The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

I've long felt ambivalent about trans girl Shinji Ikari headcanons because of the above. I get it, because child is told to man up and become a weapon and wants to escape that role but is trapped in it by authority figures is self-evidently a transfeminine narrative (David Martinez from Edgerunners is a woman), as is the worst possible fate that can befall our protagonist is becoming just like their father (both Anakin and Luke Skywalker are women), and the way that Shinji rapturously idolizes the women and girls in his life yet feels impassably distant from them can easily be interpreted as dysphoria/gender envy (Denji is a woman). However, Shinji's attitudes towards the women and girls he knows are- as explained by Thariz- just as readily explicable as softboy misogyny on his part that escalates into abuse and attempted femicide once he realizes that playing lost puppy around them won't mold them into idealized caregivers or lovers. I think it was @frostops who pointed out how weird it is that one of the only Deltarune transfem headcanons to gain traction with the fandom at large is Berdly when Berdly is a nerdcore misogynist, and while I don't think tgirl Shinji is an identical situation, or even an incorrect reading, I do have conflicted feelings about it that mirror my outright dislike of transfem readings of Berdly. Honestly, I'm more interested in the transfeminine subtext in how Gendo treats Rei as an object of desire and a utility that he can violently discard at any time, and in how Ritsuko attacks Rei due to her anxiety about her own standing with Gendo.

#really good analysis on both parts#re: transfem shinji‚ i do think it could also be read as an insecure & unrealized shinji trying to cling onto “masculinity”#because he's been told that and had that expectation placed on him his whole life. except he's not accepted by other boys the way he wants#so he takes the other path to “masculinity” that patriarchy encourages: punching down on the women around him#shinji is surrounded by shitty men‚ both the ones he looks up to and the ones he deeply resents‚ and takes cues from them#and all of those cues include misogyny in some form. misogyny is taught & shinji was taking notes during the lesson.#i do love transfem shinji headcanons but she's not even CLOSE to being a self-actualized trans woman in any source material whatsoever.#there's probably something to be said about the idealized image of the pretransfeminized individual as an innocent and vulnerable being#who is incapable of any wrongs‚ and how that deeply harms real-life eggs & transfems who don't fit that idealized mold#because yknow. being an egg is a messy and terrifying time that definitionally has no positive direction to take it in the mind of the egg#so of course eggs will be awful people sometimes. and this often includes exactly the kind of patriarchy-cope misogyny i described above#on a clearer note: i think it's also worth mentioning that gendo is also incredibly misogynistic in his constant pursuit of resurrecting yu#gendo's desire for yui is already presented as selfish; misogyny is only the natural extension of that selfishness.#yui is not a wife to gendo but an object of desire and a crown to be righteously claimed through instrumentality#which again is a refusal to grow and a retreat into a fantasy world where he can treat women as objects. just like with shinji.#(and p.s. this is part of why i hate much of eva's fanservice. it severely undermines any strong messaging on sex & sexualization#when they're showing violations of asuka's body as bad only to follow it up with fifteen shots of her ass.)
