the misogynistic response to tabitha's character since day one of this show has always been a thorn in my side because of how deeply i love her. viewers absolutely despise her as a complex female character who happens to also be a mother, but that she isn't just a picture perfect loving mom figure occasionally giving her husband or the leading men props and cooking up meals. tabitha is a driven and curious character who drives the plot forward, who investigates the oddities of the town with the fervor of a mad scientist, she's brave and ventures into places other characters wouldn't touch for fear of death.

her and her husband are basically divorcees stuck living together in this nightmare town with their young children trying to process everything and protect their family. and because tabitha isn't just a perfect, easy female lead (because she is a mother), everyone loves to hate on her. she is shrill, stupid, annoying, a bad mom. they harp on the actress constantly as well who is doing an amazing job, they just hate everything about her. and it's literally always tied to her being a mother. i wonder what the reaction to her would be if she wasn't the mother of the matthews family, if she was just a donna or a kristi who was already in town. audiences literally are incapable of taking her as a serious complex leading woman because she is also a mom. that completely brainwashes these people into thinking everything she does has to adhere perfectly under a list of things "all good moms do and should be" in their heads. a mother character is not brave, curious, and tenacious. they are certainly not leading a horror story where her focus is not constantly on her children, thats obviously absurd. boo, go make dinner and sit inside your haunted house all day. what are you, a complex leading woman? boring!

Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"

And they were like "What?"

And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."

And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"

And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.

And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.

Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.

There’s a phrase that really stuck in my head around this. It was from one of the British divers who enacted the Thai caving rescue, though I couldn’t tell you which one or which interview.

As he described to the interviewer a moment of panic and how he he overcame, the interviewer said, in one of those, summarise-last-answer-given-with-appropriate-levels-of-respect-in-order-to-proceed-to-next-question phrasing’s, “Wow, so you rose to the occasion -“

And the diver said, “No, actually people always get that exactly wrong. In an unexpected and urgent situation you don’t rise to the occasion. You sink to the level of your training.”

"breaking bad" is so phenomenally funny on every level, like the jokes and performances are legit hilarious but also the sheer notion of the polite, locally-beloved manager of the local chicken joint smilingly refilling my drink and then going into his back office to solemnly sit at his little computer and think of new ways to make a local traumatized drug dealer not kill himself because he knows the krabby patty secret meth formula is transcendently funny

I like the contrast of Denji and Reze's pool scene and the beach scene. In the pool, they show intimacy by taking off their clothes together. Meanwhile at the beach, the intimacy comes from Denji putting clothes on a naked Reze, showing compassion to her even after all the destruction and pain she brought him. I think that moved her as much as him sparing her life because it's such a small 'unnecessary' kindness.

It's also proof that Denji isn't just a 'gooner creep' like some of the audience misinterprets him to be. We know he finds her sexy but instead of perving over her naked unconscious form, he put his shirt on her to give her some privacy and safety. He's a considerate guy.

This is why the pool scene is important to the character development and themes btw, despite some dumb people calling it 'gooner bait'. It gets recontextualized in the end to indicate their feelings have deepened beyond physical attraction or surface level... perfection.
