Series: Part 1 of a little damn time
Summary:
Evan has meant a lot of things, mostly negative. It’s been the frustration of an unruly child, the worry over a reckless teenager, the disappointment of a young man who was kicked out of college twice.
Sometimes, Evan has meant something good. By Maddie, Eddie, Christopher—by those three people, Evan has been said like he’s something precious, like he’s worth loving. That has been meaningful, it’s true, but…
But here, at the Fire Academy, he’s not Evan anymore. Not with the three other Evans in his class. Here, his name is Buck, and honestly? He kind of likes it.
Buck’s a little nervous when he brings it up to Eddie. But Eddie’s always made him feel safe, so on one of their calls, he blurts out, “You know how there are three other Evans in my class?”
“Yeah?”
“They’ve started calling me Buck. And it’s like—it’s like Buck can do things, can—help people and put out fires and actually be something. Or—or at least that’s what being Buck means to me. I don’t know.” He shrugs. “It’s stupid.”
“Buck?” Eddie asks. Buck jolts at the use of his new nickname. “It suits you.”
Rating: Teen and Up

Summary: “When did you last eat?”
Buck looks up at him, then away again.
“Buck.”
Buck huffed, “Everytime I try make something, I make something Bobby taught me. And then I–”
“–Can’t eat it because it's something Bobby made you.” Eddie finishes for him. Buck nods. Eddie nods, looking down at the food. He’s already taken bites out of his but Buck hasn't eaten any of his at all. Hasn’t even picked up his fork. “Right.”
or, Buck has been neglecting himself to take care of everyone else and Eddie looks after him.

Written for the final day of @buckweek: free space
short ficlet about all the ways others see you and all the ways you can see yourself, for @buckweek day 7, prompt: what being Buck means to me
-
Reckless.
Athena hadn't liked him at first. But something had changed within the first few months of knowing each other. Buck had changed within those months, certainly. From what he had gathered, so had Athena. And of course both of them had gotten closer to Bobby.
Bobby is within 3 feet of him. His body is at least. It's impossible not to think about it. Buck got a glimpse of Athena's face earlier, dignified and composed even in what must be horrific heartbreak. Even in what must be unbearable grief.
Athena hadn't liked him at first. It feels like lifetimes ago, but Buck can't blame past Athena. He doesn't really like himself either.
Needy.
They had all come to his rescue. He needed them, that day, and they were there. They needed Buck, now, according to Bobby.
Bobby had rescued him too. Had stood beside Hen as she promised him they'd always be there. And Buck had felt so-
Athena had been there, is the point. Had looked him in the eye and told him all that mattered was that he was being Buck. That he didn't give up. Didn't stop.
At the time he barely knew what to do with that assessment. If he'd ever associated being himself with anything, it would probably have been something more along the likes of being too much or being an annoyance others have to deal with or not being loved or wanted. But Athena disputed that without even knowing. Or maybe she did. She was smart like that. And after all, she was Bobby's wife.
Exhausting.
Bobby had once told him- well, it wasn't really Bobby. It was a dead-ghost-dream-Bobby made up by his own brain, so technically it had been him speaking to himself, saying to himself you were Buck. And that's enough? Perhaps his brain filtered that idea through the image of Bobby because it knew Buck would be more likely to believe it that way.
It was one thing to hear from Athena that being Buck meant something at all, let alone that it meant something good. But that it was enough? That he wasn't a set of broken parts that had never worked right? That what he had built himself into, Buck, that it was someone people could love or be proud of?
Born to save someone. Spare parts. Defective. Constant disappointment.
Bobby had loved him. I love you kid. Bobby might have even been proud of him, somewhat. Even though Buck didn't manage to save him. He'd tried all he could. It wasn't enough.
Now, he's sitting at a kitchen table that was never quiet before, reality feeling unreal around him. Now, he's sitting in a cramped confession booth, crying as he asks his dad for a sign. Now, he's standing with his team after the call, success leaving that quiet feeling of satisfaction behind that always settles him. His team, because that's what they still are.
He'd asked Bobby for a sign. He knows what to do now. Even without the ghost of a dead Bobby telling him, the words reverberate in his head.
It's not a costume, it's who you are. I'm sure whoever you saved is just glad you were being Buck. You will still be Buck, and we will all love you.
If that's what being Buck means, he's gonna try everything he can to make sure he lives up to the name. Don't give up. Don't stop.
@buckweek Prompt - Free/what being Buck means to me.
Buck banks on 'being Buck' to win over Bobby when it comes to getting a new puppy that he'll want to bring to the firehouse.

