RogueVexVoid: A Primer

Hey there!

I've finally decided to go an make a proper pinned post for this blog. It's only been a decade.

For anyone new to us, I'm Rogue, Bi/Enby, late 30s, plural. Artist and writer, I work in healthcare and plan on going into Mortuary Science.

A (formerly Catholic, that does come up) pagan and magic/spirit worker, with my fingers in a couple of different pantheons. Our practices, perspectives, and experiences are deeply influenced by our alterhumanity and plurality.

We are otherkin/therian/fictionkin, an assortment of things that can be boiled down to "Walking Spirit Halloween"

We have been around in the general altherhuman, pre 2012 multiple circles and the overlapping pagan/spirit worker communities since around 08/09 and on Tumblr since 2011 (some of you may be more familiar with us via our main blog and online handle that we used to get into so many fucking arguments under @roguesareth )

We generally take a 50/50 approach when it comes to the spiritual/psychological debate. (We have the trauma/AuDHD/OCD/Maladaptive daydreaming to fill out the brain based stuff certainly). Ultimately we care less about WHY we are, just that we are, and so what do we do with it?

So yes, both, same thing to us, essentially. One can not exist without the other, influence each other to the point of can't tell which is which. As above so below.

As mentioned, we are plural. We are primarily a faceted median system, where each facet is a reflection of a kin/fictiotype. (We've seen the terms kinplural or kingenic used for this, which we certainly fit although we have a general dislike of a lot of the -genic and other origin terms) We also have two Fictives proper in residence (although that gets complicated for a few reasons) We've been putting off this whole Plural thing for 15 years so we're still working the kinks out ( 😉 )

2025 was a big year for us, a decade of little change to the status quo and then BAM kin/plural explosion.

A partial history of plural self-advocacy

Plural self advocacy is exactly what it says on the tin: plurals taking control of our own lives and being in charge of how we’re represented. It’s what happens when we speak for ourselves instead of letting singlet academics do it for us. Plural self advocacy has a long history that stretches before the existence of the internet, and it has made a difference. Here are some notable milestones, and what they’ve done for us.

1987ish: Truddi Chase is giving interviews (x, x, x), very openly insisting that her headmates are real people and that integration is not a solution for them.

February 1989: The first issue of Many Voices is published. This newsletter for and by trauma survivors with dissociative disorders is likely one of the first places that plurals could speak about their experiences on their own terms. It would run for over 20 years until 2012, when it was bequeathed to the ISSTD so that the issues could be made publicly available.

1993: Richard P. Kluft’s ‘Clinical Perspectives on Multiple Personality Disorder’ mentions Truddi Chase’s outspokenness against integration, disdainfully. ‘Some perceive the alters as real people’, it says. This paints a clear picture of how multiplicity was perceived at the time.

1995: Astraea’s web is created. This site continues to be one of the biggest plurality resources out there, and Astraea themselves have had a wide reach in plural activism - they’ll come up several more times in this article. They have curated a wide selection of sources on early accounts of plurality, plural involvement with legal issues, and the struggle against psychiatric abuse by all kinds of neurodiverse people, not just plurals.

1998: The Vickis begin to compile experiences of the ‘midcontinuum’, giving us the first terminology to describe median experiences. This is also, as far as we’re aware, the origin of ‘plural’ as an umbrella term.

2001?: darkpersonalities publishes ‘why we are not MPD/DID’, generally regarded as the first known instance of a system explicitly separating themselves from the ‘disorder’ definition. The empowered multiplicity movement grows from this. While many people take a cynical, bitter view towards people who still identify with their diagnosis, it begins to be associated with more sympathetic stances as it develops (x, x, x). Many of us look back disapprovingly on darkpersonalities’ attitude towards triggers and survivorship, but their role was still foundational to the concept of empowered multiplicity.

2002: Tim Bayne writes on the moral defensibility of forced integration, laying out a grounded  philosophical argument for considering non-host plurans autonomous people. It’s unknown what influenced him to write this paper, or whether any plurals were consulted.

