BIOGRAPHY

The baby of the family. That is how many perceive Narcissa Black. The one that needs to be protected because she's the youngest. Because she looks so innocent in comparison to her sisters. The princess of the family. The quiet one.

Being born into the Black family brought along a lot of pressure and attention to her. From day one, the same thing was drilled into her: it is your job to produce an heir to an important Pureblood family. And that was it. She was there to look after her husband, to be a mother and nothing else. And she followed those rules without complaint. At least in the beginning.

Being the daughter of Druella and Cygnus Black was a role full of pressure. Her eldest sister Bellatrix was someone completely different than Narcissa. And also probably an example of what her parents not expected of their youngest daughter. Where Bellatrix was the outgoing one, the next ladies were expected to follow the rules. And Narcissa took it to heart. Throughout her years of youth and at Hogwarts, she played along with the plans her parents made. Disappointment was not a word in her dictionary.

However, during her last years at Hogwarts, her faith in her parents took a hit. A marriage was arranged between the Black and Malfoy family. The young man was year above her at Hogwarts and she knew him from the many social events. And Narcissa had her opinion about him ready; he was an annoyance. An arrogant one. A kid. How on earth could their parents think this was going to be a good match. But the young woman still went through it all (not that she had a choice) and a few days after her 20th birthday, she became the wife of Lucius Malfoy.

The next hit around the same time she learned about her betrothal, was the fact that Andromeda left. She had not even left Hogwarts yet, but her sister was gone. Yes, Bellatrix was still her big sister but with the smaller age difference with Andromeda, she had always been closer to her. The person she trusted with her whole life, was suddenly gone. All because opinions differed. And it shook something awake in Narcissa. Although she will never say it out loud.

Despite the fact that she got married to Lucius, behind closed doors the two of them got into a few fights for sure. They were children, not the young adults full of responsibility that their parents expected them to be. They were more enemies than lovers and neither of them felt a lot for doing what was expected; becoming the parents to the Malfoy heir.

First the loss of her sister, then the news that a little baby was born and the war, made Narcissa change her perspective on her marriage. People could disappear on her any moment and she was to be expected to share her life with this man. Why were they fighting, while the entire time they agreed on the same subject; they were not ready to be parents yet. Yes, they were not children anymore but ready for parenthood: definitely not. Fights turned into talks and the talks turned into friendship. Mutual respect between the two of them grew and Narcissa found a new confidant in her husband.

The woman fills her days with organising events - preferably ones connected to a good cause or charity. Narcissa doesn't like throwing away money for nothing, despite the fact that she easily can. Next to that she also avoids her parents so she can avoid the question about "When is the Malfoy heir here? Are you with child yet?" And she spends her days in the company of her husband, her best friend and the person she starts to appreciate more and more. She knows that one day she will want to be a mother, but she wants it to be on their terms.

Ludo’s expression brightened the moment he spotted Narcissa approaching, the sort of practiced smile that came as naturally to him as breathing. “Darling,” he greeted her warmly, lifting his glass in acknowledgment. “And here I was beginning to think this evening had completely lost its appeal.”

At her question, his smile lingered for a second too long before he let out a short laugh. “I did, unfortunately. Whoever is behind this little game seems convinced they know us all terribly well.” He swirled the contents of his glass, his gaze briefly flicking toward the guests scattered around the room. “Though judging by the atmosphere, I’d say some people received much nastier surprises than I did.”

His eyes returned to her, curiosity sharpening beneath the easy charm. “You too, then?” He wondered as the corner of his mouth quirked upward. “Tell me, should I be concerned that half the room appears ready to commit murder, or should I simply be offended that someone thought anonymous correspondence was an acceptable substitute for proper entertainment?”

Narcissa wasn't planning on asking what message he had received. She wasn't planning on telling what was in her letter, so she wasn't expecting someone else to tell her as well. Unless they happily admitted it without any prodding. Then she would happily listen to it.

"You are right, some don't seem happy at all. I guess we are the lucky ones." Although... How lucky could you be with receiving anonymous letters. "Anyone you suspect already because they are way too calm about all of this?"

