my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade

Any way, things to try and do to make some noise about this.

Call Discord at 888-594-0085. All I had to do was stay on the line and leave a voice mail.

File a support ticket with discord. This will require you to create an account separate from your discord account.

If you have Nitro, CANCEL IT.

File a complaint with the California Privacy Protection Agency. You do not need to live in California to do this. I personally checked off "Right to Opt-out of Sale/Sharing" "Right to Limit the Use of My Sensitive Personal Information" "A business’s collection, use, storing or sharing of my personal information" and "Children's privacy" because like FUCK would they not be getting that in their efforts to protect them. When they asked for evidence of privacy violations, I shared the Discord press release.

It's also worth mentioning that Discord is headquartered in California.

sounds very similar to a radio story i heard in 2014 ago about credit card debt. the debt got sold to a collection company and a couple received a court summons. they knew they had taken on debt, but they were confused about who this new company was and where specifically the number they were supposed to owe came from.

they show up in court and just ask the lawyer for the collection company: can you prove where this number comes from? Do you have a contract showing that you purchased our debt? probably luckily for them, a reporter researching a book on the topic showed up and asked the same questions.

10 minutes later they get in front of the judge and the collection company drops the whole case and theyre free to go. story is below, it has a transcript in the link too

This is a wave of very impressionable people whose favorite "left"-bloggers will criticize the hysteric reaction to genAI as if it's more dangerous than the empowered millionaire+ technocrats pushing it on us. If you talk to them, they all parrot the same line about copyright laws, but go slack-jawed or block if you want to talk about, like, deskilling and information control.

Most of them aren't even actually anti-consumerist, which is the real disappointing part! Amazon outfits and wishlists out the ass...

I got here wanting to do comics and now I am, how the fuck did everyone else get here; why do y'all think character design is important??? It's not in the grand scheme and people refuse to get past character design 101 anyway so why are y'all bothering?? go throw a pot!

Great rhetorical question!! I think that's a function of Tumblr, because previously anywhere else, you just hosted/posted shit you made and people were like "oh neat, let me email you about it and we can have real human conversations sparked by your contribution."

But when microblogging and sharing became a function, well... suddenly you didn't need to have anything to say to be part of the conversation. You can just reblog. Rather than what you added to the world, you could just share (conspicuous consumption) and build a personality around that. Around liking stuff.

Anyway, my main point is that that's why Tumblr is such a haven for fandom, especially for lovers of flat images, animation, characters, storytelling, the intangible but the emotionally-resonant. Infamously, a lot of "Tumblrinas" just don't do much except watch porn and cartoons. It makes sense that we aspire to porn and cartoons. I'd say to ask yourself, what you think they want to express that can't be expressed by throwing a pot?

Add that to drawing being one of the most accessible and space-efficient types of art skills... and one you can do in your bedroom without traveling to a studio or talking to anybody... plus the fact that "craft"-designated arts like pottery and fibers are only just recently not needing a spoonful of sugar to go down, which was largely because they're not as economical for storytelling... plus "art" in the pre-internet consumer sphere usually meaning "for my walls"... and plus our parents telling some of us "oh you draw good anime, I bet we'll see your drawings in a museum someday, because that's where all art goes right"... oh we never had a chance

This is something very important to me. If any of you live in Wisconsin, please contact your representatives and tell them to oppose opening a Sandhill crane hunting season. There will be a senate hearing on the issue on November 19th, and I encourage you to attend if you can.

This post from the International Crane Foundation has a lot of information on why opening a hunting season on cranes would be detrimental, as well as information on how to find and contact your representatives.

The main reason they want to open a hunting season is because of claims of crane-caused damage on crops. There is no evidence that a hunting season will reduce these damages, but there are plenty of ways to deter cranes from crops without killing them.

We are still in a bad place with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Thousands of Sandhill cranes have died this year in the US, with up to 2%-3% of the Eastern population lost.

We've saved Sandhill cranes from the brink of extinction. We don't want to undo that work.

Of course…I had no idea this was even being proposed. I’d love to see the state take real steps to help farmers instead of encouraging needless killing of these cranes, which is ineffective anyway.

The thing that really boils my potatoes about AI in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist.

But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this AI generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the AI Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building.

I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

recently saw a comment section full of people, primarily women, talking about loving living with their best friend and being sad about having to live separately one day. some people talking about missing living with their best friend, some talking about “getting” to live with their best friend “until” they find partners. saw one person mention that moving out to move in with a partner felt like a divorce. it makes me so genuinely sad… all these people recognizing the joy they can find living outside the norm, letting themself live with a friend instead of a romantic partner, but still feeling like they have to live with a spouse eventually. like it’s not even a decision, just an inevitability.

similarly, it makes me sad when someone shares their happiness from living with a friend with others and the biggest response is people insisting/assuming they must have a secret unrecognized romantic connection. just taking over a moment of joy to insist they’re wrong about their own life and feelings; all to reinforce the lifestyle everyone is already expected to conform to eventually…
