Little guy wandering about the chemical vent glades.
Ok, I'm in the stage where I'm starting to get excited about these fuzzy little buggos. They're still in development, and I think currently they bear too much resemblance to the Tetrox; I want them to be distinct. That said, I am really happy with just how alien they come across.
To be honest, I feel the design of the Tetrox is a little dated with my current standards (I made them ~7 years ago after all.) I like how endearing they are, but they're a little too cartoony and raptor-like for the more strange biological direction I want to go in. There's a fine line between "I wanna pet it" and "what the hell am I looking at?"
If anyone has any feedback or wants to share their creature design knowledge, I'd love to hear it!
"if Jax is a trans woman she's still an abuser so she's bad representation so the show is transphobic" you're an idiot. you want your blorbos to be perfect ideal angels, I want my blorbos to be realistic, nuanced, flawed human beings, we are not the same. I LIKE that she's messy and fucked up and problematic, I think it's a realistic depiction of how a lot of repressed and traumatized trans women are. I think the show goes to great lengths to explore how and why she is the way she is, and to evoke sympathy for this kind of person. it doesn't excuse her actions but it does make them understandable. and I think the fact women like that deserve sympathy is an idea worth stating and worth shouting. yes she's a bully and she hurt everyone around her and that may never change. she still deserves sympathy.
“Eridians dislike earth because they abandoned Grace.” *Incorrect Buzzer Sound* ya missed the point of the story buddy! It’s not about someone being ‘bad’ it’s about the incredible power of love and that love being worth dying for!
Gimmie Eridians who are absolutely heartbroken to hear that humans where so desperate and so scared that they where willing to part with not just one Grace, there were three of them! Gimmie Eridians touched to find that the humans planned a way for their sacrifices to be as comfortable as possible. Gimmie Eridians who send earth a message saying “We know it must have hurt to send your heroes to die, but one made it and he’s safe here. We lost 22 good Eridians on the journey we would have lost 23 if not for your Grace.”
Give me humans sitting on Earth slowly coming to the conclusion that when we look up not only are we not alone, someone out there is alive because of one of us. That no matter what we think of ourselves a whole species thinks highly of us because we helped save the galaxy. Give me humans who figure out how to send a probe to Erid filled to the brim with messages for Grace and footage of a monument being raised that reads his name, his crews names, and then “in memory of the 22 Eridians who lost their lives on the journey to save the stars.”
Hey! This is F-Tang Steve, the inventor of Giant Armoured Serpentids. I ran across your art of them and wanted to say how cool it was, and how happy it makes me to see that people like the alien species I made!
I don't really use tumblr and this says it should be a question, so to ask, what is it you like about giant armoured serpentids?
Oh wow!! I didn't expect to get a comment from the Serpentid creator this morning, hi there! Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm absolutely stoked to be receiving a compliment from you!
As for what I like about Serpentids.. Aside from their neat design visually, I'm an enjoyer of the Serpentid mannerisms. They are very distinctly aliens with their own unique conventions and anthropomorphizing them rather than adjusting to their own customs will absolutely get you eaten on the job. And I think that's pretty cool.
The Ahnāwi are one of the aliens from my setting, Lost Suns. They're tipedal aliens, evolving from terapods similar to tiktaalik but took a different approach to locomotion. They communicate through both sound and bioluminesense, evolving on a world often shrouded in the shadow of it's gas giant.
They tend to live in groups up to 5 members, with solitary members being rare. All of them are born male, with females being males that transition to female once they become the head of these groups. Their reproductive and digestive systems share the same tracts. Just thought I'd mention that
One of many negotiations brew on the eastern semi-arid steppe of Tira-292b. A Foreign diplomat listens to a matriarch of a neighboring clan as they discuss future trade deals.
Said matriarch is adorned in the exognaths, armor of an Aratrodont, and the pelt and fangs of the former and a Teleopsid. While clothing may be rare among the Neotectons. This clan holds reverence of outfits of prey-made materials.
In the Back is the Trade itself; a variety of seeds, meats, weapons and blueprints in exchange for a neotect helper ready to take the place of a recently passed breeding male.
The second of four art pieces i made for the Alien biospheres season finale. Technically it's the third since another one appears before it but we ball. Really love how this turned out, especially the ambient light and overall "washed out" color palette
Loved drawing the neotects and the deep dive into their psychology and it's cultural implications.