Narcissa didn't answer his reply out loud; she had said enough already to make it known that she had received a letter as well. "At least something interesting is happening now, that was something you couldn't say about the party before this. It's been a bit boring."

Sabrina arched a brow at the question, immediately catching the teasing note beneath it. "Concerned for my social prospects, are you?" A quiet laugh escaped her before she shook her head. "No, I didn't arrive alone, Beck and I came together." Her gaze drifted briefly toward the crowd, though whether she was actually looking for him was debatable. "He was being insufferable, however, so I generously released him back into the wild." The corners of her lips curved upward. "If he's fortunate, he'll find his way back eventually." She paused then, turning her attention back to the blonde, her features softening. "How about you? Where's that husband of yours?"

"I'm never worried about your social prospects. If there is one thing I know, it is that you will get there eventually." Sabrina was a natural when it came to the social aspect of their lives. But despite that, she was still surprised to hear that her friend was here with her ex. "I'm sorry, you're here with Beck? It's not like many take their ex to a gala like this. How did that happen?" Narcissa asked curiously, wondering how Sabrina got trapped in that situation. The blonde motioned over her shoulder to the main room. "When I saw you, I told him to go ahead. I will find my husband later," she explained to the other woman.

"I wouldn't know, I'm not concerned with other people's gossip" she said and there was a hint of kindness in her tone. Whatever people said about Narcissa, she didn't really give a fuck. She didn't entertained gossip when it was about women. Pureblood society was horrible to them anyways.

She then listened to the blonde and nodded her head slowly. "There's nothing wrong with that, if that were the case" she hummed softly. "Assholes tend to turn whatever it is that bring women joy into something worth mocking" she commented casually.

"What do you enjoy if it's not masquerade balls?" She then asked curiously. "Mmm... something like what?" Maybe some of the muggle art being set on fire would be nice.

Oh, how life could be easy if it didn't involve around opinions. Or at least, that is what Narcissa imagined. Her life would definitely be much easier if gossip hadn't been such a constant factor in her life. The day people would stop talking about her and her family, was the day she would welcome with open arms.

"It's going to sound strange, but I do like organising the masquerade balls. Especially if it is for a good cause. But attending them, not so much." Some would say that she was a control freak whenever it came to organising balls or party's. Narcissa would tell them they were right and not be ashamed about it at all.

"Setting muggle art on fire? Hmm, that's probably one of the innocent plans that has been thought of at this party tonight." It wasn't even such a bad idea at all. Narcissa looked at Alecto. "But despite having heard about that plan, I will claim I knew nothing about it." She did not need any guilt in this at all. "Maybe you can find a scapegoat for the fire?"

"My employer has to deal with something that is my contract." A lunch break, a decent one at that. "Besides, does it matter when I take it? It will be taken regardless." For just a moment she lowered her voice, noting that half these people should have come sooner and not demanded custom gowns two, three days prior to such a big event. Even with magic, things were made out of thin air.

Estelle's smile shifted toward that of a smirk. "Perfectly timed, I'd say. And just early enough to slip back into society without overshadowing the hostess in question." There was too much respect for most of the families she dealt with to risk such a thing. Then again, who would turn their eyes toward a simple dress maker. "How have you been?" A question that came naturally as she waved to other workers in the store, a quick sign she'd be taking her lunch break. - @cissaxmalfcy

"Despite the contract... Busy times sometimes ask for extreme measures. Maybe even a breach of lunch times according to a contract," Narcissa pointed out to her friend. There were so many people stuck in the ministry for example who worked longer hours than they were supposed to according to their contract.

The blonde chuckled at the remark made by Estelle about coming sooner. Narcissa would not understand to make a decision about an outfit this late. It was something that she would never do.

The woman walked out of the store, not that it was more quiet there. It was a busy day on the magical streets of Diagon Alley. "I've been okay. Busy mostly with the day to day things. Parents that are annoying me of course. Nothing new much. Well, maybe the fact that I'm getting along with my husband a bit better." As she voiced those last words, she lowered her voice as well. Not everyone needed to hear the problems that she had at home.

