle an argument that I have been seeing Enji defenders constantly use, and it’s them claiming that ‘Touya burned at thirteen because he refused to stop training, had he listened to Enji and stopped, he would’ve been fine.’

And that’s simply not true nor canon.

Touya didn’t burn alive due to him training, he burned alive because he was having an emotional breakdown. In the anime and the manga, we have a scene of 13 year old Touya gushing over how awesome his quirk was because his fire was changing colors and intensity. Do you know what he says? He textually claims that it’s due to his emotional state, his quirk is tied to his mood.

Now, we all can agree that Touya was clearly a mentally unstable child and was spiraling, he was bound to having a mental breakdown sooner or later. So, even if he had stopped training his quirk, he would’ve still burned alive due to an emotional imbalance. Enji refusing to acknowledge his son’s deteriorating mental state and not giving him any type of therapy or support system to help him regular his emotions better and control his quirk is the ultimate reason as to why Touya burned at 13. Had he been taught how to handle overwhelming emotions and mood changes, Touya would’ve not burned.

(The panels below are straight up from the manga and confirm what I’m saying. His hair automatically combusted when he started to have a mental breakdown, and the fire starting in his tear ducts symbolize how it’s tied and reacting to the emotional distress he’s in.)

There is no bigger cognitive dissonance than when people claim Enji never raped Rei (or at the very least coaxed her), or that Shoto’s birth was consensual.

Their main defense often comes from Enji claiming that ‘Rei wanted more children so that Touya had siblings’, and that ‘Rei chose to marry him’, but they often strip both scenes from the timeline and context completely. So let’s actually see what role it plays on the bigger picture of the events:

1. We have to keep in mind that the Himura clan is canonically incestuous, meaning that Rei’s options were either Enji, the #2 Pro Hero, or her cousin. Anyone else would have chosen Enji, someone who was publicly a Hero, whose job depended on being seen as a “good person.” It wouldn’t be crazy for Rei to assume that Enji would also be a good husband. But if she had truly been given the opportunity to marry whoever she wanted, would Rei have accepted a stranger she only knew through his public persona? No. That alone strips their marriage (and everything that happened within it) of any real consent on Rei’s part. Her supposed “option” and “right to choose” were never real to begin with.

2. The statement that Rei “wanted siblings for Touya” is often treated as if it justifies everything that followed, but canon does not support that interpretation. When Enji recounts this, the flashback is specific: we are only shown Touya, Fuyumi (and maybe even Natsuo, I’m not sure). What I’m 100% is, Shoto was completely absent. That absence matters. If Rei had actually agreeed to continue having children indefinitely until Enji was satisfied, the scene would have reflected that. Instead, it visually caps her wish at two children. Anything beyond that point belongs to Enji, not Rei.

4. That same claim/flashback is preceding chronologically to the panel in this post. A panel where Rei outright states that she does NOT want a fourth child. Yes, her stated reason is concern for Touya, but that detail is beside the point. Consent does NOT require justification. A person does not owe their partner a “good enough” reason to say no. It wouldn’t matter if she said no because she was worried about Touya, or because she felt they already had enough children, or because she didn’t want more pressure, or simply because she didn’t feel like it. The only thing that matters is that Rei verbally said no, and that boundary was ignored by both Enji and his fans.

5. The whole marriage was purely a breeding scheme and eugenics. He chose Rei specifically due to her quirk (biological trait). That’s what eugenics looks like: engineering a specific situation to produce a ‘perfect’ child by selecting partners for their genetics rather than other factors like genuine love or care, turning a marriage into a breeding program. That on itself adds another layer of complexity to the situation and the supposed ‘consent’.

