The First Draft?

Your characters are wearing those ping pong balls for the motion capture. They came in wearing work shirts and pajama bottoms. Or overdressed. Someone thought the swan dress would be neat to wear today.

The green screen is empty because we haven’t set up the filming schedule yet. Current settings have been a garage, someone’s backyard, and a coffee shop.

We’re working on our passports to New Zealand/China/Turkey/etc for the background.

The characters have different takes on their lines/actions/the plot. Each one of them has a different Method to get into the scene.

The writer has gone on strike to convince the guild to run this version of the story. The writer and the guild are also the same person, which makes for some very odd conversations.

Someone switched playlists for That Scene!! (You know the one.)

It’s chaos! And that’s exactly the right place to be. There’s no point being hard on ourselves when we see this mess, because we are going To Do Something with that chaos.

People who are not writing our fic are perplexed that we willingly walk into this mess that is the First Draft. However, every day we show up for writing, that is Progress. Let’s be proud of that.

Kings and queens and heroes looked up at them. So did travelers coming home, and little children who sneaked out of bed. In this darkness it didn’t matter who they were, or where they stood. Only that they were human.

Think of that tonight, when you close your window. You are not alone. You share this night sky with centuries of dreamers and stargazers, and people who longed for quiet. Are you anxious? The Hittites were too: they called it pittuliyaš. Does your heart ache? The Greeks felt it too: they called it akhos. Those who look up to the stars for comfort are a family, and you belong to them.