"i've never been dishonest with you, you know that," he said, peppering her with a kiss to the side of her cheek. it was true though. in the years they've known each other and through their engagement and marraige, lucius had been honest to a fault. he expressed everything he felt and communicated when it was hard. that was most of the reason they were in this sharp predicament. they were two birds of a feather. "it's primal, my love. they are probably going to realize no one wants to view them and they'll store them in the back or put them in the bins." muggle art was hideous, there was no real craft to it. they weren't open minded enough to know there was a capability that existed outside of their world. "i cannot smile too much, that is where wrinkles form. i reserve my smiles only between us and a select few." lucius rolled his eyes at the mention of his brother-in-law. due to narcissa's closeness with bellatrix, lucius and rodolphus were seemingly always paired off and he was tired of the other man. "my thoughts are superior to his."

Sometimes Narcissa had wished that he wouldn't be too honest with her because her words definitely hurt sometimes. Especially because they were true. But she had come to appreciate it more and more. Simply because she knew what she had to think about him and all. She was probably one of few who saw Lucius and also got what she saw. Words and all. Her gaze moved to the paintings once more and decided for herself that they were going to get stored in the back or returned to whatever Muggle museum they were loaned from. Or wanted to have them. "I'm happy our art collection is getting better and better." It was something that they dd together after all. The blonde chuckled at the mention of the word 'wrinkles'. "Honey, I think that is what magic is for when those wrinkles of yours appear." She leaned in slightly, taking his hand in hers for a moment. "Although I will still appreciate you, wrinkles and all. And including a smile." Her gaze moved over the crowd to see if she could find her brother-in-law but she couldn't so she looked back at Lucius again. "Don't let Bella or him hear it," she said with a smile to him, softly squeezing his hand she was still holding. She didn't think that her sister or brother-in-law would appreciate that comment much. "I know it feels like we've only just arrived, but how long do we need to stay here?"

rita's stern smile fell and softened out of stone at seeing her friend. it was how she talked to those who she most respected and trusted and narcissa was one of those close friends. she tucked her arm into narcissa's and started into a short pace. "your bloodline is it? you know people are talking cissa, i've told them to mind their own business but this is a conversation that some people can't move on from it seems," she smirked. a new married couple that showed no interest in an heir quite yet was almost unheard of and it worried the pureblood community. rita followed her friend's mannerisms and accepted a champagne off a plate as well. "i am merely here to view the event subjectively. but i will have to do an overview for it tomorrow. hopefully i remember each excruciating detail."

Narcissa looked down at the arm hooked into hers and for now she allowed it. Ever since little, she did not quite appreciate people touching her without her initiating it or agreeing on it. But that was something that not everyone needed to now. "It's not of their business. It is not anyone's business, besides Lucius and I." It was their decision if they wanted to be parents or not. But then again... To become parents, you would have to tolerate each other to even start the act of becoming parents. That was definitely something for just the two of them. "You better not end up with some news about my bloodline in that paper of yours then tomorrow."

After Narcissa had walked in and took in the same expression many people had on their faces, she knew that she hadn't been the only one to receive such a strange letter. Her gaze stopped when she saw Ludo standing among the crowd as well. Aaah, at least the company was pleasant still.

The woman made her way over to the man. From his expression she wasn't certain if he had received a letter as well, but Narcissa wasn't the one to stop herself from asking.

"Ludo, good to see you finally. Although when I said earlier to Alecto that this party needed some spicing up, this was not what I expected to happen. Did you receive a letter as well?"

Someone at Burke Manor wanted to make sure this reached you.

After a visit to the toilet, to freshen up, it had suddenly been there in her bag. An envelope, with an unknown seal. The fact that she did not recognise the seal alone was something that was out of the ordinary. Her fingers followed the ink on the envelope for a moment before she opened up the letter.

The words were familiar to her. A thought that had gone through her mind over and over again. It was a summary of her entire life basically and despite the fact that Narcissa knew that... It did not make her appreciate the fact that those words were now written on paper.

