i wonder how much of her life Scully spent trying to fit herself into roles that felt too small for her. like from what we know of her pre-pilot (smoking cigarettes in secret, rewriting Einstein, choosing FBI academy over a career in medicine, sleeping with older instructors, gaining credentials that most people her age could never dream of etc.) indicates someone who is simultaneously excelling and rebelling, leaping between disciplines and expanding her interests at a rapid pace. she’s clearly worked hard to succeed within extremely competitive and male-dominated institutions but there are already signs than she’s testing the boundaries and isn’t satisfied with simply checking the right boxes to advance her career. ambitious as Scully seems from the outside, her curiosity and her integrity prove much stronger motivators for her than professional acclaim (this gets spelled out pretty definitively by Squeeze).
so i think Scully before the pilot was chronically understimulated and always on the edge of feeling truly trapped or bored. but her tendency to act out is tempered by an equal tendency to fold back inward and assume the role she believes is expected of her — she is Starbuck and she repeatedly assumes that role in many of her endeavors and relationships, treasuring it at first but eventually resenting it as well. so Scully wants more of something but what more is there? what except to keep going along the path she’s fought to make her own? she’s not doing what her father wants or what her teacher wants but she’s still unsatisfied. until she’s standing in a cramped basement arguing with a strange man about aliens and feels like she can breathe freely and think freely for the first time in a long while
That night, Scully lies awake in her motel room with Brady’s words laying heavy on her mind and heart. Her mind keeps circling back to the way Mulder looked at her that night in the warehouse. She vividly remembers desire and reverence in his expression. Then, there was the smell of his sweat, and the way his body felt against hers. She couldn’t get it out of her head - sleeping or awake. Can she really go the rest of her life without feeling his cock inside of her again?
As she restlessly repositions in bed, her ears pick up the tell-tale strains of synthesizer music from Mulder’s room next door. Is that what she thinks it is? Moans and breathy sighs confirm her suspicion. So much for Mulder never watching porn again.
The knowledge of what he is watching, let alone what he might be doing while watching, sends a fresh batch of images through her brain. Her own pornographic highlight reel of moments from their time in the warehouse, coupled with her dreams from the past several months, comes to life behind her eyelids. She squeezes her thighs together to tamp down the surge of desire as her mind continues to turn. She thinks again of Mulder lying next door. Lonely and aroused. What if…
I for one, don’t want to have any regrets, do you?
No, she doesn’t. And in this moment there is only one regret she can ever imagine herself having.
Before she can talk herself out of it, she stands and moves towards the adjoining room door. She raises her hand to knock, pausing to almost think better of it before rapping her knuckles softly against the wood. The porn music quickly stops, and after a moment of shuffling inside, the door creaks open halfway to reveal Mulder from the waist up.
“Everything okay?” he asks, voice a little gruff. He is not wearing a shirt; Scully’s eyes are immediately drawn to his toned chest. “Scully?”
She drags her eyes up to his face. His cheeks are flushed, eyes dark and predatory. Scully’s breath catches in her throat. What is she even doing?
“Yes… I mean… no… ” Her skin feels hot under his eyes, calling to the heat in her. A bolt of bravery hits her, and she pushes the door the rest of the way open to reveal Mulder’s lower half. He’s in the same grey sweatpants they wore the night they watched Candy’s video together, the crotch tented just as impressively as back then. She wants to reach out and touch him, take him in her hands and explore until she coaxes from him the same sounds he made that night in the warehouse.
“Jesus, Scully, what–?!” Mulder springs back from the doorway, hands flying to cover his groin. Subtle, she thinks.
She steps across the threshold into his room. Out of the corner of her eye she spots the television lit up in its entertainment center. She recognizes the scene right without needing to turn and properly look: it’s the same Cherry Li video they watched the night before encountering Reddington. She has interrupted at the point where Jimmy is going down on Candy on his desk. The tape is paused at a close-up of Candy, her face frozen in a perpetual ecstasy.
