Today we remember 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗞𝗢, who died on this day in 1970. Rothko's work has left an indelible impression on millions of people. It is work that draws us every day into museums and makes us travel great distances for the sole purpose of communion with it.
The fact that art exists at all is a steady miracle. It lives embattled, censored and manipulated, and still has managed to survive since people first identified the nature of their consciousness. It is the sincerity of art, rather than its fashion, that keeps it hanging on. In our world, it is only natural for honesty to be immutably compelling.
Many viewers have had transformative emotional experiences interacting with Mark Rothko paintings, the same kinds of experiences Rothko claimed to have painting them.
In his 1958 lecture at Pratt, Rothko's last public statement, he said,"Many of those who are driven to this life are desperately searching for those pockets of silence where we can root and grow. We must all hope we find them."

The fact that Blackthorne turned out to be a total red herring may be my favorite way that Shōgun subverted expectations.
Because the show followed his journey, we assumed he would have some greater importance as part of Toranaga's eventual victory. Maybe he would have come to the rescue, heroically using his ship and the guns to attack Osaka castle, giving him prime of place as an ally and as a vital part of Toranaga's plan.
In the end, though, Toranaga had Blackthorne's ship destroyed — and was prepared to destroy any others he might build. Blackthorne himself turned out to be a funny foreign distraction, unimportant to the cause beyond just making headaches for Toranaga's enemies, kept around simply because he made Toranaga laugh.

Joe can be as sad as he wants (I have big brown eyes myself, they don't work on me), but the events of TOG2 prove that the exile was the right thing to do.
Regardless of how anyone felt about him personally, they were not safe around him. The moment he had an opportunity to get what he wanted, he abandoned a mission in which ten million lives were at stake and left the team vulnerable to capture (again). His death scene was filmed as though it had weight, but it accomplished nothing and had zero strategic value. He just bailed.
They were right not to trust him. They were right not to keep him around. He was dangerous to them, he was a liability. True, they could have stayed in touch with him while still keeping him off the team, and that's basically what Joe did (making no difference whatsoever), but it's also fair and reasonable to want to take more than six months away from someone who has hurt and betrayed you. "How can we trust you not to sell us out again?" You can't. He did.
Okay, I get being mad at Booker and all, but lets not forget the deep depression he has been in, okay??? And that exile played only harder on it, you have no doubt.
Booker wanted a way out and explicitly said that, he wasn't hiding his pain or anything anymore, so the team definitely knows (or at least Andy does) and what do they do? Ignore it, like nothing happened. 100 years of exile and blablabla.
I'm not saying it wasn't a deserved punishment, but solitude is the worst thing that can happen to a person who's own head is their worst enemy. We've all seen how Booker was when Quynh found him, didn't we? The team should have considered everything before making Booker stay one on one with his own head and grief and pain and guilt.
And also there's regret in him almost immediately after giving up his immortality, because he does want more time with his family and Andy too (these two are more than friends don't talk to me) and he knows that his death will make her suffer, but he wants out in his own terms and so he goes.
I don't agree with creative decision to kill Booker, but it does make sense for him after all he's been through.
The best detail in The Old Guard is that every single time one of them "dies" briefly, they all wait with their breath held to find out if that person is going to wake back up. They're constantly worried that the last time they woke up will be the last time they ever wake back up, the last time their friends wake back up. Choosing to add that, with such clear intention by the actors and the director, not only increases the stakes, because you know it might happen just like they know, but also gives the story such an emotional punch. Its not guaranteed, life is not guaranteed even to the immortal ones. Every breath is precious even when they've been infinite.

I never thought about it this way but YES! I used to read about historic figures things like "She was always writing letters to her best friend and she never married. Clearly she was a lesbian," and it always made me sad because I was always writing letters to MY best friends and never married, but I'm just aroace and really love friendship. Couldn't some of those historic singletons have been like me? But if I mentioned the possibility, usually another queer person would snap at me about how they deserved to find representation where they could. I get that, but if it a historic person's sexuality is completely unknown, can't we share the imagined representation between us? We can both claim Schrödinger's sexuality for that dead person.