Oh for sure. The 30 innocent people thing is not only unfounded in previous canon, but also outright CONTRADICTED by it*, which tells me Horikoshi literally made it up while he was writing to make Dabi look worse and unsympathetic. Which...worked. Since most people view him as a whiny spoiled brat throwing a temper tantrum :/

*We know Dabi has no prior criminal record before joining the League, although he was most likely doing theft and stuff to survive on the streets he was clearly not doing anything big enough to be noticed by authorities, like murder. If he had actually used his quirk to kill people before he would definitely be known, so it can't be before joining. He kills other criminals while recruiting for the league, but I doubt Dabi considers other criminals to be 'innocent' so it can't be that. He probably killed people in Deika, but I doubt he considers them innocent either. He probably doesn't consider heroes (like Snatch) to be innocent either. So, how on earth did he find the time to kill 30 innocent people exactly?

Quick question, would it be too crazy to call All Might state propaganda? And I’m not referring to Yagi himself, but to the whole ‘Symbol of Peace’ thing. Because the way I see it:

The ‘Symbol of Peace’ is not just a hero imo, he is a narrative device that replaces reform with reassurance. His presence allows hero society to treat stability and safety as something produced by one charismatic person(or people, as in the top 10 heroes) instead of by policy, redistribution, reform, social repair, institutional change, etc. Like, crime doesn’t need to be actually addressed as a social problem when it can be emotionally neutralized by a smiling figure in a cape.

The ‘Symbol of Peace’ image trains the public to feel safe rather than to think critically and dig on why villains are such a major issue. As long as he exists, questioning hero society feels almost immoral, it’s like you’re doubting peace itself, not a terrible system (he’s literally named that lol, which I think could be read as a strategic choice to weaponize the concept of peace in their favor. People will automatically associate peace with All Might, All Might -> good and moral + he’s a hero, therefore = heroes and hero society are morally perfect and questioning them makes YOU wrong). All Might doesn’t just fight crime, he absorbs public doubt, making reform feel unnecessary as long as the symbol stands.

Like, the population is conditioned into believing that the system works fine and it’s the best thing that they could have. They won’t think outside the box because they’ll automatically be singled out and called immoral or villain sympathizers or whatever else.

Also, this worked on the audience too, though I’m not gonna go into detail because that’d be too much right now. Bur basically, All Might and his title of ‘Symbol of Peace’ are literally a shield that protects heroes and society from criticism both in-universe and in real life. Which is also why I think it could be read as state propaganda, though I may be reaching. But anyway, tell me what do y’all think, because this has been on my mind for a while now.

A big denominator of that is the fact that all the superhero media we love —like MHA, Captain America, The Avengers (Marvel in general), etc...— are copaganda. Or more easily known as police propaganda.

It may not seem like that at first glance. But all this media does the same as all the Cop shows —The rookie, Law and Order (tgis one is the most prominent and worst offender), Paw Patrol, NCIS, NAVI, etc—. They are a subtle way that the media has used to change the popular opinion on the police department.

Being very reductive, the police department in the west originated in two ways. Most prominently in Europe and the North of the US (gotten from the english), it was a way to keep the poor in check basically. And in the South of the US they were the ones that kept the enslaved people enslaved after slavery supposedly stopped. To put it simply, black Americans had to have a job or they would be given a fine. Those fines were so big that White people offered Black people jobs to be able to pay it because if they didn't they would be enslaved. But those jobs were basically slavery. This was because of a loophole that still exists in the Constitution that says that slavery is prohibited unless it's in response to criminal activity. That's why there are so many old dumb laws in the US. They were loopholes to keep black people enslaved.

Because of its inherent violence and horrible origins the police was actually really hated by the population. It's seen in the 1900s-10s movies like Charles Chaplin, Looney tunes, etc. But the big copaganda started in the 50s/60s with the series "Cops". After that all this tv shows appeared also.

It's important to note that this shows don't only romanticize the police department, but they also criminalize and treat as inconveniences people's rights of the Constitution —I'm focusing in the US because it's not only where it's more notable but it's also where the world gets most of their entertainment industry's media.—.

Superhero movies/comics aren't any better. They always have the same thing happen. A villain appears. The superheroes defend the city. And the villain gets killed or goes directly to prison. It normalizes the idea that people don't deserve trials and that the problem here is the individual and not the system that led them to that point.

