What donât I love about Tony? Tony Goldwyn is a phenomenal human being. Heâs smart, heâs funny, heâs humble, heâs⊠I mean, I would say his one flaw is that heâs not good to look at, but you know you gotta just do what you can to work around it âcause so much of the rest of him is so great. George Clooney, Kerry Washington and other Hollywood stars are co-founding a public film school in Los Angeles to help high schoolers from underserved communities break into the industry, officials said Monday.
In partnership with the Los Angeles United School District, the star-studded advisory board are spearheading a magnet program to provide students with curriculum, practical training and internships centered around the television and film production industry.
âOur aim is to better reflect the diversity of our country. That means starting early,â Clooney said in a statement. "It means creating high school programs that teach young people about cameras, and editing and visual effects and sound and all the career opportunities that this industry has to offer.â
Superintendent Austin Beutner said in a statement on Monday that the initiative will âhelp open the doors of opportunity for a diverse group of students from underserved communities.â
âPhysics is involved in the choice of a lens by a cinematographer, math is part of the foundation for a musical score in a film, critical thinking skills are needed to design a set, screenwriters needs a foundation in literacy, and a make-up artist needs to know the chemistry of the different materials they might use â all of this will be tied into the curriculum at the school,â he said.

Anyone who wants a love story between Olivia and Jake does not love Olivia, and has not been paying attention to Scandalâs narrative...
Iâm free-wheeling here.
Iâm truly sorry for people who think O[redacted] is âonâ and that includes the shallow media because the show isnât selling that. Yes, Olivia having sex twice on a Sunday with [redacted] is trite, boring and gross. Itâs kinda supposed to be the latter. There is nothing empowering, desirable, or âgrownâ about that nolationship. Their fluid exchange, lack of intimacy and future reflect the choices Olivia has made for herself. Those choices? Giving up on living in the light. Â And since she is the sun (407), light itself, Olivia has given up on herself. Thereâs no more light in her apartment (not a coincidence that in the midst of this dark lair she finally invited daddy over for Sunday dinner); her clothes are predominately not white. Sheâs not even practicing white knight-hood at work. She is impotent in every way, and this is reflective in the substantive conversation she has with Huck in 512. She tells him the only winning move is not t play. Thatâs giving up; thatâs not taking command of her lifeâwhat (to me) the S5 poster eventually signifies for her.
So, Jake is a manifestation of all the dark and nasty inside Olivia. The Olivia who thinks she is so profoundly skewed, that she would not inflict her fuckedupedness on new dick. (after all, she didnât leave Fitz because he wasnât enough; she left because she wasnât enough). This is why she reaches for that same old comfort blanket with whom she doesnât have to try; who will accept her ill treatment because he has committed worse against her. The one who has a PhD in her psychoses, as trained by the same man who programmed her. And since Jake is a profoundly monstrous person is the umbilical cord to her father. This is why she keeps âforgivingâ him (508), and casting him in the role of victim, as she most recently did (512), and has done ad nauseum before. Because so long as she believes Jake isnât making the choice to do the things heâs done, so long as his misdeeds are just programmatic damage, then she has someone to rescue.
âThe secret to you is that you always have to save everyoneâ (410).âIan
When she doesnât have that, she doesnât know who she is and she feels a profound loss of control due to that loss of identity anchoring. That rescuing forms the substantive basis of her identity, which Iâve written about since S4 (I know itâs tacky to quote yourself but itâs also very efficient):
âFor nearly 15 years (sheâs almost 35), Olivia created an identity for herself as âThe Protectorâ (newspaper clippings, 308). A protector depends upon objects that need protecting. If nothing and no one needs protecting, does she cease to exist as a person? Who is she outside of that superhero persona? Recall that on an African island with Jake (401), with no one to save or protect, âOlivia Popeâ ceased to be. She became âJulia Bakerâ⊠After all, for so long, indeed, it was like father like daughter. Rowan derives his whole identity from being the protector of the Republic, and Olivia was an extension of that.ââKP
The show has made it unmistakeably clear for those who did not get it in seasons 2, 3, and 4: there is no substance to Olivia and Jake. They will never be a couple. Nor is Shonda trying to sell one. They will never be a love story. Never. Be mad about it.
