what if star trek au
Ilya is 3/4 klingon and 1/4 vulcan (dad klingon and mother 1/2 klingon 1/2 vulcan)
Shane is 5/6 human and 1/6 vulcan (dad human and mother 1/3 vulcan 2/3 human) -> or maybe perhaps I should add more fun in his bloodline, idk
Ilya is made to follow his dad's strict klingon upbringing and beliefs but his mother had taught him a lot of vulcan sensibilities and mostly emotional control and Ilya is definitely suffering because he doesn't super feel all that klingon??
Shane meanwhile has been enjoying a lot of vulcan mindfullness with a dash of human silliness who feels rather at peace being part vulcan, he kinda feels more vulcan than human, in contrast to his mother who was the family rebel and was very uncouthly human while growing up, meaning that Yuna does worry about Shane not fitting in well with his predominantly human peers
I had a thought that maybe they end up sharing an apartment on a large ship as they travel to the academy or smt, meaning Ilya gets to learn a bunch more about vulcan habits etc. from Shane and Yuna and having the human balance allows him to come more to terms with his klingon side and the parts he does identify with even if they seem opposite of his vulcan side sometimes. Ilya has no idea that he was immediately clocked as part vulcan by Yuna and as decidedly un-klingon-like by Shane and David. Shane is still aggressively horny over Ilya and feels continuously flustered in his presence, resulting in him frequently hiding in his room to meditate. This is equally clocked by Yuna who is incredibly factual about sexual attraction and kind of forgets about the emotional aspect of it. She notices the moment things change between Shane and Ilya and immediately points it out through well-meaning advice and tips for hiding their dalliances better while at the academy. Shane is mortified and Ilya is amused by Shane's reaction, in awe by Yuna's easy acceptance and support, but kind of also a little bit embarrassed about having been caught immediately.
idk Ilya leaves after and they probably get separated for years or smt and then meet again with Ilya captaining a klingon ship and Shane a starfleet ship or smt and then the "rivalry" thing starts or whatever
I do not have the spoons to write this or think deeper about it, nor do I have the time to look into the details of klingon and vulcan culture which is SAD, but hey, here y'all have my shower thoughts
I would like to add that everyone kinda always goes like "Ah, Shane is so awkward in this wonderfully Vulcan way! We love Shane The Vulcan." and Ilya has to stand there, being called "Typical Klingon" and just take it because technically it's a secret that he's part Vulcan (his father demands it) but like, he's more Vulcan than Shane
Shane is just also autistic, but woefully unaware of this himself
during their time at the academy or whatever, they definitely are in different tracks and buildings, never naturally crossing the other's path except for during school wide events during which they secretly hook up
they graduate and go their separate ways, Ilya joining his father's strict crew to slowly get promoted to captain his own small vessel while their faction starts showing more and more rebellion against starfleet behind the scenes. this is when Ilya is able to run into Shane again.
Shane goes through a fast track in starfleet and ends up being an amazing tactician (please bear with me if I use the incorrect terms, it has been a hot second since I've had star trek brain) and then ends up being the youngest person on the bridge and then captain right around when Ilya becomes captain.
Shane now captains an exploration vessel and takes his diplomatic job very seriously and therefore when they run into Ilya's vessel, Shane insists on inviting Ilya on board for a good boy diplomatic talk. Obviously they end up fucking, but their interactions in public display a deep dislike for each other and people assume they hate each other. This then keeps happening for a couple of years.
Then Ilya's vessel gets in trouble and Shane immediately recognises the distress signal. At this point starfleet is aware the faction (under Grigory's rule) is going rogue and starfleet personnel wants them gone. Shane making the clear choice to rescue them and then imprison them to try and pursued them onto Starfleet's side is met with extreme scepticism, but nothing Shane says is wrong. They aren't a war vessel, they're not supposed to destroy other vessels requesting help, even if they are suspicious.
The crew then gets to see a different side of Ilya, who is lowering the klingon brusqueness and leaning more into his vulcan mindfullness (thank you Yuna) which confuses everyone and they assume it's a trick of some sort, but Shane is persistent. Svetlana and Sasha were also rescued, but Sasha refuses to comply and is therefore sent off to a strict political prison thing whatever. Svetlana needs more time to come around than Ilya, but she's obedient enough to be let off easy once they make it back to base. Yuna and David greeting Ilya with warmth is when the crew goes quiet and realises that there is more going on here. Shane explains that Ilya has fully betrayed his father and told him and other higher ups at starfleet exactly what was going on and their plans to host several attacks to starfleet.
and then Ilya probably joins the crew and then another couple years later they get caught being intimate and they get officially together with all the bureaucratic drama that entails.
or smt
idk there is probably some shenanigans at some point with scott hunter being an official of some sort in starfleet and making it easier somehow for them to get on a ship together, maybe something about the subtle but rampant racism still in starfleet behind the scenes or whatever against klingon and their preference for vulcans, yada yada, I need to do more research for that to make sense
