the "biblically accurate angel" trend is such a perfect encapsulation of a pet peeve i have which is everybody wants to criticize the bible but nobody wants to read the bible. like when people were drawing crazy amalgamations of eyes and wheels talking to mary and saying "be not afraid" and everybody was like omfggg OF COURSE she was scared. like no actually the angel looked like a guy can you read 3 lines of text... they were saying be not afraid because it's scary when a random man suddenly shows up in your house and starts talking to you

another fun thing about people from work knowing me by my last name is since film/TV set work is so volatile and borderline abusive at times you do build these really intense relationships with people and I have had people I care about switch to my first name in emotionally charged moments which is a great trope and it hits even crazier in real life

#first name rights can be earned and most emotionally aware people know when they’re there #even then it’s usually incidental #the only person from work to switch to my first name full time is my bf and he said it wasn’t easy lol #categorically different than the guy who tried to first name me after we had maybe two conversations and I caught him looking down my shirt #myposts.com

So currently I answer to my full first name (which I usually introduce myself with) as well as two nicknames/diminutives plus my last name when people mistake it for a first name. There are two or three other nicknames I've also gone by in the past. I'm perfectly fine with this, or neutral at minimum-- I have a common name and have had to be flexible with how I'm distinguished for my whole life. I also don't feel a deep and fundamental connection of my name with my identity, though I think going by another name entirely would confuse me.

A number of friends have been appalled at me being called names I don't say are my name. Which is really weird to me, although I'd go to battle for anyone else who was getting either deadnamed or called something they didn't want. But this perspective seems surprisingly common!

How do you feel about being called something other than the name you introduce yourself with?

I think it's fun if people give me (non-derogatory) nicknames or shorten my name

I don't care if people call me something else and will answer to it

I'm mildly uncomfortable or annoyed but won't make an issue of it

#in civilian life I love it #but I go exclusively by my last name at work and am pretty strict about it #I have a very common name and there’s always someone else on set with it so I respond quicker to just my last name #it makes things much less confusing plus I love going by my last name it’s got a certain Masc Italian Swagger™️ to it #which I’m always going for #and I will gladly accept nickname variations on it that’s great!#but I’ve had people at work use my first name as a way of trying to get overly familiar with me #and I shut that shit down if you don’t have preexisting first name privileges I will ignore you until you pivot #I’ve also had people use my first name in a sort of ‘only men go by their last name’ way #which I’m not crazy about if you can believe it #so I’m bald #people with first name privileges can basically call me whatever they want and I’ll clap like a seal