It's been over 2 years now and my artstyle has evolved so much that my old profile pictue no longer really represents where I'm at artistically. So I made a new one in the span of a day. And decided to transform the color palette of the old background into an actual flag that represents a part of me. Happy pride everyone hope you all had a good month <3
as an early celebration of what I believe is the common consensus of Femboy day, here's some "femboy" sophonts I drew last year to celebrate this unofficial holiday. Each description is ordered clockwise to their respective sophont
The Arrtas (pronounced with a trilling R) are a sapient species of 10 foot tall arthropod-like Centaurs. They hail from the sprawling savannahs of a temperate planet that is home to purple horsetail-like plants and large arthropod-like hexapods, an interesting feature is that there is a single supercontinent that stretches across the western equator to the south-eastern hemisphere. The snout on their heads is actually a sheath for a hollow space connected to their respiratory system that allows them to produce vowels. And they can produce a clicking sound using an 8 jawed mouth located on their upper chest. They have developed a culture similar to 1920's America, but without all the racism and sexism and homophobia. And unlike the united states during this time period, they have never experienced any great depression, allowing this culture to proliferate and continue on. Their gender norms are also nearly non-existent. So most Arrta are androgynous or nonbinary. And due to the abundance of purple flora on their homeworld, wearing yellow clothing is a sign of prestige and wealth
The Lortexi are a sapient species of radially symmetrical, mammal-like organisms native to a planet locked in a permanent ice age. For the longest time, their civilization has been ruled and governed by only a single faction. A large and omnipresent Technocracy that has abandoned all ethics and any moral compass, seeing them as an obstacle in their pursuit of knowing everything. While this has allowed the Lortexi to know everything about the body and developed cures for every known disease and disorder, this also means that they have committed countless crimes against humanity with their experiments. But luckily it would come to and end when they eventually lose a war with a rival civilization and are forced to be ethical once again. During early space exploration and colonization of nearby star systems. A counterculture had developed that visually opposed the bright and simple cleanliness of most technocrats with the alien equivalent of Emo. Due to the technocracy's eagerness and curiosity about this counter-culture, they have studied and researched nearly everything about them.
The Q-ri-Zocs are a sapient species of tripods native to a former paradise planet now recovering from the scars of nuclear war. Wildlife of their homeworld consists of blue fern-like flora and 5 limbed arthropod-like fauna. Most Q-ri-zocs are ruled by matriarchs, not just in society, but even in biology. Males of the species are usually colorful and energetic, but are weak and stand at a height of 3-4 feet. Meanwhile the females are a dull gray but are very strong and stand at a height of 6-7 feet tall. However because of this, societal problems such as sexism and transphobia have been prevalent for a very long time with constant internal conflicts between frustrated males that are treated as mere property and power hungry matriarchs who will stop at nothing to keep the males subserviently. This constant clash has only accelerated further when the Q-ri-Zocs made first contact with other alien civilizations. This would end in an all out revolt that ends in a victory for the once discriminated males, and for the first time in eons, male Q-ri-zocs are finally treated equally within their own societies.
Each species in this art piece is from a personal project detailing the history of the universe and the countless civilizations
While having evolved in New Guinea and Australia, the Daws have been a cosmopolitan species since ancient times.
What they lack in dexterity and strength they make up for in vocal repertoire. They are exceptionally skilled at speech, readily learning and using the calls of animals to tame and use them. They have long learned the speech of other intelligent species to cooperate with them. Before people knew of other intelligent beings across the world, all species first knew of the little people in the trees.
Highly social and gregarious, they form especially close bonds with their mates, most often as monogamous pairs but occasionally as triads and quartets. Daws lack any form of obvious sexual dimorphism or gender roles. Usually both sexes are expected to court, be colorful, brood their eggs, and tend to eachother.
It is claimed by some that it is the Daws who are the most important of all species, that it was them who taught all other species their gift of language. But this is what Daws themselves believe, and they might be biased.
Originating from the African continent, the Ocos are one of the most widespread populations of intelligent species, with some of the biggest population centres in Africa, Asia, India, and the European Archipelago.
While omnivorous, Ocos seem to have evolved from specialized predators of mammals, and retain exceptionally acute hearing and crepuscular habits. While still widely farmed a livestock, some cultures view mammals as “pestilent” and unsuitable as food. Fish, fruit, and eggs are also common favorite foods
Despite only having mild sexual dimorphism (the most obvious difference is males usually having light facial disks and females darker ones), Oco society is traditionally highly segregated, adults of different sexes often expected to not interact at all unless with family or mates, essentially living in separate parallel societies. This traditional segregation however has been weakening in recent years.
It is claimed by some that Ocos are the wisest and most clever species of all, but you only hear this from Ocos themselves, they might be a bit biased on the topic.
Hailing from the harsh planet of Ettera, Knights are the only sophont in the Zhagaviit system made of two consciousnesses.
---
At last, here they are! Nearly finished with redesigning every Vivere 44 species. These guys are retconned werewolves which I posted about some time ago. You might have noticed I brought back some space unicorn aspects as well! They've been through so many design changes but I've finally settled on something solid.
More information below!
I'll try to keep this concise. Most of this info is introductory biology.