I hear you: but when will this end? Iâve had enough of this dysfunction! I want better for Olivia!
I want it to end and I want better for her, too. Iâve had false starts before, but I now see that Shonda needed to eliminate all of Oliviaâs excuses. She needed to try and fail at the relationship with Fitzgerald so she could see that his love canât fix her. Her love of self needs to do that. The good thing about whatâs happening now is that as Olivia is purposely deluding herself about her father (heâs the lynchpin to her formation; the man who makes chaos normal), she is also surrounded by people who are tired of her antics and have begun to see through her. They calling out her denial (Abby in 510, Mellie in 511, Huck in 512). Huck however, is best placed to call Olivia out. Not only has he suffered the most from being an adopted family member, but he has also achieved something Olivia has not: he worked at overcoming his mental trigger and he won. Of Huck in 509, I wrote:
âOliviaâs only excuse is herself. I wonder if Shonda will now allow her to seek therapy, though itâs hard to imagine. Huck managed to confront his greatest trigger: Rowan. He tested himself and he prevailed. Before that, however, he spent time working on himself after looking to others to fix him proved fruitless (501, 502). Olivia has the same trigger, and I want her to prevail.  Season 5 is the season of Olivia Pope putting love on top, and that includes love of herself. I still believe sheâll put in that work, even though sheâs hit a hurdle. Weâre only nine episodes in, so thereâs plenty of time for the confrontational work she needs to do. If Olivia does not deal with the spectre of her dysfunction, which is the legacy of her father, she will forever remain stuck in gear. Whoever she is with, she will always be there.  She cannot be happy alone, or with anyone else until she confronts herself.ââKP
The incestcapades with Jake have to stop for Olivia to begin moving on. Sheâs the only gladiator who isnât trying to move on at this point and seek some normalcy. The only one who no longer has a future in mind (âThere is no futureââ509). The dysfunction she has come to know isnât normal, itâs just familiar. Familiar and empty because sheâs certainly not happy. What the hell is the point to life if you canât be happy? The naked quest for power is not going to bring her that, and I know sheâll figure that out.
(our WhatsApp conversations in long form. LOL!)
Good point about how Olivia is the only one who isnât thinking of the future/seeking some kind of normalcy in her life. She really has given up on herself and collapsed into the Rowan-created hole as if being her fatherâs daughter is the only avenue available to her now, as if the person she tried to be before was a fictitious. Surrogate brotherâs words to her after she freed Rowan must have done a number on her.Â
And speaking of surrogate brotherâŠ.I have no further comment on that relationship other than to wish it had died in S2B, but as you said, there is a story being told here.
Hmm⊠Good point about Olivia retreating into a metaphorical âholeâ⊠I think there is a story being told here. And it probably mirrors Huckâs actual experience of being cut off from the ones he loves. A creepy, slightly gross story, but a story nonetheless. Didnât someone actually describe the hole experience (was it Huck or Jake?). That you get used to being in the hole??? And that also reminds me of Olivia describing being kidnapped. That she got used to âdirty bathroomsâ. They are definitely repeating a captivity theme, I think. She âescapedâ feeling confined and controlled by Fitz in the White House but she has completely acquiesced to her father and his patriarchy.
You make some great connections @raytwin! Â @spectaclesinscript and I have been talking about this hole Olivia has put herself intoâdark, small and familiar. Sheâs now decorated her apartment to look like a very posh cave. Youâre right about the captivity theme. Jake as representative of the dirty bathroom (421) in mental (as opposed to literal) captivity continues to be a place of retreat and defecation. Â The difference between then and now is the acquiescence, the lack of expectation for better. Thatâs why shes not sad (no popcorn), but sheâs not exactly happy. Sheâs worse than sad, sheâs without hope in her personal life.
