something i noticed

hey, i’m really sorry if this offends anyone, but i’ve been seeing a lot of similar patterns lately.

so, the kin community had a really huge boost of members in about 2014 or 2015. it was mostly people who believed in reincarnation or such, or people who were just getting into it (both just getting on the bandwagon and learning something new about themselves). today, the kin community has died down quite a bit. and i know there are lots of you out there who are just as passionate as me, or maybe you’re just a casual therian / firm believer in reincarnation.

but what i’ve noticed is that there’s been a huge decrease of people who actually believe in reincarnation and the such and actually ‘care’ about kin. most people are treating it as just a silly game or something, i’ve seen tons of people refer to it as roleplaying.and, i know everyone has their own perspective and definition of what kin really is, but… i’m pretty sure that’s not what any of this is? wouldn’t that be a synpath or otherhearted? relating with a character because you identify with them a lot or roleplaying as a character you relate with or project onto isn’t what kin is at all, and i’m seeing tons of people getting all the definitions mixed together and it’s almost kind of alarming. from my understanding, it’s about identifying AS, not with characters, and in the case of therians (and even fictional characters!), learning about your past lives and connecting with them. this isn’t a lifestyle – it’s not something you necessarily need to devote your time and identity to, but it also isn’t some silly hobby or game. i’m not saying you have to take it seriously to be considered ‘valid’, but please do some research before you call yourself otherkin, fictionkin, or a therian!

again, i’m really sorry if i offended anyone. reincarnation is a huge thing in my family’s culture, and i’ve been a firm believer of it since i was young, it’s just a really big part of my identity and it kind of disheartens me to see that the most of the community nowadays is people who aren’t even sure if they’re kin or not. :(

You are entirely correct, but you do seem a little confused so I’d like to explain what happened here.

Otherkinity, or rather, a very very warped version of it came to tumblr. I’d like to say 2012-2014, but honestly, I don’t remember. One of the earliest records we have of this warped version on tumblr is the Yandere Bitch Club. There aren’t many records left of them, but there are people who saw it firsthand and can tell you about it. The YBC was a few white girls pretending to be Japanese transwomen with DID in hopes of claiming all their favourite anime characters as their fictotypes without encountering doubles.

They are the ones who started the “kin is a verb” and “you can’t be kin outside of your race” - along with other misinformation. They used their definitions and false authority to try and dictate others, but otherkin either looks crazy or super cool to outsiders, so they and others like them drew a lot of people in. Mostly teenagers.

Effectively, we were looking at the start of a cult-like mentality. Now, I heard about the community in 2015 or so, so I didn’t witness this myself. It wasn’t as bad as it is now about it, but it was kinda bad. It spun out of control and we were looking at a few hundred to a couple thousand people who aren’t otherkin, but think it’s a fancy roleplaying thing or a coping mechanism that allows them to dictate fandom and control others.

And yes, a large percentage of these people, who we’re going to call tumblrkin as that’s what they’re generally called, are also fandom antis. The older term for them is wishkin, but tumblrkin are the warped cult-like teenagers (and sometimes folks in their early 20s) who do this. They don’t understand it’s a personal spiritual and / or psychological belief. They have no idea what it actually is. It’s swapping kintypes like trading cards and using them to control people. And then it’s all dusted up in pastel pink, ‘uwu’ concern trolling, ‘think of the poor defenseless minors / POC!!’, and glitter.

It’s toxic and vicious is what it is. I had a tangle with it about a year ago. I still have no idea if the 21yo guy who got dragged into it was an actual pedophile or if he was framed because claiming ‘pedophile’ is a really good way to ruin someone’s life and 13yos are vicious and don’t understand consequences. (My digestive system is also still royally fucked up.)

The amount of actual otherkin and fictionkin is about the same ratio as always - maybe a little bit more, as the community gains more visibility and more people have words for their experiences. But never, and I cannot emphasize this enough, never take tumblrkin for actual otherkin unless you know that they are. Because they’re not. They’re so, so not, and all they’re doing is spreading misinformation and hurting people.

If you think you can correct some of them, try. But if you can’t or if you know you don’t have the patience / the willpower, don’t even bother, just block and move on. It’s not worth it.

That being said, if someone who was previously tumblrkin wants to know what’s really going on, what otherkinity and fictionkind actually are - tell them! Let them know! And if they need help getting out of tumblrkin spaces, help them or direct them to someone who can. I’m all for giving people second chances and listening to them. But be careful about it, and you’ll be okay.

Now you know what happened, so you’ll be able to make better decisions about it now. :D If that helps?

So much, all of this. I've been having doubts lately about trying to correct the community because it's all an echo chamber of people screaming that anything and everything is valid no matter what, which just further endorsed the misinformation and ignorant mindset they all put on. These are generally younger people, very impressionable, and they're being led astray. It pains me to think of how many actual potential otherkin will be misled by misinformation and outside influence, because there's no control of this community. It's a wild dumpster fire and people are just throwing fuel into it with no remorse.