Knights are the only sophonts living on Ettera, a mostly barren planet where survival is tough. Their civilisation is the least advanced compared to others in Zhagaviit, such as Arrows and Sea Crawlers. They were the third species to be contacted by the ZGC (Zhagaviit Galactic Community) followed by Post Humanity. Knights are known for being hardy, efficient, and motivated.
If it isn't already clear enough, Knights are two species in a symbiotic relationship acting as one individual. Helmets and Hosts have an evolutionary history so intertwined that one cannot survive without the other.
The Helmet is attached to the head of the Host, and will remain there for the rest of their life (unless separation happens - but we'll get into that later). In the relationship, their role is vision and dexterity. Since the Host is effectively blind, it is the Helmet's job to guide them. Their hands are also important, being the Knight's primary manipulators. They played a large part in early tool use. The Helmet lacks a mouth, and receives all its nutrients from the Host through a specialised organ not unlike an umbilical cord.
The Host is essentially the main body of the Knight. Wolflike and mammalian in nature, the Host is the Helmet's mode of transportation. Because they need to eat for two, Hosts are omnivorous and will eat just about anything. Although majority of their diet is comprised of meat, they are capable of digesting plant matter and bones. They are highly skilled and effective hunters.
It is in both party's best interests to assimilate as soon as possible. The Host cannot see without a Helmet, and within a few weeks bonding will become impossible. The stakes are higher for a newborn Helmet, because they cannot feed by themselves and will starve in under a week without a Host or an artificial feeder tube. Prior to first contact with the ZGC, Knights did not have the technology for artificial feeders, and infant death rates were high.
So how do two beings coordinate one body? The fact is that once assimilation occurs, they become one being. The Helmet's brain and the Host's brain are connected by millions of nerves exchanging signals. It's complicated, but the best way to describe the experience would be a 'mutual trance' in which full body coordination is achieved. They have shared interests and intentions. However, a Knight can mentally separate the Helmet and the Host, gaining back individuality; they do this for many reasons, perhaps to discuss something among themselves or simply for company. Yet on the whole, a Knight will spend 80% of their life in this 'trance'.
Both Helmets and Hosts have noticeable sexual dimorphism. Male Helmets are called Pikes, and females are called Guards. Pikes are distinguished by their horn, bold stripes, and more prominent crest spines. Guards lack a horn and have less contrast in their thinner markings.
Female Hosts are called Forts. They are larger than males and have a mane of fur on the back of their necks. Male Hosts, Spires, lack this mane.
In Knight society, individuals are usually referred to based on their combination of Host and Helmet. Since there are four sexes involved, there are four possible combinations.
Guard-spire [female Helmet, male Host]
Pike-fort [male Helmet, female Host]
Guard-fort [female Helmet, female Host]
Pike-spire [male Helmet, male Host]
(Knight languages have their own version of pronouns for each, but in English all are referred to as they/them by default. Of course, each individual has their own preferences. Usually a Knight will refer to themselves as we/us).

I'll get into Knight social structure, cultures and more in another post! For now, if you have any questions, feel free to send an ask. Always happy to answer!
it's so funny to me that conservatives think the reason university students become more liberal is because of the actual course material and not like. the fact that universities in the US introduce are oftentimes the first place Americans are introduced to a walkable environment with affordable health care, with community spaces for any affiliation under the sun where they give you free resources and cheap food. with included public transit and opportunities for training in your field of choice. and you realize that for how much you're spending on tuition/taxes, yeah, you do deserve these things, it would be insane not to have those. and then you graduate and go back to having to buy a car to drive 20 minutes to the grocery store.
It's also one of the first places a lot of people raised in insular, conservative areas meet "the other". People of other ethnicities and cultures, people of other religions, other gender presentations, sexualities, etc. You get to know them and start realizing how much of what you "knew" about them was myth or straight-up propaganda.
It's a lot harder to demonize queer people when the person helping you pass calculus is a trans woman, or your lab partner talks about his boyfriend exactly the same way you talk about yours. It's a lot harder to believe that immigrants are out to get you when your Hindu roommate cheerfully shares a care package of homemade goodies from home, or Malia down the hall covers your lunch because you forgot to bring your wallet to study group. You start rethinking some assumptions when the 6 foot spike-encrusted goth who sits behind you in lecture hall shows everyone photos of his baby niece dressed like a puppy for Halloween with all the pride of a new parent, and you remember when your flannel and camo-wearing uncle did the same thing at work last year with photos of your little sister.
Suddenly all those "others" are just people. They're your friends, classmates, coworkers, and maybe even romantic interests. And that's a lot harder to hate or fear.

restoration ecology tends to want to restore to a past state of an ecosystem, but magically that past state never involved people! Harvest, reciprocity, etc are all ignored because we pretend there's such a thing as prairie without people. Turns out, that imagined prairie never existed, there were always people here and there should people involved in restored prairie too!
