Defamation is a sueable offence in many jurisdictions around the world.

If someone has not been CONVICTED of rape, then you cannot call them a rapist because that's how you get sued for defamation.

You do not want to live in a world where the media can say you committed a crime without you having been proven guilty.

No, this is not about defending the Tate brothers. This is about understanding why the law is the way that it is and that media organisations must act within the law.

Could you call them alleged rapists? Maybe, but that may change depending upon where in the world you are and the willingness of any one organisation to test the limits. And if you imply that they're guilty, in some places that's enough to get sued.

Which is why criticising the AP for this is especially ridiculous. They're a wire service. They funnel information to publications worldwide that can't be everywhere all the time. Their style is very deliberately pulled back and bare boned. It's not their role to make commentary like that.
