Idk why everyone thinks Jack Zimmermann is a top.
JackĀ āBest ass in hockeyā Zimmermann
JackĀ āThrives on praiseā Zimmermann
JackĀ āWould literally do anything for Bittyā Zimmermann
JackĀ āJust needs to be taken care ofā Zimmermann
JackĀ āNeeds an explicit set of directions or he will overthink everything and overwhelm himselfā Zimmermann
Okay, so while I dislike Kentās ending on so, so many levels, Iām actively squicked by the implication that Jack was allowed to have anxiety and issues during his time in Juniors Hockey (which we know he did, especially in regard to living up to his dadās hockey legacy), but that Kent wasnāt, and that Kent was somehow responsible for managing Jackās anxiety/mental health.
Iāve been readingĀ Crossing the Line: Violence and Sexual Assault in Canadaās National Sport by Laura Robinson, which is a book that examines the toxic masculinity and rape culture within Juniors Hockey, where Kent and Jack were playing. It is a deeply troubled system that allows vast power disparities between coaches and players, fails to prevent extreme hazing even when thereās express bylaws against it, is ripe for giving predators continued and unhindered access to victims, and is overwhelmed by the idea that women exist to be used by men, mistreated, and then unceremoniously disposed of, and that women who try to speak out about sexual assault areĀ āattention-seeking troublemakers.āĀ
And above all, there is a prevailing attitude of homophobiaāthat not living up to traditional masculine standards and breaking from the group in any way is a betrayal of the team and hockey itself.
However, Kentās story arc ends on the conclusion that he was at fault for Jackās anxiety during this eraāhim and no one else, because he was involved with Jack and therefore should have been looking out for him. (Even though they were only hooking up a few times and not officially together. Somehow, Kent is still responsible.)
Think about that for a moment. The pressures of Junior Hockey, with all of its homophobia, misogyny, and hazing, and their effect on a queer teenager with anxiety, somehow arenāt the responsibility of the straight white men who built and maintained that culture. Itās not the fault of the coaches who turn a blind eye to hazing or seek to enable it. Itās not the fault of a system that allow flagrant homophobia to run unchecked. Itās not even the fault of Bad Bob, who knows what the Junior Hockey system is like but is never shown objecting to or even worrying about Jackās participation.
Instead, all of the blame for Jackās issues is passed onto Kent, another queer teenager who was just as helpless to stop the system they were a part of as Jack was. Check Please, for all that itās praised for fighting against toxic masculinity in sports, ultimately decided that toxic masculinity wasnāt the problemābut that a young closeted queer man was, for not being as supportive of a friend (or rather, as supportive of an occasional hookup) to Jack as he should have been.
Alllllllll of this.
Kent was a fucking teenager back then.
By Jackās version of the story, they had only hooked up a few times- nothing more.
If that is true- then why in the flying fuck is Kent solely responsible for Jackās mental state, for looking after him, for his following OD, for his downward spiral, and his fall from grace? Even if they were genuinely in love, Kent Parsonās burden here outweighās that of Atlas.
Kent was a closeted queer athlete under the exact same pressures as Jack- yet this fandom affords him virtually none of the same courtesies.
True, theyāve seen him be a jerk one time.
What about the full YEAR they saw Jack be a jerk? That he never actually apologized for? Go back and read- When he āapologizedā to Bitty, he didnāt apologize for his behavior- he said he was sorry for Bitty getting checked.
He never took responsibility for anything he did or said to Bitty⦠he pulls the equivalent of, āHey, I was a jerk to you and you still voted for me, huh?ā And Bitty tells him, āThereās no one else Iād rather have as captain.ā Jack gets a blanket pass to continue his behavior.
Jack continues to spend the next three years overriding Bittyās boundaries with expensive gifts heās explicitly uncomfortable with, sucking up his emotional and physical labor without giving much of anything in return, and continuing to hold the top leverage in a relationship whose power dynamics are wildly skewed in his favor on nearly every level.
There is so much more evidence of Jackās assholery than Kentās, and Jackās extends far beyond āone conversation at one party one timeā, yet Kent is the one demonized by both the fandom and worse, the narrative.
Instead of toxic masculinity, the villain has become a closeted queer athlete who was 17 and doing the best he could in a dangerous environment designed to break boys like them and mold them into compliance- his best happened to not be good enough to save either himself or his best friend, and his creator chose to make him a monster for it.
Shitty B. Knight appreciation post
as much as i want ollie and wicks to be considered canon, they're not. my reasoning is that if i pick the book up tomorrow and go through it, there is no indication in it that they are canon. it's dumbledore is gay all over again. same with all these other ask a wellie and blog posts. it's a lot of extra work to do as a reader for representation.
Oh for sure! I refuse to accept Ollie and Wicks as a canon couple. In the comic weāve only seen them standing next to each other and fist bumping. If any other piece of media showed this and then the creators stated that those characters were married all along, weād call this queer baiting. Ngozi doesnāt get a pass. And the extras and blog posts are definitely not canon, so I donāt know why people are accepting this as representation when it wouldāve been just as easy to confirm a relationship that actually had good development in the actual comic (well, at least in earlier years when the side characters actually got storylines and relationships).
the thing is, is that i think there is a case to be made that initially the extras and blog posts (and bittyās tweets, etc.) could have been considered canon. in the early days when it was just a webcomic, Ngozi was doing some really interesting things with non-traditional storytelling, by having the tweets and the extras as a part of the narrative. but once the tweets fell out of sync with the comic, and particularly when the comic transitioned to traditional print media when it was published, and the supplemental content wasnāt included in that publication, the canonical nature of that content became more nebulous.Ā
(add to that the fact that Ollie and Wicks were always background comedy in both the comic and the extras, the baiting aspect of them beingĀ ārepresentationā is particularly glaring. Its also interesting to me, from a narrative standpoint, that the two people on the team that Bitty is canonically shown as being the *least* close to are his year-mates, who are in a queer relationship with each other.)Ā
kent parson was easily the most interesting character in omgcp and a truthful story about a closeted nhler, who wasnāt portrayed as a villain and whose struggles as a closeted athlete werenāt used to make him a foil to another character, would have been infinitely more impactful
me, crying: some of us make what check please character are you quizzes to cope with check please ending
