Second Serenade (1984)

In order to prevent myself from playing any more Fields of Mistria before the full release comes out, I have drawn the Hinimato cast as if they were FoM characters.

Originally, I wanted them to be townspeople like I did with Galactiquest, but thinking about it, they work better as Saturday Vendors.

Higgy - Former member of a dance troupe who now does the countryside the honor of selling fashionable clothes. Though he's a little unapproachable, he takes pride in his work and ensures every customer leaves in style.

Nicky - An easy, breezy guy who wanders around picking up things he finds interesting. He doesn't really know what to do with them, so after some urging from friends, he set up a shop. He'd give his items away, but people tell him that his findings are far too rare to be given lightly.

Maxy - A man of action broke resourceful enough to get his armor forging materials straight from the source. Aside from selling armor, he also sells potions he makes on the side. Beware, they're experimental.

Toni - Wasn't confident enough to make full-sized clothes, but found that he has a knack for making cute animal accessories. Please buy from him, he's trying to earn enough money so that his family doesn't have to do dangerous jobs like going into the mines.

Benji and Stanley - Benji loved the markets and dreamed of having his own vending stand. The only problem was, he didn't have anything to sell. That is, until he heard people complaining about not having enough wood for their projects, which is funny because he has bundles of the stuff lying around his property! It may not be the best quality, but his prices can't be beat. Stanley's mostly there for emotional support, but his husband convinced him to sell the grass clippings and clay he has left over from landscaping projects. It makes him feel like a con artist, but if his husband is happy...

Tsuki - Has a lot of connections with access to ingredients that are a little harder than usual to process. She's trying to build up her own cooking skills before she opens a food stand. In the meantime, she's happy to sell what she has to cooks who can actually use it.

Kenji - After a string of stressful careers, he was urged to follow his passion for plants and become a florist. Becoming a travelling florist has its own share of stressors, but it gives him the opportunity to see plants he ordinarily wouldn't.

Mai - Kind of obsessed with success. What's a better marker of success than precious metals and jewels? She doesn't want to be weighed down by things like "armor" or "weapons." All she needs is her trusty pickaxe! And whatever potions concerned friends force her to take.

17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Usually I go from start to finish. Though when it comes to the overarching plot, sometimes I might write a scene (or even a full story!) in advance. That's kind of where I am with the one Hinimato story I'm writing now. Technically, that one would be the end of "Season 2."

20. Describe your perfect writing conditions.

All I need is a focused brain and nothing else that needs to be done.

8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

Whenever favorite dialogue scenes comes up, I think of this exchange between Jun and Aiden:

“I’m sure their dad taught them everything they needed to know. Galhardo’s an okay guy as far as the chief commanders go; I talked to him a couple times back in the day. Really thorough, gave me some good advice.” Jun reminisced. “So I don’t think this is a case of thoughtless nepotism.”  “Oh, so it’s thoughtful nepotism. What a relief.” Aiden wanted to show Jun how ridiculous he just sounded. “Didn’t know you had a favorite overlord.”

I think it's a really good character establishing moment for both of them. Jun knows that the captains' stationing is sketchy, but they're willing to give them a chance knowing that their dad seems like someone who takes his job seriously. But Aiden doesn't know him as personally and doesn't trust the higher ups. I also just think the idea of "thoughtful" nepotism is absurd in a way that's obvious.

24. Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?

I don't think so, actually! I think everything I've ever put online is still available to read. The closest I've come to deleting anything is overwriting a published story with an edited version.

This was the hardest sheet to complete because I was so indecisive about everything 😭 I think Kaneeka came out okay! There is a lot going on with her outfit but she IS doing a lot lmao. I love this obnoxious orange for her outfit and you can pry this color from my cold dead artist hands!! Side note: Kaneeka is one of the most expressive characters in the cast and I really struggled with what faces I finally settled on for a reference sheet. I drew 3 different expression sheets for her which is more work than I've done for any other character so I hope the final result is worth it 😭😭😭