It's well known —from a lot of studies— that more police, worse sentences, etc doesn't rreduce crime. What is known to actually reduce crime is affordable and reliable healthcare (mental and physical), good education, reduction of homelessness and poverty, and a healthy environment.

The thing is that the government doesn't actually care about the good of the public. It cares about profit, money and mostly power. The police and prison system contribute towards that. (This is best explained in the second video I linked)

So in conclusion the public figure of All Might is definitely propaganda in world and out. As the whole world of MHA is for our world (conciously done or not by the author). As there's not only this idea of fighting crime present, but there's also child soldiers who are the main fighters in a war. And that system is not actually adressed in any way. Leaving it in a neutral to good light. Which is actually bamboozling in my opinion.

This doesn't only work to brainwash the population from MHA but also real life people. Because the use of special powers to make us see it as other wordly is a recurrent theme with the superhero genre. It makes us think of it as fantasy and not a reflection of real world problems and propaganda being spread.

But the narrative gave them SUCH a sympathetic framing for reasons even I don't really understand, TOLD us they were doing bad shit rather than bothering to show us At All, and made it so clear they turned into this fucked up little found family of hurting outcasts that NO SHIT I and many others got attatched. They feel human in a way most of the Heroes just... aren't. So of course watching them get thoroughly and brutally destroyed physically and mentally at the end made me and others miserable

The argument that you have to respect the Japanese cultural context behind the work and not criticize the League members getting the endings they did is lowkey the one that drives me the most insane of all. It's like, you know collectivist conservativism is bad and hurts people too, right? A work reflecting the demons plaguing the country that made it doesn't magically make it exempt from criticism or something appallingly dismissive of the pain and marginalization of real people that actually exist when the country in question isn't the United States. A work reflecting a particularly Japanese flavor of conservativism just means politics are a fucking mess in Japan too.

I'm so tired of Spinner being left out and excluded from the League. Put Spinner back in the League please. Make him Himiko's endearingly awkward big brother. Make him Magne's endearingly awkward little brother. Make him worry about Tomura whenever he gets sick and dedicate his time to taking care of him. Let him go to the gym with Jin. Let him argue with Dabi. Let him make video game references. Let him be the only one to understand the gaming references Tomura makes. Let him go skateboarding. Make him stay up late at night playing GTA. Make him a paranormal fanatic, despite him easily getting spooked. Include him in League game night, where he annoys everyone when they play Monopoly because he keeps begging for money just to spend it poorly. Let Jin teach him how to work on cars because Shuuichi's interested in mechanics. Let him playfully call Atsuhiro's magic tricks lame. Let him help Kurogiri wash the dishes after dinner. Make him a hopeless romantic. Make him a source of support for the League. Make the League comfort him whenever he's upset. Make him laugh so hard he cries at a shitty joke Dabi makes. Make him rope Dabi into playing video games with him whenever Tomura's not around even though Dabi sucks at them. Make him want to reconnect with his family, because despite all the shitty things they've said and done to him and them being complicit in the discrimination he faced, he still cares about them and wants them to have a good life. Make him not want to have a birthday party because the greatest gift to him is just being able to hang out with his friends. Make Spinner care so much about his friends. Give the man anxiety. Give the man insecurities. Give the man his friends back.

I love when people include Hawks in the LoV, but why the hell is he, the one that canonically betrayed them and killed one of their own, more acknowledge as somehow part of the LoV than Spinner, a character that has an actual bond with the whole LoV (especially with our main villain, Tomura) and whom has unwavering loyalty to the League and the cause?? The LoV means so much to him, stop erasing him.

While I'm glad he didn't become a drooling fanboy I'm still not convinced Shoto wasn't lowkey coerced into forgiving Endeavor both in-universe and out. It didn't feel like authentic character development, it felt like a quiet derailment, him getting defanged when those fangs weren't even terribly sharp or cruel at all in the first place. The way they're so often joined at the hip in official art and merch despite this being the literal complete opposite of what he wanted depresses me.
