Imagine Kara waking up to a universe reset and finding the world's perfect, from a certain point of view. Clark and Lois are happily married, on Earth, with two little boys they adore. Alex and Lucy have been married like a full year, family planning and all. She herself wakes up in a big house, that's got photos of kids on the walls, a nursery with stars she recognizes as constellations from her home planet... oh and the realization she has children with Cat Grant (who runs catco still)
So anyone remember the halfway decent 2000 movie The FamilyMan with Nic Cage before “the bees, the beeees!” was a thing? Because if youdo, you’ll know I’m blatantly ripping it off, and if you don’t, well I justtold you, now you do.
Kara is very, very confused. There are kids, kids! And theone in the nursery is throwing a fit and um, where did she come from? Is sheadopted? If not, does she have Kryptonian durability? How careful does Karahave to be to keep from literally breaking this tiny blonde person who’s actinglike her life is somehow more messed up than Kara’s right now?
Okay, okay, there’s, yeah, still Cat’s heartbeat. Yes, sheknows Cat’s heartbeat, known it for years before the reset, what about it? That’sthere and Cat’s in the bathroom and…oh. Shower. Cat’s in the shower. Rao, thatshower is half the size of Kara’s whole apartment. Which isn’t her apartmentanymore, is it? That shower is also her shower now, right? Okay, focus Kara,focus. Shower, frosted door, she can’t see anything, it’s fine.
The first time she calls Cat’s name, Cat doesn’t hear. Orthe second. Or third. Kara’s had a long week, okay? Finally, Cat hears her.
“Either enunciate properly, or get in here, darling, becauseI can’t hear you.”
Darling. An actual darling, not a sarcastic, how dare youcome to work dressed like that, darling. “I, um. The…baby. Is crying.”
“And, the baby. Is crying?”
“So? Go on, Supergirl. If you’re quick about it, you mightcatch me before I get out.”
Rao. This is not how this fantasy ever played out in herhead. “She, um, wants you?”
Door that gets pulled open. Lots of steam and, Cat. Yup, Cat’sdefinitely there. Naked. As one usually is while showering.
“Did she tell you this specifically?”
Kara, well, she can’t look at Cat that way, it wouldn’t beright. So she’s looking anywhere else. “Yes?”
“She’s learned to talk overnight?”
Damn. Does the baby not talk? How old is she? When do babiesactually talk? “No? She’s got that, you cry?” That’s a thing, right? Eliza saidAlex used to cry differently for her and Jeremiah depending on who she wanted. Didn’tshe? Maybe she didn’t here, wherever here is.
“Why is everything out of your mouth a question?”
Kara can hear it. The raised eyebrow voice, the what thehell is wrong with you voice. But it’s laced with affection that’s never beenthere before. “It’s not?”
“Why are you staring at the laundry hamper like you’re goingto set it on fire?”
Kara almost says she’d rather not, but that would be evenweirder, right? And a lie. She’s so busy suppressing a panic attack that shesomehow doesn’t notice Cat’s approach until it’s happened.
“Are you feeling all right?”
Kara doesn’t scream. Really, she doesn’t. It’s just a greatimitation of a scream, and Cat was touching her cheek until Kara not-screamedin her face, and she’s startled enough that she forgets to not-look, and Cat’sin a robe now, but it’s open, and it’s a deep red not dissimilar to Kara’s cape,and that baby is still crying and this is NOT how this fantasy usually goes.
Cat’s surprised. Why wouldn’t she be surprised, Kara justdidn’t-scream in her face. “Sorry, sorry, you just, startled me.”
And Kara’s going to answer, really, she is, she’s going tocome up with a fantastic answer that absolutely doesn’t make this worse. Butthen she notices Cat’s chest. Not that she didn’t notice it before, but now shereally, really notices. Because Cat’s got a tattoo. When did that happen? Cat’sgot a tiny tattoo near her left breast, near her heart. A tattoo of Kryptoniansymbols. A tattoo of Kara’s name, written in Kryptonian.
And then well, well the baby’s crying, and Kara’s crying nowtoo, and Cat’s very confused and worried, but this is fine, it’s fine. This istotally going to be fine.
