āAnd remember: the sky is the limit! You can be anything you want to be!ā
āThank you. I want to be a secretary.ā
That stopped them short. āWhat?ā
āA secretary,ā she repeated.
āButā¦ā they trailed off, dumbfounded. āWhy? You could be a CEO, a scientist, a lawāā
āI donāt want to be a CEO,ā she said. āI want to be a secretary.ā
They scoffed. āYou want to answer phones all day?ā
She smiled. āYes.ā
āSchedule appointments?ā
āI like organizing.ā
āBe a second banana?ā
An affirmative nod. āIām skilled at helping.ā
āI just donāt understand,ā they said. āHOW could you be okay with all of this?!ā
āI enjoy the work.ā
āBUT YOU CAN BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE!ā
āI know.ā
āThen WHY?!ā
She shrugged.
āBecause I want to be a secretary.ā
Honestly though, this is very similar to my momās experience. Sheās always been super bright, but has realized as sheās gotten older that intellectual pursuits just arenāt her jam. She dropped out of her PhD program to have kids, and although she has her masterās and was a pretty good school psychologist, she hated having to make huge decisions. Sheās a church secretary now and loves it, and sheās GOOD at it; sheās letting her school psych certification permanently expire this year with zero regrets. If you can be anything you want, that includes the things we donāt tend to value as highly as a society. Not everybody is built for or wants the ārespectableā careers.
My grandma did this to me, saying that i didnāt want to get stuck on the outside, making coffee and filing papers. The thing is, thatās exactly what Iāve always enjoyed the most, making and organizing things. That would be enough for me.
Nobody seems to realize that if you tell people they can be anything they want to be they will. And not everyone WANTS to be doctors or lawyers or CEOs or scientists. Sometimes, they just want to be a secretary.
it took me a LOT of therapy before i was able to shrug off the effects of the Gifted Child Upbringing enough to realize that what i really wanted to be was a house husband and Local Queerdad who writes novels sometimes. god, iām so much happier now.
aināt nothing wrong with an ordinary life. donāt let anybody tell you you have to be the top dog to be worth anything.
As a secretary for a therapy centerāoutside of like shitty people in and out of the office, the jobs lit af and you get to look as cute or as Un-cute as you want everyday and itās totes fine ALSO FREE STATIONARY!!?!?!
Truly the dream.
I agree with all of this and I also feel like the extreme competition for most ārespectableā jobs is manufactured by having such a two-tier economy that people are desperate for the financial freedom only a few jobs truly allow.
If someone actually enjoys retail (my mother) and you need retail people why does a retail worker have to be punished with starvation wages?
Also when a minimum wage job goes up to a living wage and someone I work with goes āhaha thatās how much I make now I should go work for Dominosā I always just say if thatās what you want to do then you should! You must be so excited that you can! But they just shake their head or admit theyād hate that job. Because when they say that they donāt mean āI should work there and would if I could afford to!ā They mean āthat job and those people are below me and shouldnāt make my wage.ā
In conclusion the entire idea of respectable jobs is bullshit. Do exactly what you want and fight to get what you deserve from it and donāt let anyone tell you you should do anything else.
Normalize doing common, necessary things well. Normalize respecting people who do good work. Appreciate indoor plumbing and functioning electricity and a really good pizza. Appreciate phlebotomists who are good at getting a good sample on the first try.
At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
I finally made the meme I've had in my head for over a year
āgreatā britain? actually I find it quite mid
happy 10k notes to this post! shoutout to all the brits reblogging it saying itās actually quite awful and to everyone saying āāunitedā states of america? Actually I find them quite dividedā
Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism šš¾ you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.
Yes, nonblack people can reblog. I'd appreciate it, in fact, if y'all took the time to vocally support your Black friends/fans in fandom.

Renfield.
This assumes a single fly weighs 8g, which is the weight of a 1-2 week old mouse (!). If you are unfamiliar with metrics: 100g is a bit less a quarter of a pound.
Btw, Wikipedia says a single house fly weighs in the range of 0.2 grams, so Google has discovered a world where flies are about 40x bigger
if you've never engaged with a creative art on a regular basis you need to understand that it requires concerted effort to get into "the groove" to make something and every second that it takes to get into that groove causes physical pain, but the only thing worse than doing it is not doing it.
in the club freakin it in a sensitive style
