AU where Cas fesses up to Dean in season fifteen about his deal with the Empty - maybe after they reconcile, but before all the wounds have healed over completely, so they're still sore and tender around each other. And he tells Dean, because he's afraid, and because Dean begs him No more secrets -

And of course Dean asks about the conditions of the deal afterward, so Cas has to tell him. I have to be truly happy. Then the Empty will take me. I knew I would have a good amount of time before it would come collect, because I rarely feel moments of true happiness.

And Dean asks what the hell constitutes a moment of "true happiness", because that seems pretty fucking vague, okay! And Cas explains that there are things unsaid between them that he wants badly to express. He explains that expressing them would make him very happy.

"You're, uh. I don't think that counts as a secret," Dean says. "If we're both talking about the same thing."

"So you know, then?" Cas asks. "You know what I have to say?"

Dean rubs a hand awkwardly over the back of his neck. "...Cas."

"No, you're right. Better not to tell me," Cas decides. "I can't say it, and neither can you. It's too risky."

So for the next torturous while, both Dean and Cas are hyper-aware of the fact that Cas is in love with him, that it's mutual, and that neither of them can acknowledge it in the slightest or Cas will die. Cue the both of them riding the razor's edge between flirting and not flirting, both of them so so so careful not to step a toe out of line even though they desperately want to. Orpheus and Lot's wife both trying hopelessly not to look over their shoulder.

i know we all have a favorite cas season or fave castiel era but there’ll truly never be anything as special as the first season you watched live and got to see our beloved friend cas do and say new things in your living room every week!! like i look at any shot of him from the first season i watched as it aired and instead of being filled with the usual amount of unending love it’s a very special very fond oh. there’s my dear old friend cas from that very special moment in time :’) i loved getting to see him every week i miss that.

the worst landing, most painful Jokes in spn are the moments where dean genuinely didn’t realize something he said was nerdy or gay or ~weird/outside the box of safe things he’s constructed his facade of a personality around, until sam gives him a Look mixed with confusion and (sometimes purposeful sometimes accidental) judgement. It’ll toe the line between gentle ribbing or dissonance that dean did something outside sam’s idea of him, and unfiltered uncalled for judgement. It’s usually the smallest moments that dean allows himself to have, cause everyone’s a little weird sometimes so silly puns are something he lets himself have. BUT he still he almost always reacts with a little actual shame so it’s the little moments like that, which build up over the years, that makes it so much harder for dean to be authentic especially even testing the waters. he doesn’t know very many people who get to be around him for very long that didn’t know him before he was already in his 30s. It’s no WONDER he makes Cas watch goofy movies and dress up as cowboys with him :( and earnest castiel always humors him like i would too :/

i bet dean, known buffy watcher, saw spike and buffy literally tear down a house with their violent wall-ramming passion the first time they had sex and in the back of his mind always sort of fantasized about that kind of intense chemistry with someone but wrote it off as completely unobtainable and then. well what i’m saying is the first time cas slammed him bodily into a wall and got in his face. i bet that fantasy became a lot more plausible in dean’s mind

au where when metatron and cas are trying to get the heart of a nephilim that waitress doesn't exist so they have to do some complicated time travel spell to summon one so cas goes to dean for help with the ''trials'' earlier bc they need something from the bunker idk it doesn't matter my point is they summon jack- and they don't know about the whole antichrist situation just that he's a nephilim- so metatron and cas are in full unsub mode but dean is like "how about ❤ we say 'no'❤ to murdering children❤" and it turns into a whole Thing where now ontop of the demon trials and shit they're also trying to hide jack from cas and metatron and poor jack is having the most confusing time of his life but he's from like season 15 so he's not gonna look a gift horse of dean being nice to him in the mouth ya know. also sam, kevin, crowley AND metatron all become fully convinced dean and cas are jack's biological parents

dean ALSO thinks jack is his and cas' biological child but he's like *vivid flashbacks of years of homophobic jokes* *vivid flashback of burying his other half-human kid after she was shot in the chest* *realizing how whacky sam's mental state is right now* *kill bill sirens* "don't be RIDICULOUS sammy, I mean, me and cas? come on. that doesn't sound believable at all. I'm DEFINITELY out of his league" *sarcastic smile before he turns back to making a smiley face with eggs and bacon and drawing a heart with ketchup for jack's breakfast*

after thoroughly googling 'two of my dad's switched personalities???' and 'angelic time travel spell' and coming up with no help for his confusion, jack's like 'well, sam's usually the more rational dad! I'll get him alone and ask for help' but then sam is like, feverish and has glowing arms and bleeding from his mouth while muttering nonsense in latin and jack's just like 'what the fuck'

like. he tells sam that he doesn't believe in him, tells bobby that he's not his father. he's hitting on what hurts most on purpose, and for cas it's acknowledging this thing between them out in the open in a really vicious way. like. someone has buried a sword in his back and he pulls it through and slices cas open with it, too. they've had this really intense relationship and cas has literally and figuratively started falling for dean and they keep dancing around it and talking past each other and fundamentally i think they're both okay with that, for now. it's the apocalypse and if they survive - well, who knows. but for now there's sort of outlined rules of engagement which yeah, do include standing very close and a little staring but certainly does not include explicitly talking about it. and so, the very first time they talk about it explicitly, dean is using it as a weapon to hurt cas. and it works, or it at least pisses him off. because it's not just what he says, it's the calculatedly casual way he says it, he's intentionally cheapening this profound thing. it's the way they've been building to something and they both know it and dean just uses it to try and hurt cas enough to push him away.
