When people treat accessibility like a luxury for disabled people when itâs actually a legal right đ
yknow when you wear a big hoodie and let the sleeves fall way past your hands and then you flap your handsâŠthatâs good fun
remember when people listed privileges in their bio and âconventionally attractiveâ was sometimes in the privilege list? that was such a flex
Changing my bio one moment
hm so psa bc i didnât know this, itâs not common knowledge, and flu season is around:
apparently you arenât supposed to take dextromethorphan (a common cough suppressant. itâs in stuff like cough syrup, mucinex dm, tylenol severe cold) with sertraline (aka zoloft, the antidepressant) bc it has the risk of causing Serotonin Syndrome, which is not as fun as the name suggests. iâm not a doctor but like, avoid drug interactions bc they can be serious.
remember to read labels guys aaa
Not just sertraline, any SSRI or SNRI. Serotonin syndrome can kill you. When I was younger and on a lot of medication, a dose of cough medicine landed me in the ER. Always check potential interactions here before taking anything with antidepressants, even if itâs over-the-counter.
âWhat if people treated physically ill people like they treated mentally ill people-â THEY DO. Physically ill and disabled people have to listen to every dismissive, invalidating, ableist thing abled people tell mentally ill people. This idea that everyone have endless patience, compassion and understanding when it comes to physically ill and disabled people is a myth - and if you spent any amount of time actually listening to physically ill and disabled peopleâs experiences youâd know that. If you find yourself thinking things like âno one would ever tell someone in a wheelchair that their illness wasnât realâ or âno one would ever tell someone with chronic pain that they didnât need their medsâ then youâre vastly under-estimating abled peopleâs ability to be ableist assholes and itâs about time that you include listening to physically disabled people in your activism.
The idea that physically disabled people are treated better than other disabled people is a myth abled people have foisted on us because we are easier to fuck around with when we aren't united.
Fuck that.
As someone who is mentally ill, visibly physically disabled, and autistic, we ALL get tret like shit. Don't let them split us up.
Sleepy all the time? You might have a sleep disorder.
I know Rare Disease Day is for illnesses people donât know much about, but sleep disorders can often be misunderstood even if the names are well-known.
I have a sleep disorder called narcolepsy, also known as âexcessive uncontrollable daytime sleepiness.â And thatâs basically what it is. Youâre extremely sleepy during the day, and you canât really control it by how much you sleep.
Important: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FALL ASLEEP DURING ACTIVITIES TO HAVE NARCOLEPSY. One book actually said this rarely occurs in people with narcolepsy. You need to have a sleep study to be properly diagnosed, but here are some defining symptoms (these can go along with a lot of sleep disorders).
Main symptoms (everyone experiences narcolepsy differently, so not everyone has every one of these symptoms):
-excessive daytime sleepiness (again, you do not have to fall asleep during activities)
-cataplexy. this basically means you experience muscle weakness during strong emotions. you could be shocked, crying, laughing, etc. it can affect any or all muscles. some people may collapse (this mostly happens for me during shock or laughter).Â
-nightmares, especially realistic ones.
-sleep paralysis. this occurs during asleep to awake/awake to sleep transitions. when someone gets sleep paralysis, they are unable to move for often a few seconds to a few minutes.
-hypnogogic hallucinations. these are described as dream-like experiences that occur when someone is awake. they often take place during awake to sleep/sleep to awake transitions and can go along with sleep paralysis.
(Keep in mind we all have different symptoms. Daytime sleepiness is the main symptom shared by narcoleptics.)
Other/correlating symptoms:
-depression.
-disassociation
-issues with alertness and concentration.
-dreaming instantly after falling asleep
I could be missing other symptoms, but those are some main ones. If youâre extremely sleepy during the day for no known reason, that isnât supposed to be ânormal,â and you might want to get a sleep study. It might help you rule out a number of sleep disorders. Plus, if you have diagnosis, you can get treatment, which might make life much easier.Â
Narcolepsy is known as a neurological disorder. Basically, narcoleptic brains donât know how to regulate sleep. This leads us to enter REM (rapid eye movement) sleep soon after we fall asleep when weâre supposed to enter it much later in the sleep cycle. For those who donât know, the REM sleep period is when most dreaming occurs. The brain also seems to crave REM sleep, leaving us on the verge of REM throughout the day.Â
it's 2022. donald trump has died in disgrace days after being impeached and jailed. my chemical romance's new album is coming out the same day as the new spiderverse movie. the lizzo and janelle monaé collab song is blowing up the radio. lil nas x has a verse in it. you and your partner have time and energy for dates after work after jeff bezos' assets have been seized and distributed to the public in the wake of his arrest for keeping employees in unsafe working conditions.
oh what a life

dyadic/perisex LGBTQ people, if youâve ever used intersex conditions as proof that thereâs more then two genders, I challenge you to think about whether youâve ever talked about intersex issues on a separate occasion. I challenge you to think about whether youâve boosted intersex voices talking about our experiences. I challenge you to think about if youâve ever evaluated the language you use in your life to see if itâs intersex inclusive. I challenge you to think about whether youâve ever donated to intersex organizations, or signed petitions to support intersex causes.
if youâre going to use intersex conditions to make what is a valid point but then never think about intersex people outside of it, consider what youâre saying to the intersex people in your community with your actions, and evaluate your contribution to the reasons many of us feel alienated from the community. Make an active choice to promote intersex activism instead of only using us when itâs convenient.
welcome to no gender november
