Raelon is more reclusive and contemplative than Aegon, who is a free spirit and enjoys life's little pleasures. Though Raelon is pretty curious at heart so he has ventured beyond King's Landings walls often (much to Alicent's dismay whenever Aegon was involved). Raelon struggles with feelings of abandonment and jealousy as he and Aegon's relationship, which was previously inseparable as children, becomes strained as Aegon adopts a more careless and materialistic lifestyle at age 9. The fact remains to Raelon that Aegon is his and he is Aegon's in spite of this.
As twins, they have a strong relationship that transcends earthly sentiments. They are able to sense each other's emotions in ways that no one else can, perhaps akin to beloved bonds between dragons and their riders. And naturally as twins, they intrinsically feel wrapped in one another's soul as umbilical cords by ordained intervention. Their toxic relationship is marked by Raelonโs fear of losing his hold on Aegon, and Aegonโs fear of being bound. Their relationship is suffocating yet essential to them for in truth, they have a greed to be engulfed by the other though both twins realize the fullness this entails at different points in life.
Regarding dragon and rider, Raelon's blanket of security and just as much of his world is his colossal dragon, Freza the Dreadfrost. He viewed Freza as far more human than said creatures, both often attentive to the other, a bond of familial love. It would appear that Raelon and his little brother, Aemond, both had giants within the Greens family. Still, Vhagar was erratic and at times unpredictable even to Aemond. It reflected his nature, after all. Freza, while ginormous (only second to Vhagar), was sly as his rider, and rode the skies as if he were merely an eel slithering the surface of the sea.
Raelon is seen by others as an intellectual, chameleonic, slippery, a bit sassy or snarky, charming at times, even flirtatious (a misinterpretation), apart from his varied personality traits. Unlike Helaena or Aemond, he is not inherently closed off nor prefers to be! Raelon was a tad selectively mute as a kid since his ideas were seldom respected because they were typically impractical. This gives the impression that he is distant yet once he feels comfortable doing so (which comes easy), he is surprisingly communicative. Unfortunately, Raelon never properly bonded with his other siblings but he is the mummy of his siblings. Other than Aegon, he understands and has a peaceful coexistence with his aloof younger sister, Helaena. Comversely, Raelon butts heads with his poised younger brother, Aemond whether due to Aegon or simply Raelon and Aemond being oil and water. In any case, Raelon is still his big brother at the end of the day and does try not to be too hard on Aemond when they have their grievances, wishing to avoid mirroring the cold way Alicent and Otto treated him (Raelon). Raelon has a distant yet comfortable relationship with his estranged yet heart of gold younger brother, Daeron who spent most of his life in Oldtown. Still, one could say his main ties and loyalties lay with Aegon, his fraternal elder twin brother. Due to the house divide, he is rather disconnected from his elder sister, Rhaenyra (in a universe where that is not the case, he is a rat and often makes her look bad for his own enjoyment).
Raelon has no drive for power nor people's attention. He would represent an abstract kind of sloth, out of the limelight but watchful eyes. If Aegon numbs himself in materialism, Raelon numbs himself in abstract pursuit. In fact, Raelon is rather lazy despite his demeanor or clothing style which people wrongly assume him to be intelligent or competent, two things he is not (however, he is intellectual). Due not him having no lust for power nor seeking the socialite, he would most likely do well as a master of whisper as Raelon is jaggedly cunning and switches his facets ever subtly upon his company. So much so, that the chameleon emerges from its slothful, ever blending, ways. Predominance in dark impulses and false graces. No one truly knows who Raelon is aside from his twin, Aegon. And similarly, Raelon knows Aegon's essence like no other.
Despite being oblivious to his own feelings, he approaches other people's psychology with a great degree of observation and analysis. As a result, Raelon spent portions of his development years blossoming a friendship with none other than Larys Strong - another individual skilled in the art of human nature, attempting to fill a void left by Aegon's growing absence to hedonism. Alicent had deterred Raelon plenty of times, exacting one punishment after another, advising Raelon not to dwell with the wicked man (despite them requiring his aid), even blaming some of Raelon's natural tendencies actually stemming from his friendship with Larys, yet it fell on deaf ears every time.
By now, Raelon had been accustomed to Alicent's melodrama with her coldness towards him at times - him being a reminder of men she couldn't escape from (Viserys and Larys), and her disapproval and distaste of his odd bond with Aegon prior to Larys, to which she employed similar punishments and considered Raelon to be a distraction from Aegon's duties. This did leave a mark and became the inspiration behind Raelon's "paternal" (mother) facade, finding that this way he could remain in Aegon's life. He controls Aegon at times (fetching him from the brothels when Aegon is needed on the throne) while also acting as his anchor, preventing him from drifting ashore. Raelon tends to convince Aegon that he is incapable of taking care of himself by pretending that he must take care of him.
This is not to say that Raelon had only taken inspiration from Alicent's insults. Conversely, Raelon had already festered a desire to replace Alicent in Aegon's eyes when he had witnessed, after Aegon and he withdrew from one another's world, how desperate Aegon pinned for their mother's praise and approval. The way Aegon clawed at her for scraps of approval infuriated Raelon. As though he was incapable of giving Aegon the haven he craved. In response, his own controlling tendencies took shape. It caused him to feel resentment towards Alicent as Raelon did not receive nearly the same overt obsession Aegon demonstrated with their mother. Raelon's warmth which was once pure, became poisoned and laced with manipulation.
In terms of Raelon's sexuality, one would think him to be aromantic and asexual as he shows no romantic or sexual attraction to anyone. But Raelon does not consciously recognize his attraction to men, largely because his relationship with Aegon exists outside of conventional definitions. He sees it as ordained, something beyond human comprehension, something no one else would understand. This also causes turmoil within their relationship since Raelon has a habit of speaking in riddles instead of straightforwardly admitting to his attraction. For example, if others kiss, they are interested in each other and Raelon knows this. If he and Aegon kiss, they are simply reconnecting as two bodies within one soul. On top of this, while Raelon is an emotional inclined, it doesn't often translate that way as his emotions seem objective and disjointed from his person. As a result, Aegon has criticized him before for swallowing his own feelings even if Raelon may not feel it that way. Aegon's outward feelings are more primal and instinctual than Raelon's which is what causes this divide.
Like his brother, Raelon had his own vices, darker ones, that he developed as he grew bolder within his teenage years. If Aegon was a serial mawhore, Raelon was a serial killer (even by 100s A.C. standards). These activities were never physically sexual, often missing from the piece if one did not try to look closely at the metaphor's intimate nature. In fact, they were works of art and left for the inspiration behind his art to see, none other than Aegon himself by design. What can we say? Cestial Royals, am I right? Or perhaps it is merely a Greens thing! Who is to say.
