psa: if you’re a broke millennial who wants to do something small to help out struggling minorities right now, eat at a local chinese restaurant next time you go out. i just went to a lunch buffet, and the lady who runs it was so appreciative we were there because apparently business has been extremely slow for a lot of chinese places since the coronavirus outbreak. people are actually afraid of catching the virus from immigrants who haven’t been to china in years/decades, and it’s starting to have a negative impact on their livelihoods now that we’re a month into the panic.
Honestly just knowing what that blanket says in full feels like accidental symbolism in the movie

Gosh it would be a shame if this got reblogged.
THIS IS ACTUALLY FACTUAL AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED MORE

“Knowing that they were losing “valuable product” due to their slaves’ propensity to swim, slave owners began taking drastic steps to protect their property. One of these steps was to instill a fear of the water by dunking disobedient slaves in water until they nearly drowned and by creating fear through stories of creatures living in the water. Thus it didn’t take long to excise or destroy the West African swimming tradition from African- American culture. The Jim Crow laws that were enacted after The Civil War prohibited blacks from the popular seaside resorts in places like Atlantic City, N.J. and Revere Beach, Mass. And by the 20th Century, as the swimming pool began to gain in popularity in the United States, the color line prohibited blacks from enjoying this pleasant recreational skill.
In addition, self-segregation also played a role in limiting those of African ancestry from getting in the water. I remember my Aunt saying to stay away from the pool because, “black folk don’t swim.””
Such a long and consistent history of anti-Blackness and swimming. Long before police openly assaulted little black girls in McKinney, GoodWhitePeople™ were enforcing White Supremacy and segregating swimming pools.
Motel manager, James “Jimmy” Brock, pouring acid into a swimming pool to drive black people away from a “Swim In” protest, in St. Augustine, Florida on June 18, 1964.
Next time you hear someone ask questions like, “Why don’t black people swim?” Or “Why are so many black people afraid of dogs?” And, “Why are there do so many black people live in poverty?”…..let ‘em know that those aren’t coincidences. These things didn’t just happen naturally, all on their own. There’s a reason for it, and you don’t have to be an historian to know they’re all interconnected through slavery, endemic racism and persistently racist cultural norms.

This judge had exactly the right reaction to the shameful way nonviolent prisoners are treated in US jails
A woman was denied pants or tampons after being arrested for not completing a diversion course that was part of her sentencing from a shoplifting charge. But see how the judge reacts when she finds out that the prisoner’s humiliating treatment is apparently routine.

WATCH THE VIDEO
This is why it’s so important to vote for your local judges after doing a minimal amount of research. Most people just pick whatever judge is there or has a funny name, but this woman is changing the way prisoners are treated and she was voted in by the county. Always do your research before voting for judges, but don’t discount it as unomportant. You may need someone like her on your side one day.
Another point: when Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon came out a lot of people saw it in theaters. The movie is entirely in Chinese and was subtitled. I don’t remember anyone complaining about it. I remember being so immersed in the movie that I thought they were speaking English.
More subtitles and captions in movie theaters 2k20.
True. I just saw Parasite. All subtitles. No complaints.
Ok you try keeping up with a movie in a language you don’t understand and tell me how that worked out for you. I get the point you’re trying to make that we should have subtitles for people who are deaf but what if the theater has zero deaf people in it? We then have subs going for no reason and shouldn’t deaf people already know wtf is going on in a quiet place if they’re using sign language why tf would they need subsas well? Isn’t that the equivalent of them having subs while the person is speaking clear English? 😂
Ok but what’s wrong with subs in that situation or at all?
Pros for subs:
Everyone can understand
You can read those quiet ass parts in the movie when you can’t hear em for shit
You can read those loud ass parts in the movie where you can’t understand shit
If there’s any accents or different dialects you can still understand
Cons for subs:
You could possibly call the very small portion at the bottom of the screen used for the writing a con on lost visual but letters are on clear backgrounds so you can see the movie behind, and if you’re gonna complain about >1% of screen space I have nothing else to say to you
also newsflash asshole: deaf people dont go to the theater BECAUSE theres no subtitles you fuckin jackass, not bc they cant hear.
also a quite place isn’t easy to understand even without the subtitles bc the sign language is often obscured in the movie. asl is done face to face, if someone is signing but u cant see their face you cant understand what theyre saying. i know asl and i still had to read the subtitles bc its like someone is talkin real quiet even if the volume is turned all the way up. normalize subtitles.
not to mention people with auditory processing issues. i hear just fine but my brain lags worse than a virus riddled laptop so i can’t understand shit no matter how loud it is. subtitles fill in the gaps and make the movie easier to understand.
also, The Shape of Water did really well showing that a character with a hearing issue can be a main character and it works. The movie didn’t suffer because Elisa was mute - it made the audience think a bit harder, sure, but it worked fine.
Not all deaf people know asl, fyi.
So y'all can binge watch your favorite anime in a week and make mile long gifsets of your favorite shows on Tumblr, but draw the line at subtitled movies? What a joke! Just say that you’re ableist and move on.
Falum/anniethebisexual/the scam artist and liar who has conned a ton of us is back at it again.
I know it's great when celebrities talk about important issues, politics and climate change and they should still do it to open eyes and inspire people about the things in this world but can we stop making them the number one go-to source? when we always point the fingers on them to speak up we teach younger generations that they should just simply follow what their favorite celebrity says and does, can we maybe teach them to get informed and educated about issues and develop a knowledge for what is good and what is bad by watching and reading news from different platforms and sources and look things up. Celebs speaking up is important and don't get me wrong, I don't want them to stop because they reach a huge number of people but if we make catastrophes about "who posted and who didn't and who donated how much money" instead of "what is happening and why is it happening and how can I help" then what are we teaching younger generations?
Heard some important information on Twitter today, and thought I’d post it here for anyone who may not have heard it. This is actually a thing, devised by human rights organisation called Karma Nirvana.

