Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII is generally held up as the most extra Square Enix boss, but I think Chrono Trigger brings very stiff competition with a final boss whose battle anthem is just a remix of the game over music, and who makes you watch an unskippable two-minute cutscene of the world being destroyed every single time you lose the fight.

Chaos: makes everyone relive the same 600 years so he can avoid dying

Zeromus: says he’ll never die as long as hate exists

Kefka: has his own cult and a tower and a contrapuntal organ solo

Ultimecia: wants to flatten time, has a castle with a wine cellar but no face

Exdeath: literally a tree

It’s like the game understands me

I don’t know exactly when or how I developed this impression, but something about contextless FFX footage that I probably experienced at a concert or while scrolling through Tumblr led me to believe that Auron was actually a primary, or the primary, antagonist. So in the beginning, when he was fighting alongside Tidus before he got swept off to Spira, I was feeling kind of smug since I had an inkling of the twist that I was sure was coming.

Throughout the rest of the playthrough I kept thinking “he’s so crotchety and I want to love him but I know the twist is coming.”

As the game wore on I thought “they’re really going to pull this twist out at the last minute, aren’t they?”

And then at the very end I was like “I’M SORRY I DOUBTED YOU, YOU MAGNIFICENT WARRIOR MONK.”

On finishing an eighth Final Fantasy

It’s OK to fall behind on games. You don’t owe an ‘up-to-date’ status to anyone, including yourself. When you’ve nonetheless felt ‘behind’ for years, though, it’s still something to take a step back and realize that you eventually worked your way through more than half of the mainline series—something that seemed insurmountable to me a decade ago because games were scattered across systems.

I’ll never finish them all. Online multiplayer games aren’t my jam, I’ve been reliably told there are better uses for my time than XIII, and as much as I keep saying I’m going to do it because I’m a stubborn completionist, the thought of facing II’s battle system again is not appetizing. The VII remake was totally unnecessary. I don’t care about the compilation. I’m not terribly interested in The After Years or X-2.

But IV-X, plus I, is a pretty nice batch to have worked through.

When you're on Besaid for the first time, Wakka says that he started playing for the Aurochs when he was thirteen, and follows that up by stating that this was ten years ago. This establishes that Wakka is 23 during the story of FFX.

Before the group enters Zanarkand, Wakka, Tidus and Auron has a brief conversation where Wakka remarks that even legendary guardians can loose their nerve. Auron retorts by saying "Legendary? I was just a boy. About your age in fact."

It's clearly established that Auron's journey with Braska occured 10 years ago.