The woman definitely would be unable to guess who had written them. Many people could have written this. It wasn't a big kept secret. Anyone with a brain could think of this, considering how their family was known.

Narcissa looked up at her reflection in the mirror and saw the annoyed expression on her face. A deep breath was used to settle herself a bit first, and then she masked up her annoyance with the neutral expression she often wore. No one needed to see her like this.

The young woman put the letter back in her purse, so she would be able to show it to Lucius once they had returned home. Narcissa made her way back into the main hall and it did not take long before it was clear that something had happened there. Her gaze moved over the people surrounding her and several other letters caught her eye...

Bella let out a scoff at Cissa's question. Her youngest sister was perhaps one of the only people who could inspire real affection in Bella. One of the few people in this world she actually thought was worthy of it. Cissa was the exception, the person who could get an actual positive emotion from the broken beast.

"The only thing worse than attending one of these parties would be throwing one." She said with a shudder. "I've done everything I can to avoid becoming our mother. One night as hostess and I fear I would undo all my work."

She swirled her drink, looking around the room speculatively, "although I suppose, it is the perfect opportunity to trap a group of people in a small room. Lure them all here under false pretenses, then unleash absolute chaos." The thought actually brought a smile to her face."

Narcissa knew that Bellatrix had done everything to not be their mother. Probably the reason why she had double up on her efforts with her youngest daughter. But she didn't blame her sister for it at all. If only, she respected her for the fact that she did search her own path. It only made the younger one hope that she had it in her as well.

The wickedness in her sister showed at the idea that developed in her mind and then Narcissa shook her head. "I pray that you won't do that. I think there are actually too many Ministry people walking around here for you to pull that off." Another reason why this event was a failure from the start.

"Why do you think they thought it was a good idea to work together with the Ministry to set up this event to start with?"

lucius held his hardened jaw even as narcissa took the place. the good part of an event like this was that they could combine their social efforts and play off each other in conversation. and lucius could leave her be and he could take a break. he saw her every day as it was and lucius had needed some reprieve from their home life. "of course, my dear, who else would it be for," lucius said through a veneer of sarcasm. the more that people saw them being a lovely couple, the more maybe he would believe it himself. "how would you like me to behave, my love? we are surrounded by people who don't know what real art is. but you might just be the most beautiful piece of art in here."

A soft chuckle escaped Narcissa at the words of her husband and she shook her head. "So much flattery," she said with a smile to him and she leaned back in her seat a bit better. Her gaze moved to some of the paintings on display. "You know, it still baffles me that those paintings don't move." It made them directly more boring in her opinion. Her gaze stayed on the painting a bit longer, before moving back to her husband. "How I want you to behave, is to see a smile on that beautiful face of yours. Then it looks so much better than it does now." The blonde tilted her head slightly before she spoke up again. "But if you truly wish to complain about this event, I know that Rodolphus has the same opinion and would not mind to complain about it together."

"oh, please cissa. i know you can keep a promise, but your bark is also bigger than your bite. i am protecting the arts of which i am a patron of, it is nothing against your character. but if you see something you like, let me know. these bidding matches can be insane," she said, light on too much champagne and at the same time, not well damn enough. "more events than me? i see you at the same ones i attend and i go to some of which you are not there. i would say we are about equal, but if you want to tally up our attendance records then i have nothing to hide. do you?" she smiled viciously. "be my guest if you want your bloodline to be cursed. it won't be my fault since i tried to warn you."

Being treated as someone who visited a place like this for the first time was not something that Narcissa appreciated a lot but going against this woman was also not something that was worth her energy. "I mean the ones that count," The blonde said, motioning at the people around her. This one was on the edge of being worthy her time, as her mother would put it. The Burke family was one worthy of them. The people walking around here... Not that much. And those events, the ones that mattered, had been on her 'tally' - to use the words of Rita - ever since she had been old enough to attend them. "I appreciate the concern over my bloodline, but I think we are good." She picked up one of the glasses of champagne that someone was carrying who passed by and took a sip of the liquid. "Are you reporting on this event?"