“You're watching the tape…”
"Yeah. Well, the edited version. The original went back to Brady.” Mulder looks at her sheepishly, “Is that why you’re here? Was it too loud? I can turn it down."
"No. I came over because I…I…” She forces herself to blurt it out before she can stop herself, “Mulder, I can’t stop thinking about that night we were together. I can’t…I want you, Mulder.”
Jane Schoenbrun and 1990s TV Fandom / Fanfic, including TXF
Jane Schoenbrun is the director of Teenage Sex and Death in Camp Miasma (GA’s new film), and before that, I Saw the TV Glow (2024) and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021).
I haven’t seen World’s Fair, but for those who don’t know, I Saw the TV Glow is definitely about being an obsessive fan of a cult 90s TV show (among other things). And I Saw the TV Glow is a masterpiece, btw. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it.
Schoenbrun has spoken in several interviews about growing up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files. Their fandom of these 90s shows in particular seems to be a key motif / metaphor in their work.
Buffy is probably the most obvious influence on I Saw the TV Glow; Schoenbrun even cast a former Buffy cast member (Amber Benson, who played groundbreaking queer character Tara) in a small role in that film.
But I think it’s a pretty safe bet that GA is further evidence Schoenbrun is casting their old childhood crushes in their films. And WHY TF NOT, right? I mean, more power to them.
I was saying something along these lines in tags elsewhere while noting that Schoenbrun has mentioned being active in 1990s online fandom / fanfic communities, and @laurencem wondered if we could look them up on Gossamer. Sadly the below interview with Schoenbrun from Bustle from the time of I Saw the TV Glow’s release suggests no, we can’t. But it’s interesting reading nonetheless. Short excerpt below.
***
At one point, I understand you wrote Buffy the Vampire Slayer and X-Files fan fiction, and I’m dying to know what your fan fic was about.
Well, actually, I totally know what my Buffy reboot would be.
Oh, yeah?
I would love to reboot Buffy. I’ve got a whole pitch. If anyone wants to give me a call... I don’t know that I would actually want to do it, because the idea of rebooting a thing that you love so deeply feels treacherous. Can you ever really reclaim the magic of childhood? I feel like I made a film about how precarious that notion is.
And my X-Files fan fiction was a mess. I was like 10 years old, and I don’t quite remember what I was writing. I definitely made up some fake Buffy spoilers at one point. I loved spoilers as a kid. I wanted to be in the writer’s room even when I was 10.
this isn’t a spoiler cause it’s shown in the trailer but i liked in teenage sex and death at camp miasma how the actress who plays the young version of gillian anderson in the original camp miasma film has red hair in that film. because of dana scully
Chapter 5: A F*ck to Remember (Cumming Soon... sorry I had to)
Chapter 4 summary: It's the final showdown at Reddington's warehouse. How will Mulder and Scully handle their most intimate performance yet? Will they finally be able to escape their captor and his sick plans? Read on to find out.

Reddington’s Warehouse
Out of breath, Scully collapses next to Mulder. It’s strange to think about all that has transpired between them sexually. In fact, she’s lost count of how many orgasms she’s had tonight. More than she’s ever had before in one night, that’s for sure.
She is already anticipating the next scene with trepidation. What will Reddington do with them now? Will it be another humiliation? The uncertainty makes her feel vulnerable and a bit insecure. Mulder must be feeling the same way.
“I’m afraid to think about what Reddington has in store for us next,” she admits.
“God, I know. This really isn’t how I pictured our first time,” Mulder blurts out. He winces immediately, like he is afraid he has just ruined the moment.
“Me either," Scully says quietly. By his facial expression, she can tell her answer seems to have surprised him.
“You've really thought about it?" It’s one of the rare occasions in his life where he sounds skeptical.
“Well, yeah,” Scully pauses, faltering with her words. She hadn’t planned on admitting it to him, but it's only fair given his admission of the same. "I'll admit it's crossed my mind a time or two."
