Midnight Supernova -
A canon divergent version of pokemon HG/SS. We follow Lyra as she moves from her home in Unova to Johto, an unexpected friend dragging her on a journey she never could have dreamed of
Thought I'd do one of these for my favorite MS AU ship (they aren't even the main ship but I just love them so fucking much)
〔pre events of the AU〕
A little more info on the two of them;
- they met when they were kids (Archer was 10, Lance was 12)
- they were friends before they started dating (Archer was 17, Lance was 19 - they have less than two years of an age gap since Lance is a late baby and Archer is an early one, more like 14 months)
- Lance was the one who confessed (obviously) and the following conversation was very awkward
- their relationship isn't 'standard' so they keep it a secret. Other people in Team Rocket have their suspicions but no ones been able to prove that they're anything other than colleagues
- their dynamic is a bit confusing to anyone other than them (if by any miracle they find out), since Lance loves Archer, but Archer doesn't reciprocate the feelings. Or at least, he doesn't love Lance in a romantic sense, but he doesn't understand why that would matter
- Lance expresses affection through physical touch, and while Archer isn't opposed to it he almost never initiates (though the few times he does Lance falls in love with him all over again)
- out of the two of them, Archer is the one that cooks. It's not that Lance can't, it's just that Archer doesn't trust him enough to let him within ten feet of the oven
- they are insanely overprotective of each other. They have killed for each other before and they would do it again without hesitation
- Archer gets jealous surprisingly easily (one would think he wouldn't care that much) and with how much time Lance spends with him, he knows exactly what the other man's tells are
- originally Lance is blond and Archer has black hair. Lance doesn't particularly care if his natural hair color is showing through the dye, but Archer takes special care to make sure his doesn't.
- although he cares about the color, Archer hates leaving his hair long. it pisses him off so much that if he can't schedule a hair cut in a reasonable amount of him he will cut it himself (everyone's too scared of him to comment on it)
All characters are aged up - Children are able to officially own Pokemon at the age of sixteen, because if you can drive a giant metal container that has the protentional to kill people, you can take care of a fire breathing dog. This also makes me feel better about writing romance and some of the content in this fic, cause ain't no way I'm writing about some ten year old kids having functional relationships and fighting crime syndicates.
This is based off Heartgold/Soulsilver and later the Sun/Moon + Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon games - The titles for the major installments of the series are plays on the name (Gold Moon + Silver Sun) and I keep elements of all the games. I change a few such as layouts of the towns (one example is Violet City, where Sprout Tower is on the opposite side of the city instead of in between the Gym and Pokemon Center) but I try to keep them recognizable.
Modernization - In this AU the Pokemon universe has finally implemented the technology of cars (hoorah) and all major cities are connected by highways and roads. Still a lot of the population that doesn't live in towns or further away from the city use the subway to get around, and high speed trains exist to help people get to other cities if they don't have a car. Pokedex's also have a few minor changes that will be explained in more detail, but in brief you don't need to catch a Pokemon to register it. The Pokedex takes a scan of the Pokemon and registers it's information, and for Pokemon that people catch it includes more detailed information (sex, age, weight, etc.). And finally cell phones exist, though some people still choose to use Holocasters and Pokétchs (the equivilent of an apple watch)
Timeline - This takes place after the defeat/destruction of a few evil teams (Team Magma+Aqua, Team Rocket - for obvious resaons, Team Plasma, and Team Galactic) but before the resurgence of Team Rocket and Neo Team Plasma. Lysandre labs and Macro Cosmos are under investigation, but still haven't been found out.
Other details - Finally the current world of Pokemon - this includes Galar, but not the new Scarlet+Violet games - are part of one mega continent known as Equinox. This functions a bit like the EU where each region has autonomy and a separate government while there's one mega government that can intervene, and in some cases mobilize the international police. Sinnoh, Hoenn and Alola are island regions while the other five are attached. Alola is the southernmost region while Sinnoh is the furthest north, Kanto is in the east and Hoenn is in the west. Basically from Kanto to Hoenn it's about a 10 hour difference.
This AU is a rewrite of the 'Midnight Galaxies' AU (never completed, so I feel kind of bad just scrapping it and starting again) that I was writing. Looking back on it I needed the experience but I just kind feel out of love with how it was written and where it was going so I decided to go back and start again, hopefully to make it better :)
So welcome to the insanity my good folks, because this is going to be something.
Basic plot
- follows Lyra Hughes (the protag of HGSS)
- she moves from Unova to Johto for her parents job
- she's never had a Pokemon before bc her family are heavily against it (it has something to do with the late team plasma...)
- she meets Ethan and they decide to travel together
- loosely follows the plot of Pokemon HG/SS with more changes as the series goes on
characters who view themselves as tools/weapons first and people second... characters who martyr themselves for a cause because they think that's the only way they can be worth something... characters who push themselves past their breaking point again and again and again... characters for whom devotion and masochism are inseparable... characters whose self-sacrifice becomes self-annihilation...... what was my point again? i had a point. anyway.