Hi, friends. I know there are a lot of hard feelings going on about troops being deployed to Iran. Please try to remember that service members are not the government. They aren’t making this call. You can disagree with everything that is happening and still have compassion. I know that’s hard to do, especially when you have strong feelings about foreign conflicts (and believe me— I do, too), but they didn’t make the decision that the government has made. I live next to a military base and I don’t even want to ask any of my close friends if they’re going back overseas because they’re so eager to get out of the military and so close to it... I almost just don’t want to know.
Mental Crop Rotation
When farmers grow the same crop too many years in a row, it can leave their soil depleted of minerals and other nutrients that are vital to the health of their fields.
To avoid this, farmers will often alternate the crops that they grow because some plants will use up different minerals (such as nitrogen) while other plants replenish those minerals. This process is known as “crop rotation.”
So the next time you find that you need to step away from a project to work on something else for a while, don’t beat yourself up for “quitting” that project. Give yourself permission to practice “mental crop rotation” to maintain a healthy brain field.
Because I’ve found that when that unnecessary guilt and pressure are removed from the process, a good mental crop rotation can help you feel more energized and invigorated than ever once you’re ready to rotate back to that project.
: A crucial part of crop rotation is that the field is let fallow sometimes. You plant what’s called a “cover crop”, which is something you don’t expect to harvest– it’s there for its roots to hold the soil in place, and often it’ll be what’s called a nitrogen-fixer, i.e. a plant that can pull nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil with its roots (but sometimes it won’t, sometimes it’s really just there to shelter the soil surface), and then you’ll till in that cover crop, or let the frost kill it and the stalks lie as mulch, and then you’ll rotate productive crops back into that field the next season.
It’s important, though, to understand that during the fallow period, no nutrients are removed from that ground, and nothing is expected of it. Whatever the land grows then, it keeps, and it gets tilled back in or decomposes in place, to return its energy to the earth.
We’re not allowed, in our current society, to just let our minds be fallow for a bit, to produce nothing for export, to make nothing that can be sold. But it’s part of good land stewardship, to give every field time when it doesn’t need to give you anything back.
So yes, grow and produce different things from time to time, rotate them around your mind and exercise different mental muscles, take different things from your creative processes, yes– but also, give yourself a fallow spell now and again, and let the field of your mind grow things for itself to keep, to break down and save for later.
Positive mental health AND agriculture??!?

we are already living in the cyberpunk future and i know this because within a span of 3 days we went from this tweet:
to thousands of people making phony images and replying to them with their passionate desire to have them as a tshirt to overload the bots with nonsense and junk and send out warnings to shoppers like this:
and now we even have people replying to pictures of baby yoda with “i want this on a tshirt” knowing how ravenous disney is being with copyright in hopes to get the stores taken down altogether
i dont know what it is about stuff like this and the whole turn mei into a symbol of hk protesters thing but, its really reassuring for some reason
And the next step…