"Just a time or two, though, huh?” Mulder asks softly.
She feels her cheeks grow hot, and she hides her face in his shoulder. Nearly lost against his skin, she mumbles, “Shut up, Mulder.”
February 20, 1991:
Ms. Anderson, who was giving her first interview, was pale and looked a bit queasy. When she spoke it was with a vaguely British accent, which comes partly from having lived in London until she was 10 -- her father attended the London Film School, then stayed on -- and partly, she said, from being around Ms. Blethyn. She spoke about herself haltingly, with much of the deadpan quality that her character has in the play.
"When Lynne had my resume in her hand and said, 'Is this all you've done?' I didn't know what she meant," Ms. Anderson said. "I thought I had done a lot. But once I was hired, a big fear of mine was letting Lynne down. She was taking a big risk, and I didn't want her to find out she'd made a mistake." [...]
It's a funny story, but staying employed is every actor's concern. Ms. Anderson says: "There is a slight fear this will be my first and last job for a while, but that's in every actor's mind as long as they live. I tend to have a great deal of faith that wherever my life goes, it's the best thing for me." [...]
Ms. Anderson is quick to compliment her. "It's so wonderful to watch you and Lynne work together," she said to Ms. Blethyn. "The silent understandings they have about the character, and the way they can verbalize what's missing, what they need. The thought-instinct process is so precise." She sighs. "That's one thing that only experience gives you. For me it takes quite a lot longer to come up with what's happening."
"As long as you come up with it, dear," Ms. Blethyn said without missing a beat. And they both laughed.

It couldn't have happened any better for Gillian Anderson if Schwab's Drug Store were still in business. A 1990 graduate of the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago, the young actress moved to New York six months ago, found an apartment in Greenwich Village and, when she wasn't auditioning, worked as a waitress at Dojo, a Japanese health food restaurant on St. Mark's Place. She made barely enough money to cover her rent, and the only theater she saw was a performance of "Lettice and Lovage" with Maggie Smith, where she says she practically got a nosebleed in the back of the balcony.
When Mary Louise Parker dropped out of "Absent Friends" because of illness, Ms. Anderson's agent sent her to audition for the part of Evelyn, a sullen young mother in Alan Ayckbourn's black comedy about a group of friends who console an acquaintance on the death of his fiancee. (The play runs through March 17 at the Manhattan Theater Club.) Ms. Anderson's first reading warranted a callback "to make sure it wasn't a fluke," said the director, Lynne Meadow, and when the second reading went well, the actress was hired on the spot. It was her first job in the theater, and the rest of the cast had started rehearsals a week earlier....
Now, in this dreariest of theater seasons, Ms. Anderson is one of two actresses, both in the same play and both new to New York, whose performances are causing some excitement....
Ms. Meadow said: "I didn't realize we would find someone quite this green. But it is one of those great stories, where someone is cast purely on ability. Gillian's background is improvisational and she took those instincts and put them into the highly technical style Alan Ayckbourn writes in, which is not free-flowing at all. It has to be played the way it's written, so our work was extremely specific, concrete."
Season 1 Scully being so smitten with Mulder that she asks him if he has a girl coming over to his hotel room…honey that man does not know any girls besides you. She still hasn’t figured out he’s a loser yet 😔
no no but @leiascully I’ve thought this too: sometimes i feel like the only person who thinks she's asking him if he hired a sex worker#he definitely doesn't know girls in some other random town#what girl would be coming over
I mean she’s aware of his porn habit, he “jokes”about 1-900 numbers, he apparently doesn’t have a girlfriend - she’s gotta be thinking, a man this physical has to be getting companionship some way or another … but also she’s seen the way every woman looks at him, so she’s probably also thinking it’s equally likely that he did manage to pull at some point - five minutes at the Hertz counter while she’s in the ladies’ room, he’s got himself a date when the associate’s shift ends🤷♀️
at first you think mulder is a bad boy and that’s why scully likes him but then you keep watching and you find out mulder is a very very very good boy. and THAT’S why scully likes him
This is my second Spooky Award post. It's apparently a series! My post about Spookys 1998 is here.
