Aromantic Nikki Freeman. Walk with me.
something to be said about how when we see Bear and Nikki have sex in Obsession (2026), it's as dispassionate and lifeless as it is. setting aside the obvious consent implications of fucking a wish-hijacked Nikki, you'd think that the wish-hijacked Nikki would be, well "freaky" in bed -- more reactive, more emotive, hungrier for him, more all over him -- but she's literally just laying there, arms literally at her sides. my best reading is that, since her entire existence is now about Bear, it's just about what Bear wants out of sex, and Bear frankly has very little sexual imagination or consideration for Nikki's possible wants as a sexual being (or wants in general, given, well, the premise of the movie). he wants to have sex with Nikki, but doesn't really want to have sex with Nikki, if that makes sense. what he and Nikki are doing sure is definiable as sexual intercourse but that's basically all that can be said about it. in this way, the wish-hijacked Nikki's blandness in bed reminds me of an observed behavior in predator animals, where despite their immense strength and power, they are actually quite loathe to expend a single ounce of their energy reserves more than necessary on prey, resulting in observably "lazy" behavior
Also Obsession is so aromantic??? Love as horror my beloved there's really not enough of it out there
The horror of a friend who clearly has a crush on you...
The idea that romance is automatically good...
Thinking about the little montage we got of them at the beginning of their relationship and how that is as much horror as the rest of the movie in a way
I love Obsession because with the way that you often see dubious consent tropes like love potions, mind control, sex under false pretenses, ect... It is so nice to see a work of fiction actually address these situations as being as traumatic and violating as they would realistically be and intentionally use it as a metaphor for abuse/SA
oh and another thing that devastates me about Obsession is how much nikki is judged and blamed by those around her. sarah and ian repeatedly telling bear that he shouldn’t have to deal with her, that she’s not his responsibility, that they’re worried she’s taking advantage of him. as if they aren’t also her friends, as if they shouldn’t know her well enough to notice something is off. there’s no concern for why nikki is behaving the way she is, there’s just distain towards it. she starts acting out of character and so it must all be intentional. but bear doesn’t get questioned. bear isn’t gossiped about. nikki loses all her agency and autonomy, and all she gets for it is judgment
One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.
the longer I sit with obsession the more empathy I start to feel for entity!nikki. this creature that was created solely to love one person with this all-encompassing intensity that needed to be stronger than anything anyone felt in the entire world. entity!nikki whose entire world was just one single focal point; she'd do anything for bear to love her. she didn't know anything when she came into existence, but she was willing to do anything to get this man to fall for her.
it must have been equally terrifying for her as it was for the real nikki to have someone else fight for control over what she perceived as her body. the scene where she's sobbing in the corner, terrified of her dreams is now more sad than terrifying to me. real nikki, who has just been raped by her once best friend hurting so badly that it seeps into entity!nikki's nightmares. entity!nikki who doesn't understand why the thing she wanted so badly is causing her so much pain. why she can't bring herself to lie in bed next to the man who is the center of her world.
and the worst part is bear doesn't even seem to like her. she's trying so so hard; she made a lovely memorial for his dead cat, she waited for him to come home all day without moving an inch, she made sure to be the most doting girlfriend at the party, and he's not pleased by any of it. he seems disturbed and angry and scared and she has no idea what to do to make it better. to make it worse, he keeps asking her to behave like the original nikki but he was the one who wished for her!! she can't be like nikki because nikki was simply not capable of loving bear even a fraction of how much she does!
she can't seem to reconcile it; he wanted her so badly he conjured her into reality and now he doesn't want her anymore. she doesn't know what to do. she tries everything. she obsesses over him, she threatens to hurt herself, she gets rid of that bitch sarah who keeps distracting him and trying to steal him away, and then dresses in her clothes for good measure and he still doesn't want her.
and then finally in a fit of desperation, she makes the wish and for one beautiful moment its all perfect. he's finally looking at her the way she looks at him. and then he's dead and she's lost everything.
her entire existence, from the moment of her conception to her death was painful, and confusing, and so very sad.
I need to see it again to pinpoint the details but I really like how the opening scene of obsession (2026) is Bear practicing his confession with a diner waitress... like already you have a woman (who is not Nikki) fulfilling the role for her, saying the response she thinks Bear would like to hear, but the moment this woman gives her own opinion, offering genuine advice to Bear (something along the lines of buying Nikki something she likes, like her favorite candy, flowers, etc)... Bear disregards it... but then ends up using Ian's recommendation from this same conversation (calling Nikki "Freaky Nikki")... like god its all already right there
if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made
No because let me get this fucking straight.
She pulls your cat out of the trash and makes it an "altar" - She loves me and I get to fuck her!
She lies about her dad having cancer and makes a crazy scene in a public place - She loves me and I still get to fuck her!
She acts freakishly, scares you and yells at you at 3AM - She still loves me and I still want to fuck her again
She barricades you inside the house, cooks and makes you eat your own dead cat - She still loves me and I might still fuck her
There's clearly something very wrong with the way she's acting, so much so she seems possessed, hurts herself and makes a bloody scene in front of your friends - Yeah maybe she doesn't really love me... but she still lets me fuck her. I can't change it. I just have to fix it without having to kill myself
The real woman you say you "love" literally begs you to kill her to put an end to her psychological trauma, her body not responding to her, and you raping her every chance you get - What's so bad about being with me?? ☹️😠
She kills the one woman who actually kinda liked you for real AND rightfully says it's your fault - Oh my god now I have to fix this 😫😫😫
NOW?!?!!
"is being with me so bad?"
KILL YOURSELF LITERALLY EXPLODE EVERYWHERE HOLY FUCK!!!! FREE HER!!!! GOD!!!
nikki begging bear to kill her and all he does is ask whats so bad about being with him. one of the most nauseating scenes ive ever witnessed
Her saying "I've never been with you Bear" (I might have the exact wording wrong but idgaf) is one of the most haunting lines in recent memory.
The real Nikki has been a captive insider her own body, a fugitive forced to watch something else pretend to be her. The only time she even has a modicum of power is when the entity is asleep, and even then she has no control over her own body.
She is a prisoner insider her own self - not because of her own actions, but because of the lust of someone she considered a friend BUT NEVER a romantic partner.
Nikki truly is one of the most doomed characters of the 21st century. Inde Navarrette and Curry Barker I salute you for the horrifying, devastating character you created.
there’s something so gutwrenching about the fact that the female characters in obsession have real dreams and wishes but never get the chance to see them realized, while both male characters waste their wishes on short-term selfish satisfaction. they were complex, free-spirited young women who just wanted to create art, and they were destroyed by a man determined to confine them to his superficial perception of them. nikki wanted to be a writer, sarah wanted to be a tattoo artist and now neither of them will get to be anything at all
so i just saw obsession