“Why did you decide that we were going to spend the day at humane societies?” Bobby asks Buck.
After Bobby insisted that he could help him with not feeling so lonely buy helping him shop for something that would liven up his new house, Buck decided the answer wasn’t some poster or artwork or new paint … it’s a puppy.
Only Bobby has no idea because Buck didn’t tell him.
“You don’t like visiting puppies on your day off?” Buck teases.
“I thought we were shopping for something to liven your place up.”
“We are,” Buck says, grinning, as they enter the third humane society in LA. He’s determined to find the perfect puppy for him.
Bobby blinks. “When I said liven, I meant artwork or new colors for the walls.”
“Yes, but I’ve been thinking about Blaze for weeks and I’ve always wanted a dog,” Buck states. “I just never stayed in a place where I could have one.”
“Fair, but you do realize that our shifts after conducive to new puppy life.”
Buck smiles as he sees a dalmatian puppy. Cute, and happy to see him, choosing to leave his playmate in the cage to come greet him.
“I was hoping this is where being Buck would help me,” he says before asking if he could see the puppy in the private room to see if he truly would like him.
They’re directed to go into room three, when Bobby asks, “What exactly does that mean?”
“Well, being Buck means different things to different people.”
“Go on.”
“Athena says it’s never giving up on people or goals. Hen says it’s being that playful puppy that entertains everyone and supports everyone, even when it hurts me in the process.”
Like with Eddie’s leaving, but he doesn’t add that bit as the puppy comes into the room and immediately moves to Buck rather than Bobby.
“Let us know of your thoughts when you’re ready,” the worker says.
“Will do,” Buck answers, and they leave.
Then, as he pets the puppy, who’s happy and playful and energetic.
“Maddie says it’s that loveable, try-hard clinger that deserves the world.”
Bobby hums. “Go on.”
“Chim says it’s getting what I want because I’m me and I’m your favorite.”
Buck grins at him. That is exactly why he brought Bobby out with him today, and he can see the dawning look on Bobby’s face.
“I never said you’re my favorite,” Bobby counters. “And if you think being Buck is how you’re going to manage to convince me to let you bring your puppy to work, you’re mistaken.”
He tries to sound stern, but Buck takes the puppy and scoots them closer to Bobby and the puppy, apparently already understanding Buck, licks Bobby’s nose, which causes Bobby to melt.
“That’s cheating – that’s not being Buck, it’s using an adorable puppy to break down my defenses.”
Buck blinks at him, attempting to feign innocence. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, my puppy was simply showing love for my pops.”
Bobby gives him a look. “Now, that’s really cheating.”
“Is it?”
“It absolutely is,” Bobby states, but he’s melting, and Buck knows it.
“Because I think cheating would be pointing out that it’s me and I’m special, just like I was when I asked for your secret ingredient for your chili not long before the lightning strike. And you told me that you’d do anything for me to be happy and you know that a puppy would liven up the house – both of them – and that you’re already getting attached to my new puppy.”
He looks at Bobby, who is desperately trying not to smile and failing.
“Fine, you can keep him, but let’s be clear – I put up a better fight than this.”
Buck laughs and hugs his new dog. “I knew I’d win!”
Bobby grins. “You’re just lucky that you’re Buck.”
“Damn straight.”

They go out shopping for the things Blaze needs – double of some things for the firehouse. And next shift, Buck skips into the firehouse with Blaze, happy and grinning.
“Hey, Cap,” Chim yells the second he spots him. “Buck’s got a surprise for us.”
Bobby appears by the railing of the loft. “I know, I told him that he could bring his new dog to shifts.”
Hen laughs as she appears next to them. “Guess being Buck wins again.”
“Of course it does,” Bobby agrees. “But I put up a good fight, right, Buck?”
“Oh yeah, totally,” Buck offers, but he shakes his head, so everyone knows he really didn’t.
They all burst out laughing at Bobby, but he’s grinning, too.
All that matters for Buck is that being Buck is exactly what he wants to be – now with a new puppy, Blaze – he’s got everything he wants right here.
I'm sure that in a parallel universe there's an Isak and an Even who're lying in the exact same way in the exact same place, only, like the curtains are of a different color or something. So yellow curtains, then?
*So when I'm tweeting with people, I'm just surprised that anybody wants to talk to me, to be honest with you. So I'm still walking on cloud nine while I get to do that stuff with people.*

Summary: “God, I hate this,” Buck said, scribbling out the same line he’d written and scribbled out three times already. “Can’t I just wing it?”
Eddie pressed a kiss into his curls as he passed, sitting down next to him at the table, putting Buck’s coffee in front of him. Buck’s heart still glowed when he kissed him like that, even four years in.
“You can. If you want to,” Eddie said, amused. Like Buck wasn’t going through it just to write a damn speech.
or, a slice of life as Eddie and Buck prepare to get married