Hereâs what Huck said about the hole and Iâve highlighted what I think the parallels are with Olivia:
âIt was always black in the hole. I know it was small⊠4'9" on the east and west walls, 6ââ north and south. I measured it every day. Itâs important to have a routine in the hole. If you donât have a routine, you go crazy. I measured the walls every day. I cleaned, I exercised, I took walks, a different country every day. You have to use your imagination. Itâs all you have. I walked through 195 countries in the hole. I liked⊠I liked being in the mountains. I liked the snow. Itâs important to have a routine. I ate lunch at the same time every day, even when I didnât have any food, even though I had no idea what time it was. I built things in the afternoon⊠a bookshelf, a desk. I watched the sunset. That was important. I listened to the birds. I cleaned up files on my computer after dinner, then I slept. I tried not to dream. And every morning after I woke up, I wrote a letter to my wife and son. And I folded the letter up, and I put it on the bookshelf. And then I measured the walls. It was a new day. It was dark, always dark. Just pitch black. It was empty. It was small. You couldnât move. You couldnât see. But I had my routine. This was my routine. This is how I would describe the hole.ââThe Testimony of  Diego Munoz (415)
Work is Oliviaâs routine (and so is fucking Jakeâutilitarian as ever). When she got out of literal captivity, she had to get back to that routine of fixing 2 days later just so she could feel like she was getting back to herselfâthe predominant identity to which she clings. In 502, when she was on the run, she went to Quinnâs to seek work so that she was not totally rudderless. I surmised on another post that moving into the WH and taking on that FLOTUS role disrupted her routine, and she started to go crazy. That crisis of identity (along with coming to terms with actions undermining her relationship, and persistent communicative retardation) put her in a tailspin that led her down a familiar path: bowing out.Â
Hereâs something else from 415 that Olivia said to Susan, that always struck me as advice Olivia needed to take:
âYou want to bow out, bow out. But do it because you truly believe youâre not the right person for this job, not because youâre afraid of failing at it. Itâs okay to be afraid. Sometimes, fear keeps us safe. Sometimes, it holds us back.ââ415
Her fear held her back this time, too. She did not leave that WH because she believed she and Fitz were wrong together. She left because she was afraid to fail at family with him. It seems to be sheâs back at square one, and this time she lacks the WH connections on which her business has prospered.Â
Lots of good and still relevant stuff in this thread from 5B
Good reminder. Olivia and Jake has never been and will never be a love story. Itâs sick and twisted.

No Sun on the Horizon & Other Things We Never Said: A Short Story (#Olitz)
Summary: An imaginary conversation that takes place the night of the Balcony scene in 422. Where 'whatever we want' means Olivia and Fitz talking to each other about the darkest places they've been to: his suicide attempt and her kidnapping. This is my version of how that might go.

*Spoiler Warning*
Lucifer has always loved Chloe. Heâs gone to Hell for her. Heâs taken bullets for her, fire for her, etc. Heâs gone out of his way to do things specifically to make her happy (think back to the prom episode). Lucifer has been in love with Chloe from the start, but he didnât say the words because Lucifer doesnât know what love means. He didnât have his Dad to use as an example, even if his Father does love him. Lucifer is used to desires, and things like greed or lust. Love is completely different, so even though he loves her, and would give up his life for her, he doesnât realize that those things are love. Thatâs what this season teaches him, and I think itâs beautiful.
Dang, this is perfect đđ»đđ»
Closetgate VS Vermontgate
I cannot pick between the two, itâs a tie !!
Itâs a tie for me, too. They are both about communicating emotions, but the tone and the goal (heh) are very different. Closetgate is frenzied, raw and intense. They are riding a tidal wave of emotion born from ten months of denied communication. This is their first opportunity to express something to one another. Vermontgate is sensual, languid, and grounded in an emotion that embraces hopefulness that was lacking in Closetgate.  Passionate denial vs. passionate hope. Ugh, I donât need to be ruined right now.Â
