That this German film is shot in one take is indeed a remarkable achievement but thankfully, given the standard of filmmaking here, this is far more than a one trick show. The film starts off in a somewhat romantic and humourous fashion as we follow a Spanish blow in to the city (the ‘Victoria’ of the title) over the course of a late night and early morning with four Berlin guys, strangers. Things eventually take a turn for the worse and a tense thriller plays out.

Schipper’s single take rarely distracts and lends a suitable intimacy and immediacy to the story, and although there are later moments that stretch our sense of reality the film is well worth a look. The cast are wonderful and I especially loved the performance of Frederick Lau as Sonne.