The Spooky Awards were the annual awards given to X-Files fan fiction from 1995-2004 (except for 1997). They were voted on by fans and were always a bit contentious. You can read more about this at Fanlore or my previous post on the topic. The award categories changed pretty drastically changed them every year: look how different 2000's are from 1998's!
But ... this was apparently a loaded topic. Check out this lively discussion about what the Spookys' categories should be in 1999. Also, there were apparently no 1997 awards because of ballot stuffing during the 1996 Spookys, which seems like it was a whole exciting fandom drama! But I digress.
Originally I was going to focus this post on the 1999 Spooky Awards because, you know, they came consecutively after 1998 (and because @amplifyme won a lifetime achievement award that year! did y'all know that? it seems deserved for sure, although she must have been awfully youthful to be getting a lifetime achievement award).
But once I looked over the full list for 2000, I couldn't resist choosing 2000. Nearly every fic on the list is familiar to me. These are some masterpieces. This had to be one of the high point years for fic, at least in my book. So many of these are still on my rec lists! (And not just mine!) I mean, right?
Some trends I notice for the winners of this year: lots of angst. XF fic always includes angst, but oof, 2000's winners had so much. More angst than smut, I would say, although there's smut, too. This is interesting because in 2000 canon, of course, we're in season 7 and things are generally lighter and flirtier. Well, I guess Sein und Zeit / Closure, Orison and the season finale are plenty angsty, and there are fics here about those episodes.
I also notice a 2000 trend for post-apocalyptic fic and fic with clever and grim twists. Of course, in canon, the mytharc is pointing to likely colonization at this point, there were lots of 90s alien invasion stories in general. And who knows, maybe we have some general turn-of-the-millenium apocalyptic vibes in the air, too? Pop culture of the late 90s / early 2000s also really liked clever plot concepts and twists (See: Se7en, Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, The Others). So these make sense as fanfic elements.
At any rate, I present to you ... the XF fandom's Spooky Award Winners of 2000. (I will get back to 1999, I promise! And the others!) I do have to split this up in two posts because of link limits, but I will link the second part below. Let me know what you notice / think.

Last film you watched in the cinema?
Project Hail Mary, I believe.
Film that always makes you cry?
Joy Luck Club, Rudy, Les Miserables
Film you know every single word to?
Disney's Robin Hood, Clue, The Sound of Music
Favourite 2000s teen movie?
Bring It On, Juno, Napoleon Dynamite.
Most embarrassing "guilty pleasure" film?
I'm not really guilty about it, but I have a very soft spot for the 1990s film Far and Away with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, and it doesn't seem like many other people do.
Film that changed your life?
Groundhog Day? is that weird to say?
Favourite movie snack?
Boring, but I really, really love popcorn. I also like Junior Mints.
Your go-to movie quote?
Juno: You're, like, the coolest person I've ever met, and you don't even have to try.
Paulie: I try really hard, actually.
The most overrated film ever?
I don't know about the "most overrated film ever," but I was a teen when Pulp Fiction came out, and I remember everyone raving about it and me trying very hard to understand and appreciate why. Now, having seen a lot more Tarantino and feeling more confident in my adult opinions, I'm going to say there's not as much there there. It's stylistically interesting, but I think it's overrated.
Favourite director?
I enjoy Wes Anderson an awful lot. Peter Weir. Peter Jackson. Greta Gerwig. Definitely intrigued by Ryan Coogler.
First movie you remember seeing in theaters?
Winnie the Pooh? Maybe The Muppet Movie? I do remember seeing E.T. in the theater on first release. I was little and I didn't have any idea what it was about.
Horror, comedy, or romance?
Romance or comedy.
The ultimate "Top 10" favorite movies of all time?
Well, this isn't possible and changes all the time.