Summary - Immortality is bestowed upon the ambitious
Word count - ~1k
Some short backstory/history that I want to include in the rewrite of my AU
Cw : brief mentions of blood, body horror (in all honesty I don't know what to call it but it's weird)
It was the end of the world.
Dorotheos stands between the piles of smoldering ashes that were once his home, head tipped up to the sky.
A beast - no, a God - floats in front of the moon, watching the destruction it has caused with simple, detached sentiment.
This is what he’s been searching for. The picture of immortality and endless power. The creator of the universe.
Arceus.
The God descends to the world it has ruined and the air ripples with barely restrained strength.
He should kneel. He wants to kneel. He decides that he will face the Creator’s wrath without succumbing to it.
‘You are the one that has been seeking me out’
The voice makes him tremble, and he now wishes - somewhere far in his mind - to kneel.
It was not a question, but he feels the need to answer.
“Yes,”
‘You desire immortality. You desire power. And in those desires you no longer care for lives other than your own.’
The God hovers just off the ground in front of him, its head tilted down to fix him with eyes that have seen things he can only dream.
‘In punishment, I will make you live until you learn to respect what is given to you.’
The Creator’s stomach begins to glow, eighteen plates appearing from within its skin to form a twisting circle in the air.
‘These plates are pieces of my being. I give them to you so that you may learn the worth of a mortal life.’
A plate floats forward, and as if by instinct he reaches out to touch it.
At first he feels nothing, but a moment later the plate begins to glow.
He was burning at the spire, his veins have turned to flame. He doubles over and screams, the edges of his vision tinted red. His hands are glowing, as if he had been set on fire starting from the inside.
Another plate floats in front of him and in a desperate attempt to get the sensations to stop he lunges forward to touch it.
A sudden steadying calm washes over him, the previous heat dissipating in favor of a gentle pulse.
It would have been pleasant, had he not begun to choke. Fisting a hand in the fabric of his tunic he coughs, spitting water out onto the ground in front of his feet. Through freely flowing tears he looks up at the third plate. Were his life not spilling between his fingers he wouldn’t dare to touch it.
Nothing happens immediately this time, but he still braces himself as the fourth plate approaches. As he reaches out to touch it he notices his hands, the skin having split to reveal slowly blooming flower buds between his coiling tendons. Blood drips out from within the closed petals, but he’s unsure whether it's his own.
He quickly reaches for the plate and his body seizes as his fingers brush the cool surface.
Small shocks coarse through his body, steadily growing stronger until he can’t stop the painful twitching of his body.
The fifth plate cools his body to the point of being painful, his fingers turning a sickly shade of blue as he shakes.
The next three plates don’t have any remarkable side effects - in comparison with the first five - and he revels in the short reprieve.
The ninth plate that approaches him has a purple sheen to it, and he promptly falls to his knees when he touches it.
This plate rivals the pain of the first intertwined with the horrors of the others. His fingers have become blanketed as if dying, but he barely notices anything outside of the twisting of his stomach. He feels the need to vomit, but his body won’t allow it. Instead he is forced to live with whatever is making him sick.
After that the tenth plate seems like a blessing, simply robbing him of the air from his lungs.
The eleventh plate makes his head throb, whispered voices flickering in his mind too quick for him to understand. Just as it’s beginning to drive him mad the twelfth plate floats down to him.
This one is much like the third, nothing remarkable until he begins to feel something beneath his skin. Something appears to be pulsing, pulling his skin taught over wriggling lumps that had not been there before.
In a panic he reaches for the thirteen plate.
He blinks his eyes open to stare at his own body.
His eyes are glassy, faded from their normal light blue to a soulless black. His mouth is open in silent scream and his body hangs limps.
Though his physical body is in pain, his spectral form feels none of it. It’s rather peaceful, he’d be satisfied to simply remain like this.
It seems that the God doesn’t agree with him and his spectral form has to watch as the fourteenth plate floats close enough to his body that he somehow manages to touch it.
He gets shot back into his body, falling backwards.
Propping himself up on his elbows, his breathing starts to speed up.
He’s shrouded in complete darkness, a suffocating blanket that has his chest tightening painfully.
When a faint light appears he desperately reaches for it.
Again this plate is not painful, but he stares in disbelief at the scales beginning to appear on the underside of his arms and - after a quick brush of his fingers - on his face and neck.
The sixteenth plate changes the scales to solid sheets of metal that meld seamlessly into his skin.
The seventeenth plate makes him cough out absurd amounts of a sparkling dust that sticks to every surface it comes into contact with. It scratches his throat until he begins spitting blood, gasping for air as his fingers brush the final plate.
‘It is complete. You no longer need any form of substance to live, be it nutrients, water or air. But in return, every century that you are alive, this process will repeat itself. The effects will get worse, but you won’t be able to die.’
The plates return to their master in a flash of light, and it watches his with green eyes bordered by crimson
‘You can wish on every star in the known world, you can pray until your knees bleed and your voice is but a whisper, you can hope until all you feel is hopelessness, but you will never die.’