Rodolphus offered a small, welcoming tilt of his glass as Narcissa walked over, the sharp tension in his jaw loosening only a fraction at the sight of familiar company.

"Not nearly enough," he muttered, taking a proper drink of the firewhisky. He leaned his shoulder against the wall, looking out at the crowd with a tired, exasperated smirk. "If Lucius is looking for someone to complain with, do send him my way."

He lowered his voice, his tone completely casual as he looked past her shoulder. "Speaking of which...have you spotted Burke around yet? I've heard she's finally making a reappearance tonight."

"I guess we will have to keep those glasses coming then. I do hope you can hold your liquor." Now that Narcissa thought about it... She couldn't remember a situation in which he had ever seemed intoxicated. Or maybe he was pretty good at hiding it. She had no idea regarding that.

The blonde took a sip of her drink and looked around the room. Both to see if she could find Lucius or if she could find the mentioned woman by Rodolphus. "I have not seen Burke around yet. Or do we think she will return to her birth name?" She asked, knowing that Fawley was a name known to their circles as well.

Alecto looked at Narcissa and paused for a moment, her beauty was something that always something worthy of being admired. "And what exactly do others think?" She asked curiously, there was no mockery in her tone, just playfulness.

"Ah, I needed fresh air" she drawled. "It was getting stuffy in there... and some people in there are just insufferable" she said simply, not getting into a lot of names, just in case.

"You tell me," Narcissa bounced back the question for a second, looking at the other woman. She was only able to fill in the question based on what she thought was the case. Alecto would be able to tell her what people actually thought of her.

"I think that most people perceive me as a princess who enjoys going to the masked ball." A fairytale of sorts, with Lucius as her prince charming. If they only knew that she was far from it, including her prince charming.

"Insufferable. You are not the first person to describe the people at this party tonight like that." Her gaze move to the gardens that were spread out in front of them. "We need something to happen at this party to make it a fun one, probably."

A smile came easily at the sight of Narcissa, the brunette leaning in to return the kisses to her cheeks. “Flatterer,” she accused fondly, though the compliment was accepted all the same. “You look beautiful, Cissa.”

At the question, she let out a quiet laugh, glancing briefly toward the ballroom before returning her attention to her friend. “Not particularly. Though seeing you has improved my mood considerably.” Her lips curved slightly. “How long before half the party is looking for an excuse to leave?”

"Thank you," Narcissa said cheerily at the compliment coming from her friend. Sometimes it was just strange to realise that she was still friends with a person she had met thirteen years ago. But the young woman was lucky with people like Sabrina, Estelle and Emma.

"Hmm, if the rumours are true, I think that it will take about fifteen minutes before half of the party has had enough of it yet."

The blonde looked around before looking at her friend again. "So you arrived here alone? No one accompanying you?" She teased Sabrina, a smile playing on her lips.

The witch's face lit up, smile as wide as it could. Loyalty was hard won when it came to her. Estelle had picked her friends well, and she would always grant them that title so long as they wanted it. Time, though, was a factor she couldn't deny. "I only just got in last night. Given that I had a portkey it was quick, but I didn't exactly have the time to reach out yet. I would have, but with the gala and everything." Her accent, a hint more French than it used to simply by habit but even that would float away again soon.

"If you want, I can take my lunch break early. We can catch up." Oh, she very much would love to. That, and that despite the fact that fashion was something she loved, time right before such a gala was a nightmare after just a few hours of frenzied stomping customers. - @cissaxmalfcy

Narcissa took in the woman in front of her and took her in. It had been quite some time since she had seen her last. It was mostly the little things that she noticed, like the French accent that was more obvious than before she had left.

"If your employer does not mind, I would love to catch up with you. Of course, the letters were a lot, but I want to have a summary of it all. Again." She had missed her friend a lot. Although she could see that it was rather busy so she had no idea if Estelle would be able to.

"You did pick the right time to return," she mentioned as she looked at the many people in the store.