2002?: The activist group Pavilion is formed. Their activities include outreach towards mental health professionals and academics, interviewing for radio stations, creating informational pamphlets and compiling resources for plurals and interested singlets.

2003: Matt Ruff, author of Set This House In Order, acknowledges Astraea and a plural friend-of-a-friend for introducing him to natural plurality and the idea that plurals don’t have to integrate, inspiring his book.

2011-2013: The Coalition for DSM-5 Reform writes launches a campaign to urge the DSM taskforce to change much of the proposed writing. This gets a lot of attention from plurals, and as such the DSM-5 revises its definition of DID to include distress/impairment, and for the first time accepts the self-reporting of plurality as valid evidence (x, x). It’s worth noting that this is an incredibly small step - as Astraea’s web says, ‘It was not proposed because therapists are beginning to recognize that non-disordered multiplicity exists; it was proposed in order to accommodate members of cultures and races where being more than one person is contextually normal.’ But it’s a step, nonetheless, that begins to recognize that plurals are the ultimate authorities on our own experiences of ourselves.

May 11, 2015: VICE interviews systems including Astraea and Oure Gaiya for a piece questioning if plurality is always a disorder.

2016: The plurality playbook is published internally at Google. It covers advice for plurals on succeeding in the workplace while dealing with the specific challenges that plurals face, and advice for singlets on respecting and assisting their plural coworkers.

January 18th, 2019: The Double Gears system (well known at the time as streamer and speedrunner protomagicalgirl) disclose their plurality on Hbomberguy’s DK64 stream for Mermaids. The hashtag #pluralgang trends on Twitter as a result, encouraging many people on twitter to come out as plural and many more to realize they’re plural by being introduced to the concept for the first time. #pluralgang has been a consistently active hashtag for the year since its inception and continues to be used to share resources, organize meetups, promote activism and generally remind plurals that they’re not alone.

The plurality playbook is also publicly published around now. In the new foreword, the Lizzes cite the activity surrounding #pluralgang as their motivation for this.

March 2019: The first Plural Positivity World Conference is held. It was created as a counter-conference to the one hosted annually by the ISSTD. The fees for attending the World Congress on Complex Dissociation and Trauma start at $200 for just one day, making attending near-impossible for the lay person. As the Crisses put it, “The ISST-D holding meetings, disseminating information, creating policy, teaching new standards for treatment, discussing new options, or sharing their research findings about us should not be done in a place that by design excludes us.” The Plural Positivity World Conference will run again in 2020.

December 25th, 2019: Power to the Plurals announces The Plural Association, a peer network for plurals which intends to provide phone, email and live chat helplines.

To this day, the overwhelming majority of plural activism has happened outside of the medical model. Improvements in the treatment of plurals have come from us being seen as people, and singlets seeing us as people has come from us viewing ourselves that way - by making spaces for us to understand ourselves and create narratives that aren’t bounded by pathology. Even changes within psychiatry have mostly been motivated by pressure from plurals demanding fairer treatment. It is good, and necessary, for us to speak for ourselves. We have done so much, and still have so much more to do.

What do you mean by source separation being medicalist? Well-meaning question, sorry if we're imposing by asking!

It assumes a medical view of fictivity that doesn't inherently apply to all fictives. Not all fictives are introjects and the original use of fictive was for people who experienced characters coming to life, usually through writing, roleplay, etc, which would usually involve them being 100% their source. Some fictives are more spiritual or walk-ins. The framework doesn't work when applied to non-introjects who might have reasons for just being their source.

Even with introjects, I know there are some who reject the idea that they're just "based on" a fictional character and might just consider themselves to be that character. All types of fictives can have deep views on their identity.

This term was also coined by fictionkin, which is another framework some fictives may fit better and likewise "source separation" isn't really a concept in the same way in fictionkin communities because it's recognized as an involuntary identity.

It also doesn't feel like it accounts for natural character development. If you exist in a system as a fictive for decades, of course you're going to be a different person, but you can still identify as your source and be just "source but 10 years have passed that I've been in this body".