it was in awe lmao
then the hygienist and assistant all came over to look too and they were like “wooooow” and my ass was sitting there like
oh my god i posted this and then went to work, and
story time
okay so to preface this, my hometown where i’m originally from is a really fucking weird place. like from the outside it seems like a normal suburban town, but once you’re there for awhile you get the feeling that’s something’s not…quite all together. a lot of people are really fucking weird there — so much so that that was a running joke in school growing up, that people in the town were just like that. everyone knew not to go out to the farm lands surrounding the town especially at night, we called it “the cuts” and people used to disappear out there all the time or get shot at by the especially weird people that would live out there. the news was and still is truly a thing of horror. every time i come back i’m regaled with even more stories of crazy shit that has happened there.
to put it in perspective we generally never had “normal crime” like robbery or anything like that when i lived there, though that did happen sometimes. the news stories were always like, “a kid was kidnapped by local residents and tortured in a house around the corner,” “a random person was chased down and shot for sport in a really nice neighborhood,” “someone was gored to death by a bull while out car shopping,” etc. (these are all real, btw). everyone does drugs and the whole town is located really close to a government site where they test nuclear weapons and chemicals and shit. this is how i grew up, in this bizarre environment.
i need to preface it this way so that you get that it’s weird. it’s a fucking weird place. i used to listen to the welcome to night vale podcast and make comparisons from it to my hometown, that’s how weird it is.
i only say this so you know that this town is where i got my orthodontics from.
all the kids in my town went to this one particular orthodontist. i also used to go to a dentist in town that a lot of people went to as well. i had a permanent retainer put on my bottom teeth after braces and no one had ever said anything to me about the model of retainer itself or it being weird type of retainer at all. i saw a ton of other people (mostly other kids that were my age at the time) that had the same type of retainer as me too so i never thought about it.
so i kept my retainer in — it’s never caused me problems and it keeps my teeth straight, why not?
however i went to a dentist for the first time in a metropolitan area now, and when he saw it in my mouth his literal first reaction was to say “uh can i ask you a question….what the hell is that”
LITERALLY the words that he said
which in hindsight makes almost too much sense. of course my town of all towns would put these weird unnecessary contraptions in kids’ mouths, and of course it happened so much that everyone just thought it was normal. that sounds exactly, to a T, like my hometown.
my permanent bottom retainer is apparently this prototype that is so rare that he’s literally never seen it before in his life, not in dental school, nowhere. it’s not that it’s an outdated type, it’s just rare as fuck. they were still staring at pictures of it on my chart in wonder when i left the office.
so just know somewhere out there, in a weird ass suburban town where they test nuclear weapons and a good portion of the residents go fucking nuts, there’s probably hundreds of people still walking around with this same contraption in their mouth that exists nowhere else in the world thinking, “yeah, that’s cool. that makes sense. let me go drink the definitely not-contaminated water now and never move away from here.”
This sounds like an X-files episode
Okay, so I looked into it and I think that the town is Tracy, California.
I looked up the bull-murder thing OP mentioned and Tracy seemed to be only town that came up with a matching case. Though the man didn’t actually die from his injuries everything else matches up one for one. So just to make sure that it was the right town I looked to see if there was any murder-torture of young people in Tracy, and unfortunately there was. It was a 17 year old boy who escaped and survived the torture. And just to solidify that it was in fact Tracy I looked up shootings in residential areas and there was one of a 20 year old man who was shot and killed in a nice neighborhood.
Okay, but I decided to look into Tracy more to find out more information about it and the town is super suspicious. There’s been a lot of murders and shooting in the town. Back in 2009 an 8 year old girl, Sandra Cantu, was kidnapped and murdered by a Sunday school teacher who said she had no idea why she killed Sandra. Another case happened in 2018 when four underage boys were shot and one was killed by four teenage boys. There’s a lot of news stories on shootings, homicides, and drug busts in that town. It’s a really cute town from the outside, if you just look up Tracy, California there’s a lot of really cute businesses and nice articles on sweet things that happen in the town, but if you actually look into it the town is really sketchy.
So yeah, this sketchy town with a military base, multiple homicides and shootings is maybe Tracy, California.
………………..yeah, you guys caught me
i grew up in tracy
also i have to add another person’s tags to this since it’s honesty hour because they’re hilarious and true
Honestly I wasn’t even surprised when I found out it was in California. Even less surprised when googled it and found out it was near the Bay Area. That sounds about right.
Apparently the motto is “Think Inside the Triangle” and I’m not sure how to feel about that.
Im rebolgging just to add that it’s illegal to see the news from the city in UE. Like, LITERALLY:
it’s….what now
Please get out of this place
How did this post get weirder
