Gansey is actually so cunt if you think about it. His parents are conservative republicans. He’s in a homoerotic situationship with every single one of his friends and some old man from Europe. Died twice. Stole his ex situationship’s girl — ON SAID SITUATIONSHIP’S BIRTHDAY. Always on the phone, always busy and booked. Punched his Latin teacher, threw a Molotov cocktail at a substance party he wasn’t even invited to. Can fly a helicopter, isn’t very good at it. Drives a vintage car even though it’s shit, simply for aesthetics. Wears contacts instead of his nerdy glasses, because he’s vain. Writes in an old leather notebook instead of just using his laptop. Truly believes in magic. His roommate is a ghost. Captain of the rowing team. Everyone at his fancy private school knows his name, everyone thinks he’s cool but also very very weird. The absolute aura on this guy.

i have to say it was really bold and innovative for maggie stiefvater to say. in my YA romance series centered around a dark prophecy of a girl being destined to kill her true love. the girl and her true love will actually end up being in a throuple with another guy who has absolutely fuckall to do with the prophecy. who without warning just sort of showed up when no one asked him to one day. sat in between them. and very seriously said. scoot over. i love yall.

Imho the craziest thing about pynch is that even though we're not shown much of them getting together, every single line is so romantic and impactful that even not much is enough for them to be everything they need to be. Ronan would start wars and burn cities??? The ocean burned??? MAYBE I DREAMT YOU??? Altered my brain chemistry forever.

i think bluesey is so compelling to me because gansey is forced to like blue for her personality. the kiss curse takes away any possibility of physical intimacy, so all of gansey's feelings have to revolve around who blue is as a person. there is still so much yearning there, but it's built first on their relationship, not physical attraction.

so many book romances begin because the characters find each other hot, and personality crushes develop (maybe) later (if we're lucky). bluesey did it the other way around. and that's why i love them so much.

it's also important to note that blue's personality is very much not stereotypically feminine. she is entirely self-sufficient and independent, and it's clear that she is in control of her feelings for gansey; if he were to be manipulative or dismissive toward her, she would simply walk away! she is perfectly okay being on her own, and she's not going to take anything from anyone just because they're pretty! and gansey is still down bad for her.

thank you maggie stiefvater for writing 1. good romance and 2. self-sufficient girls in that romance.

blue sargent having inherited intractable lesbian je nais sais quoi is such a dear concept to me as a girl who also has an extensive network of gay-passing female relatives. i know in my heart blue sargent has had to come out as liking men. blue sargent talks about her boyfriend and people do a double take.... walking out of her painted lady victorian house with her thrifted doc martens and crochet market bag and sashiko jeans looking like the human embodiment of the city of portland and then going to meet her boyfriend Normal Richard? it does not compute. when gansey and blue go places together people assume gansey is her tall man-shaped butch because no other explanation makes sense. the lesbian vibe is so strong it affects the world like a gravity field it actively makes the people around her look gayer by association. if ganseyronanadam go places together people think they're weirdly codependent straight guys. if BLUEganseyronanadam go places together people assume they're a polycule on their way to the farmer's market to sell zines
