#elle woods would crush light yagami
Well now I'm thinking about Elle Woods (movie version) getting the second Death Note instead of Misa. Ellse would NOT put up with this arrogant brat's bullshit.
The problem of course is that Elle wouldn't kill anybody, which makes it unlikely for the pair to meet since Light would be completely unaware of her. She would probably try to contact L (L/Elle, heh,) but would likely not get through the cop screen (not being taken seriously by high status authority figures until she's proven herself is characteristic to Elle) and if she did, Light would easily find and kill her. Elle would be very capable of hiding her identity, with preparation, but being open and honest with people and giving them the benefit of the doubt until she's proven wrong is characteristic. She'd not be as quick to use a fake name as Naomi unless she was actively expecting trouble from the police. So there's not an easy way to mesh her into L/Light's dynamic like there was with Misa.
Unless. We cut L's character entirely.
Before L took the case, the police had no idea what to do bout the dying criminals, and one group openly voiced the opinion that it didn't matter, the victims were all murderers and suchlike anyway. If he didn't exist, they'd likely keep spinning their wheels for a very long time, probably forming an international unit to investigate but having nothing to work on. Without L's public announcement trick to narrow down Light's location, and with no forward movement in the case, the police would likely not make any statement confirming the rumours of this "Kira" mass murderer. Without his pride or life at risk, Light would likely take much longer to escalate to killing less serious criminals and innocents, having less drive to experiment and no need to kill FBI agents. So he'd probably kill exclusively murderers and rapists and suchlike for a long time.
Enter Elle, a few years out of law school. She's noticed, when researching for a defense case, this weird uptick in prisoner heart attacks. When she brings it up, she gets brushed off my any authorities, who either outright deny that anything's happening or who give her the "we'll look into it" runaround. (The international force trying to get to the root of this is, after all, making no progress; it's best not to have the eyes of the public on them.) Elle has learned a lot about the prison system in her work and about how poorly treated American prisoners are and starts putting together a group of friends, colleagues and interested parties to raise some noise about this.
Then she's attacked. And the man who attacks her has a heart attack and dies before he can hurt her.
And then Rem arrives, with the Death Note.
Armed with information that the cops will never believe (there'd have to be some reason invented for why she doesn't just show Rem to some cop), a notebook whose killing power she'll never use and an invisible, supernatural ally, Elle and her friends are on the hunt for a murderer. They have expert knowledge, social engineering, and truly masterful makeup and costuming skills on their side to hide their identities and look for information, but their target could be absolutely anywhere in the world and if finds out who they are, he will kill them. Can Elle and her friends take on a supernatural mass murderer without compromising on their own principles? He seems pretty clever.
But so is Elle.
i don't know much about Elle but based on this. yea i think she has a good chance of beating him
we can analyze lights fighting power either from an in-universe perspective or a meta-perspective.
from an in-universe perspective. light is strong against 'logical' opponents. people who's behavior and powersets make logical sense (even if very complex logic). he struggles against unpredictable opponents or foes with illogical powers. in fact, the one who had him on the palm of his hand the entire series and eventually kills him (spoiler i guess) is a shinigami. a being with powers that defy the rules of our world.
L was defeated by light because he behaved in a logical even if highly intelligent manner, and never had a magical ability that light didnt have first.
an opponent who does not reveal themselves but also has a shinigami, against a light whose never had to deal with someone on his level? theyll give him a good fight anyway
and when examining from a meta-perspective. it would be thematically appropriate for light to be defeated by someone whose as smart as him but refuses to use the death note. in fact that's basically what happens in cannon.
Another important dynamic to consider:
Elle's victories come after being underestimated by prideful people who look down on her because of her looks, appearance, or mannerisms and habits. An Elle story goes "Elle focuses on something important to her, everyone underestimates her and mocks her because of her whole Valley Girl thing, Elle is hurt by this but works hard and uses her determination, intelligence and her very good social skills to make strong social connections and figure out how to Save The Day.
Light's stories are all about being prideful and self-absorbed, underestimating people and having to scramble to save himself. He then back-rationalises this as His Genius Plan All Along when it clearly wasn't. Every single slipup that Light makes in the whole story, every single thing that puts him in danger, follows the same pattern -- someone challenges him, he gets all upset over it and meets the challenge to prove his superiority, he reveals more information about himself and is briefly upset and humiliated by this until he salvages his ego by telling himself that it was part of his big plan all along to do that or, at the very least, that things are better this way anyway. This is how L narrows his location down to Kanto, this is how his overreaction and unnecessarily elaborate plot to kill Ray Penber practically confirms his identity, this is how he almost loses or how he loses ground a dozen times over and how he's finally defeated by Near.
Elle is incredibly intelligent and naturally socially skilled, and she is used to not being taken seriously because of it. When humiliated, she buckles down and gets to work to rise above it, build community, and do what's right. Elle being challenged is the prelude to her victory.
Light is incredibly intelligent and naturally socially skilled, and he is used to being pampered and respected because of it. When humiliated, he takes the notion that anybody could not recognise his inherent superiority as an injustice, a flaw in the natural order, and throws everything into putting that person in their place with no thought to the idea that he could ever be wrong about something. Light being challenged is the prelude to his defeat. (He also has no respect for anyone but especially lacks respect for women, and Elle is used to not being respected because she's a woman. The idea of being outsmarted by a woman would be ten times more humiliating for him than a man taking the same actions.)
If these two were to meet in the same story, there's one very clear path, thematically consistent with both of their source materials, that that story would take.
Love this
But would Rem die bc there's no way she wouldn't love this human who's doing so much good
Rem would only die if she deliberately acted to extend Elle's life with the Death Note as an act of love. So long as she's not put into a position where she'd forced to kill for Elle, she'd be fine.