Live life to the fullest I say. Get as much enjoyment as possible out of it. Humans for the most part have the ability to live a comfy life with cool technology and Gunn to be had. Being human is pretty fucking rad sometimes.

This seems so hopeless.

Tumblr as a whole lives in an echo chamber of "you're valid no matter what!" So trying to correct misinformation falls on deaf ears. The trends will continue, the misinformation will be spread, the disaster continues along.

What is it I'm doing here? Do I become another cringe blog? Where am I headed? At best I can keep correcting people, knowing full well they won't listen to anything outside their safety bubble. It's just sad to watch otherkin get dragged through the mud, and all you can do is stand idly by and watch.

Am I the only one who thinks personal pronouns are dumb? Like, I'm not talking about calling a trans woman "she", or using the singular "they" , but the "ze/zer" and "bun/bunself" stuff. That's missing the point of pronouns entirely! They're supposed to quickly inform another about a third's gender: "he" for male, "she" for female, "they" for unknowns, groups, and those who identify as non-binary; "xim" and "sher" tells me nothing. Pronouns aren't "personal", they're basic English grammar!

“Bunself” and the like are especially irritating. Real rabbits don’t use those pronouns!

It's soooo annoying. But it's just part of turning the trans community into a stupid snowflake trend and making actual trans people a laughing stock by bugging them together with the trenders.

I have seen people lose years of growth because they took the word of someone who claimed to know them better than they know themselves and was wrong, or worse, deliberately predatory.

As an addendum, please don’t offer readings like this either. You may have the best of intentions, you may even be right a lot of the time, but you can seriously harm people by being wrong about this. It’s irresponsible. No one is always right. Even if you’re right 98% of the time, that means 2% of the people you read for are misled and their path to understanding themselves is made even more difficult. So never try to tell someone who you think they are. Instead give them the tools to figure it out for themselves.

I have a few things I would like to add as well. First off if someone tells you that they are 100% certain of any aspect of YOUR Identity you should start to question their intentions. The only person who can possibly know who you are is yourself and even then you probably will never be 100% certain.

Secondly doubt is not a bad thing to have for a belief. I am not certain that anything I believe in is true. I believe I am who I think I am, I believe in the religion I have chosen, but I always take into account I could be wrong. That doubt is what encourages me to continue questioning myself and helps me avoid falling into the trap of trying to force others to accept my point of view.

Lastly as someone, I never asked anyone to help me discover my kintype, but I did take shortcuts in discovering my identity, it’s not worth it. I spent months pretending to be someone I am not and I still had to do the self reflection anyways.

Save yourself the trouble, and do it right the first time. You will thank yourself later.

I don’t think that’s the case. Wish fulfillment/imagination/etc. is something you choose to do, or choose to continue doing, and it’s something you can stop doing at any time. Otherkinity isn’t. Someone doesn’t choose to be otherkin, it’s an intrinsic part of their identity that affects them in a big enough way for them to want to label it. Someone can start pretending they’re not human for fun at any time, and stop at any time. Trying to suppress and deny one’s otherkinity, from what I’ve heard of others’ experiences, can frequently have great negative psychological consequences.

Whatever the case, people can believe in it or don’t - I agree with your philosophy. Regardless of whether you believe it’s real, as long as it’s not hurting anyone, why have a problem with it?

Oh, I experienced being a kin firsthand. In elementary school, I was hopelessly in love with werewolves to the point where I was absolutely convinced I was one. I would act like a wolf and tell all my friends that I was a werewolf. They played along with it for a while, then told me how fucking stupid I was. Me being me, I stubbornly refused to believe them and kept on believing I was a werewolf. I even used to have dreams of turning into a wolf and running through forests- not because these are memories of a ‘past life’ or whatever bullshit yall spout, but because I was so infatuated with werewolves that I would make up my own stories of being a werewolf where I was the main character. It took me up until fifth grade to realize how full of shit I had been and now that I know that there are people who are also convinced they are or were some animal or something, it’s kind of saddening because they’re just as childish as I had been in elementary school. And some of these people are older than me, mind you, which makes me feel rather disappointed because I expected more maturity from these people.

You didn't experience being otherkin then, you only experienced an obsession. Otherkin has nothing to do with wanting to be anything, having any control over anything, etc. Being otherkin isn't a choice and it's not fun.

But I also understand why you'd make that connection. Tumblr is not a good representation of what otherkin actually is. 98% are delusional, fakes for attention, or trolls. "Otherkin" on this site act as though they can be whatever they want, identify as all these things they think are cool and popular, and feel special and unique. Otherkin is none of that bullshit.

Plain and simple, it's a community of people who experience species dysphoria against their will. They don't get to choose their identities, they don't get to choose what they feel, and they don't get to choose whether or not to be otherkin. If you ask almost any legitimate otherkin if they want to be kin, it's a resounding "no."