There is something to be said about avoiding harmful behaviors based on your source and finding hobbies outside of your existence in a system in general. I know there are also issues with fictionfolk being too possessive of their source, which is where I've seen a lot of people assume fictionality is unhealthy.

The issue is the way source separation implies you can't be a fictional character and be "functional" is a saneist view that also goes against the ones who coined source as it's being used here, which were fictionkin. There are better ways to encourage developing yourself as a headmate and being less possessive over others - the later I think is a much more important conversation right now because of doubles discourse coming back.

While this isn't a subject we can speak easily about (factives can trigger depersonalization and so we usually just avoid discussing it in depth), I also don't think this should inherently apply to factives. While I don't think factives and fictives are compatible (i.e. telling a person you are them is very different from telling a person you are their character), I don't think telling people "just stop identifying as them" is helpful and it's better to discuss actions and consequences than something that's out of their control.

The same goes for genuinely problematic identities. I think it's better to discuss the ways you present those identities and find a healthy balance that works for yourself than it is to force people to stop what is generally an involuntary identity experience. I don't think any of these should be censored and there should still be spaces to discuss them.

I hesitate to call it inherently medicalist, because there are absolutely cases where some fictionfolk might benefit to stepping back from their identity and that's not inherently medical, but the way it's presented in the plural community comes across as medicalist and I think the premise as I've seen it used is medicalist.

Boy, I admit I don't have much in the way of resources onhand for that specifically; it's a bit out of my scope. I probably can't tell you anything Google can't. It sums up to, starseeds are a New Age concept proposing that certain people are extraterrestrial souls sent to Earth to guide humanity to some kind of ascension. It purports that certain people are born inherently "higher" while others are more "primitive" spiritually speaking, which is already a pretty yikes concept even before you get into the history of this movement and ones like it being deeply steeped in racism and eugenics. Suspiciously, whenever you see physical descriptions of these "higher races," the ones who aren't just bog-standard "greys" always seem to be pale-skinned and often blonde, at least from what I've seen (Pleiadians, one of the most well-known and "highest" races, are literally described as "Nordic aliens" or "indistinguishable from Nordic people").

It's also heavily linked to the idea of aliens "seeding" earth in the past, which is itself a concept steeped in racism and the ideas that a) different peoples are literally different species (some of which are of course "higher" than others) and b) historical people of color of course couldn't actually accomplish anything impressive or significant, it must have been aliens. It's also linked to the idea that Someday Soon™ there will be a great purge, I mean ascension, where the enlightened and spiritual starseeds will rise to a New Earth and everyone else will be left behind (which doesn't sound like the Rapture or like every dream of the Grand Revolution which conveniently doesn't care how many people it leaves behind or kills in the process of creating its new dream).

So. yeah. There's more to it, but that's about all I know off the top of my head and with minimal research (all of which comes up in the first few links of google results for various starseed-related searches). I don't really have any spectacular resources that have all this information in one place, but it's not hard to turn up with a little searching.

and yeah it’s very frequently both white supremecist and ableist. Physical “signs” of bei g a starseed/indigo child/earth angel are often being blonde, having blue eyes, being pale, being very empathetic, being very passive, facing persistent cruelty, and being able to easily “read rooms/intentions”. You might notice that these might also raise red flags for a kid being abused.

often comes with a lore background of being an alien or future being or spirit inhabiting a human body for the purpose of protecting/saving/educating/guiding humanity. They’re seen as paragons of kindness, gentility, and virtue. This often leads adults around them who believe this shit to outsource morality and decision making, use kids to vent to, and punish them for failing at these things.

adults who believe theyre one of these archetypes often have a savior/superiority complex around it and see themselves as above those around them.

i fucking hate these concepts/communities with a passion. I dont think theres any healthy way to engage with them.

While I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, I would like to clarify that you should still at least hear those who are older in the community. They've gone through a lot, have lots of experiences to share, and sometimes hearing those experiences can help you through your own.

The young can learn from the old and the old can also learn from the young.

A young alterhuman does not owe an older alterhuman their ear.

