Suppose that Stratt needs to set up a robust form of group communication so that, say, ministers of science for multiple countries can all stay in contact and up to date with whatever Project Hail Mary developments Stratt deigns to give them. Direct quote from the book: "Stratt loves well-tested, off-the-shelf products". So, let's say she steals the code for Discord, has experts clone and modify it to heighten the security, and essentially creates her own ultra-secure Discord for this purpose.
Stratt does not have the time, energy, patience, inclination, or temperament to moderate the server, of course. That gets kicked down the chain to Dr. Grace, who once got tricked by his students into joining a Discord server to help plan a surprise birthday party for another teacher. And then emotionally blackmailed into STAYING in the server until the party, instead of leaving immediately like a responsible teacher who does not hang out with his young students online in his spare time like a creeper. And THEN pulled off the INCREDIBLY impressive feat of corralling a class's worth of kids loose in a Discord where everyone except him had admin privileges. (Years after the fact, he can admit that this combination of 30+ kids with admin privileges & one lone adult teacher without them was kind of a hilarious setup.)
Grace loosely copies the channel structure of that old Discord for the science ministers' Discord without thinking too hard about it. It sure is a lot easier for him to just use his own admin privileges to create a "🔊time-out" voice channel directly, instead of begging and wheedling a group of young teenagers into both making it and using it responsibly! He did hesitate for a second about making the #memes channel, but then that was literally the first channel after #general that got posted in, so...
Grace hates to admit it, but riding herd on a group of little shit teenagers, with mostly very little life experience, kind of did prepare him quite well for riding herd on a group of bigger shit politicians with varying levels of scientific experience.
Stratt herself has a username in Discord 2: Discord Harder, but she almost never uses it. Grace mildly abuses his admin powers to create a hidden channel that everyone but Stratt can see and post in, named #class-de-strattification, where Grace re-posts Stratt's rare announcements in the server (because, for some reason, Stratt never makes them pinned posts in the #general channel; she just throws them into a random text channel and then leaves??), and gives the politicians lessons in how to "translate" them from Stratt's curt communications style into something that might play a little better with their constituents and colleagues.
The emoji in Grace's customized all-powerful admin role is a little fox.