Rushmore
The Truman Show
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Sinners
Sixth Sense
Fellowship of the Ring
Hunger Games
Spotlight
Groundhog Day
Dirty Dancing
If I have some kind of trend, I tend to like these things: well-written dialogue, historical fiction, fantasy or supernatural elements, a high concept / metaphorical or allegorical story, social justice / underdog struggles, romance. Maybe I also have a weakness for good costumes and production design.
Consider yourself tagged if you want to do this.
(Only if you want to answer and I'm not prying too much, I am curious about how @randomfoggytiger has never seen a movie in the theater. Is it not common where you live? I grew up in a very movie-attending time and place, I guess, lol. I admit I still go to the movie a lot, even theme screenings and whatnot, although it's more comfy to watch at home.)
Mulder and Scully find out what Reddington has in store for them: lots of orgasms.
Note: There are six orgasms, but I liked this title better. Also, this is the chapter with homoeroticism.
Warnings: dubious consent, canon typical violence and villainy.
Reddington’s Warehouse
Chatsworth, CA
Mulder watches as Scully stumbles over to sit on the edge of the bed. She's a bit dazed and out of breath after her Reddington-induced orgasm. “Are you okay?" he asks softly.
"I think so…” she pauses. Her face is flushed, and she is still breathing heavily. “I don't know what happened to me."
"He put the whammy on you, Scully. He did the same thing to me.“ Mulder presses for more details. "You didn't lose consciousness?”
"Um. No. Something just came over me, something I can't explain. I felt light-headed and woozy. It was so strange, Mulder."
“I know exactly what you mean. If you're anything like me. It'll take you a few minutes to recover." Now that he has confirmed Scully is alright, it's time to start planning their escape. “I'm going to find out what he has planned for us.”
Scully nods, still dazed. Mulder's attention turns back to their captor. “What do you want from us, Reddington?” Mulder asks hoarsely.
“I’m so glad you asked. First, we’re going to start with the foreplay. Our little lady here is going to ride your face like the sexy minx that she is. The rest of the scenes will be a surprise. Isn't that exciting?”
Mulder's swallows. The idea of Scully riding his face is one of his most guarded fantasies. But he also feels guilt and anger over Scully being forced to do something so intimate. He looks over to Scully on the edge of the bed; she's clearly blushing.
Maybe he can distract Reddington with another question. “Doesn't a good director tell his actors what he has planned so they can be prepared?"
"What do you know of it, FBI man? I learned from the best directors that you want to keep your actor's reactions fresh. It's more real that way."
"What if we refuse to do what you ask?” Mulder asks evenly. Keeping his anger and fear in check.
“If at any point either of you tries to disobey my rules, you know what’s going to happen next. Ka-pow!” He laughs, delighted with himself. “Okay, Agent Scully, our leading man is ready for you. But I’m going to need you to get comfortable and take off that bulky suit.”
Scully clenches her jaw. “No. I'm not going to do that.”
“It wasn’t a request.”
“And I don’t answer to you.” Her voice is stern. Mulder is glad to see she's feeling like herself again.
“Oh, well, you’re no fun. But that’s okay, I can just give Agent Mulder a little zap - that should convince you to listen...”
“Don’t listen to him, Scully! Uh, ow…” Suddenly, the metal around his dick comes alive with a painful electrical pulse that surges around his cock and balls. He yelps in pain, the surge feels like it travels right up his spine. His hair stands up on end.
Scully jumps up. “Stop! What are you doing to him?!” she yells, panicked eyes jumping frantically between Mulder’s jerking body and the direction of Reddington’s voice. “Okay, okay!”
“Sc- Scully -!” Through gritted teeth, Mulder tries to protest; The last thing he wants is her to strip down for this creep. He is prepared to endure the pain if it means keeping Scully out of this.
Scully ignores him.
“I’ll do what you ask, just stop hurting him!” She shrugs off her blazer, demonstrating her compliance. “See?”
“That’s what I like to see.”
Another jolt of electricity pulses through his cock, and he yelps in pain.
