We've been talking about increasing Black femicide and misogynoir all year, (and that's just in the US alone. Consider the ongoing genocide in Sudan.) It's sickening, how little value our lives, our feelings, and our safety hold at the intersection of race and gender. How much our pain and humiliation sparks a cruel joy from the world that thinks we should have just shut up. We see it every time, and no one is safe. Not even the most popular lady rap artist in the world, and most certainly not the scores of unseen Black trans women who don't even get put on the lists of stolen souls bc of biased, bigoted reporting.
It would be nice if y'all would actually be kind and do right by the Black women and girls around you 😭 maybe take the time to actually make us feel safe around you, because we can tell when you aren't.

Randomly remembered seeing this random old black and white photo from like the 50s, pretty sure it was from Sweden. A picture from a morgue, of a tall blond man in some kind of an uniform approaching another man standing beside an opened coffin, clutching something to his chest while looking at the approaching man with a look of wary insult on his face. The caption explained that this was an incident of a police officer stopping a man from putting a bottle of beer in his father's coffin (his own father, not the cop's father) because for some reason doing that was against Sweden's burial laws.
I don't remember the details but I recall how the guy had the looks of a rough life written all over him, ragged clothes in contrast to the police officer's pristine uniform - though obscured by motion blur as he was rapidly approaching with hateful intent - and the much finer burial clothes of the deceased. A small, skinny man with black hair, holding onto the bottle that's about to be confiscated like it's something precious to him.
I felt like something wasn't adding up and went to the comments to see if there was additional context that was missing from all this, and there was: The son and the father were Romani, and at least at the time it was still very much a tradition in Swedish Romani culture to bury the dead with little gifts - not necessarily extravagant or expensive, but things that the lost loved one would have liked.
This wasn't about a mourning son being stopped from playfully paying his respects in a way that someone else thought indignified. This was about a man being prohibited from performing his own peoples' funeral rites.
Had to go find the photo, it's indeed Swedish. Taken by Åke Borglund and photo of the year 1958, apparently.

JC and NHS had to run some ancient jiang courtship gauntlet through some earthy tunnels? was it a mountain, was it underground, i don’t know. fighting creepy crawly monsters n shit, looking like that one she-ra scene. i think the gimmick was that the ritual was fake the whole time but the power of dedication was supposed to be seeing them through. i can’t remember if it was explicit or not but i have this feeling it was. something something jin ling. i think. modern literature, genuinely, please don’t have been deleted. they were in a stressful situation, alone together, and i don’t know if this fic or another one had them sleeping in shifts but i feel like it was this one. this fic altered my brain chemistry and made me commit to sangcheng as a ship. yo girl had been dropping her toes in before that, but after? oh Lord, man

started thinking about this recently after my new-to-this-character, surface-level, heuristic stereotyping wore off: canon!zanka definitely ain’t real feminized ‘cause the internet would’ve CRUCIFIED a girl who ran away from her traditional elite nuclear family to join a band of grungy, working class misfits and didn’t become the best to ever do it offscreen in three short ass years. and so would the in-universe society of gachiakuta, which, as we see through stories like Noerde and Amo’s, does retain some real-world issues of sexism.
the lowkey DUMB jokes we already get now would be littered with the B word, the thirsty caricature art would be disgustingly fetishized, and the discussions around janka would look even fucking crazier and more racist than they already do. y’all think they bitch Japanese men unnecessarily? that’s actually true, too. but a Japanese WOMAN can’t even BREATHE around Western audiences before she’s a provocative brat-tamer.
Kyouka skates by because she isn’t actually super counterculture, especially in anime. In the west, her version of the mysterious villain relative archetype is typically given to older female characters, because (occasionally miserable and/or gross, probably ugly) childless (cat) older lady is storytelling shorthand for counterculture meaning evil somehow?, but it’s a familiar one. female Zanka’s birth family would be all SOME people could think about, and not in a “y’all are interesting lemme poke around in your psyche” way. all around sickening work😭🙏🏾
