The reason most indie novels are written like the author is terrified of doing something wrong is because the overwhelming majority of indie novelists get their start by networking in the violent panopticon of the social media indie publishing community, which favours the people who are able to win at the social policing game. The authors really are all terrified of doing something wrong.
The text of the story might be two guys opening a coffee shop together, but the subtext is look me, I'm so cute and nice, you can't possibly think I'm harassing people 24/7 on Bluesky. Please don't find an excuse to ostracize me, look at how harmless I am.