Older alterhumans have just as much (if not sometimes more) capacity to be as biased and misinformed as any alterhuman younger than them. Age does not make wisdom, age does not dictate how worthwhile someone is to listen to.

It is worthwhile to approach someone who has more knowledge in a specific field, discipline, or craft than you and ask them for advice on that specific topic, but that's circumstantially based on what someone has actually done, not age. In this same way, age also does not make knowledge.

So, no. Age has no merit innate in itself. Listen to others based on their actions and if they've proven themself to be trustworthy and accurate, not how many times they've been around the sun.

All of us in the otherkin communities are equal peers. Any of us can listen to, criticize, view with skepticism, or ignore any other of us, according to each of our own personal choices. You, me, any of us. And that's good. Each of us creatures came together in this community because of something in common that we already had before each of us met each other, not because we're looking for gurus telling us what to do, think, or believe. That's a healthy safeguard against cultishness. For this reason, it's a red flag for anyone to proclaim themselves a leader of our communities, whether they get an exaggerated sense of importance about running a chatroom, or whether they give themselves titles such as elder, king, princess, alpha, or graymuzzle. That can be a warning sign that they expect to be treated differently than others in a way that they cannot deserve here.

I think our biggest gripes with the origin label discourse and the general community bend towards "you must categorize yourself under one of two boxes, and the other box is evil" are:

The assumption that experiences have an objective, fundamental truth that allows perfect sorting

The assumption that experiences and understandings of those experiences also never change- that if you can sort yourself into a box, then you should live there forever.

The general "us versus them" of the whole thing.

Point one: experiences of self, identity, consciousness, etc. are all very fuzzy, subjective concepts at the moment. We've yet to pin down what even makes a person conscious, let alone what a person's "I" is. I'm not confident that an objective truth of the self exists.

Maybe some meatspace things do have a usefully objective truth, though more often than not it's filtered through human definitions like anything else- if this desk is a meter long, then how big is a meter, and is a meter truly an objective measurement? Who made it?

What's a person? What's a self? Are those things the same, or different? Where do I end, and where do you begin? Ask ten people and you'll get ten different answers. That's the beauty of it. We don't fully know.

Point two: People change all the time. We are always having new and different experiences in life, and those can shape how you see yourself over time. We used to exclusively see ourselves as a medicalized, psychology-based system. We see ourselves a lot more holistically now, but our life experiences are still just as much a factor as any woo-woo spirituality we experience. That's a change that breaks boxes.

We are not the only system who's changed how they understand themselves over time. Spirituality, medical psychology, and other frameworks are neither mutually exclusive nor fixed in place. Like the framework of plurality, they're a way to understand the world and your experiences in it. They're an attempt to make sense of it all. If it's not working, put it down and try something else.

Point three: it's slowly improving, but the average Joe still has no idea plural people exist outside of horror movie serial killers and shock stories. They don't think they'll ever meet a multiple, and if they do, they're still using Multiple Personality Disorder as a label for it regardless of the system's actual experiences.

We have bigger problems than each other. Biting each other's throats won't help us any more than infighting and scapegoating has helped in any other community. The fact that we're still fighting over this in one form or another 20 years later is depressing.

animism does not always mean “everything has a human-like soul.”

how do i live respectfully in a world full of beings?

I feel like folks need to talk more about types fading. We grow up, we change, and we figure out our identity more. That doesn’t mean that what we experienced wasn’t real. That type helped us understand ourselves more and we simply no longer connect with it and that’s okay.

I recently lost my connection to Cloudjumper and no longer feel that I am him. I still love him dearly and what he represented to me as I was discovering my fiction identity will always be important.

I think with all of the younger alterhumans joining online spaces, there is a heavy want to know exactly who you are right at the start. That’s not how identity works. It takes lots of time and you’re gonna make mistakes. The internet has made it really easy for others to shame individuals who haven’t fully figured out their types or change their types. You are growing and changing so your types will change to.

Something might fit right now, but one day you may find out about a creature that represents you more so that connection to the old type fades. That doesn’t make the new type or the old type and more or less valid then the other.

Take your time. There is no rush to finding out who you are.
