âI know humans are industrious, but this seems beyond even your capabilities. Terraforming an entire planet-â
The human who brought forth the question of purchase with intent to terraform, one named Abagail, interrupted. âDwarf planet. Itâs only 600 miles around the entire planet. Thatâs less than half of our continents, certainly within our competence.â
Therin, the Hywe who led the council, did not show Abagail how annoyed he was at her interruption. âItâs size is not the only concern. This planet has no atmosphere. You humans may be able to adjust an existing atmosphere, but you cannot create one on a planet whose gravity is too small to hold on to it.â
âIf youâll please look at page 47 of the document, youâll see our plans to build an atmosphere sphere around the entire planet, along with the pressure variable ports to allow for ferrying of passengers to and from the planet surface.â
Therin didnât move for a moment, trying to judge if this was a human joke. He finally did flip to the appropriate page, and sure enough, the plans were there. In agonizingly human detail. He glanced at his fellow council members.
âAll of this would have to be looked at and approved by our technicians of course,â Lowri offered, eager to support Therin.
Abagail easily hid the smile that other species found offensive, the one that proves she knew she was winning. âYou should see the stamp of approval from several renowned architects, engineers, and tacticians if you flip to page 54.â
Therin didnât want to. He did, but he didnât want to. The page full of approvals from the very beings he was going to use to shoot this nonsense down stared back, mocking him.
âThis will not be a cheap endeavor. I assume you have funds available?â Therin guessed, knowing already that this too would be an ineffective block to the insane request.
Abagail nodded. âYes, we have set aside funds for each section of the project, and will only need a loan for the final phase. Should we not be able to complete the final phase, the planet with its new atmosphere and life-sustaining capabilities will be sold.â
Therin flipped helplessly through the rest of the document. Everything was in order, any concern was verified, and plans to address them were documented. One last glance to his fellow council members and he began the silent vote.
The results were immediate. Therin sagged in defeat.
âYour request has been approved.â
âThank you.â
âThereâs just one last thing we need to know in order to file. What is the new name of this planet?â
Abagail smiled. âDisney.â
Frame of Reference
Ownhurr sorted through the crystal samples the humans were bringing out of the cave. Figs was returning from their 20 minute shift with another crate of specimens. Team supervisors were very strict to ensure that their subordinates did not hyperfixate and stay in the cave too long.
"Figs, I have some questions when you have a sec." They held up their index finger in a "stand-by" gesture. In an alarmingly short period of they guzzeled 1.5 litres of water. Next they pulled several plastic pouches from their cool suit.
"What's up?" They asked between heavy breaths.
"Why do you use ice to cool the suits that prevent heat stroke? There are other compounds that would keep you cool far longer."
"True enough," They agreed. "But heat stroke isn't the only danger."
"What is?" He asked.
"Our lungs are cooler than the humid air, so water condenses in our lungs. Eventually we would drown."
"Why would you go into caves if you could drown by breathing?" He exclaimed.
"Dude, shiny rocks!" He pulled out a double handful from the crate to demonstrate.
"Then why not wear a full environmental suit?"
"No way!" Figs was emphatic. "I'm claustrophobic."
"But....but....." he sputtered in disbelief "You spend all day in caves!"
"It's the limited field of view." They explained. "After an accident in spaceflight I spent 60 hours adrift in the Void. I thought I was going to die. Ever since that, helmets freak me out."
"But not cave with 100% humidity and temperatures up to 60 degrees C?"
"Nope."
What if human bodily fluids (sweat, saliva, blood, etc.) were highly corrosive and lethal to aliens, would that be fucked up or what
...especially if blood was the most lethal like how cool would that be
It was common knowledge that human biology was dangerous. Not quite deadly most of the time, but not something you wanted to treat casually. In fact, most species biology was dangerous to others, save for the Hywe, who were neither affected by nor affected others.
When the crystalline species QolĂŚ was discovered, after a terrible welcome gift gone wrong incident, biologists took to discovering how they would affect others and what might affect them.
Never before had biologists had so many accidental deaths. While nothing seemed to affect the QolĂŚ, their own bodies were corrosive to all others, even the Hywe. Brief contact caused a buzzing, but prolonged contact would cause burns.
The more studies were done into the QolĂŚ, the more dangerous they were revealed to be. So many rules and regulations were created to protect others who would be around them.
When the ambassador of the QolĂŚ requested to go home, the human who brought them arrived to take them home. The human gave the QolĂŚ a hand motion greeting, but then stepped far too close.
The human female, Anita, was requested to submit a few tests, and was revealed to be entirely resistant to the QolĂŚâs many biological affections. Further testing revealed her time spent on their planet gave Anita and the humans in her crew immunity to the QolĂŚ.
Biologists claimed it was humansâ adaptability that allowed them to quickly gain immunization, but secretly they were just as confused. If humans could change themselves so quickly, whatâs to stop them from becoming just as biologically deadly as those they are around? And what other species might the humans bring to the galaxy?
Earth is space Australia but with russians
so, i saw this post the other day, saying something in the lines of sending the australians to inhabitate a warm, poisonous planet, so what if we turn it around?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Confederation recently found a *completely* death world. With freezing temperatures and very few flora and fauna, not even humans could possibly think to inhabitate it, right?
They sent a messenger with the report to the Human Counselor, they take the paper and stare at it for a while, mumble some incoherent sound, and sigh. They turn to their secretary and say, with a hint of a laughter in their voice:
"Send the russians"
iâm going to fucking explode
the spacex all-private inspiration4 mission (which is being run as a reality tv show) is using apple watches for its biometrics. theyâre flying in a space capsule with all the equipment and controls stripped out to make it look smooth and pretty, in spacesuits designed by a marvel costume designer instead of engineers, wearing fucking apple watches for biometrics
the shipâs built like a fucking tesla and it uses a fucking touchscreen for controls
opâs not the only thing thatâs going to explode
Okay I sent an ask to my mutual about this because weâre both Aerospace Engineering students, myself specializing in Astronautics, but y'know what fuck it I got nothing better to do and I just wanna go over some of SpaceXâsâŚdesign choices.
So completely ignoring the whole issue with privatizing space travel and Night Sky Clutter with the whole OneWeb/Starlink issue, SpaceX makes very questionable and sometimes outright idiotic design choices. With the Dragon Capsule alone, the decision to remove virtually any form of manual control and to have all of your inputs be done via touchscreen is justâŚnot smart. At all. The suits they wear are purely designed for aesthetic and lack any form of personal protection and seemingly lack any form of life support or survival equipment. For comparison, the LES and ACES suits all include some form of limited life support in the event that your mode of transportation has a critical failure while also being pressure suits or at the very least partial-pressure suits and carry multiple survival aspects such as parachutes, inflatable life rafts, and other tools to help an astronaut survive and be recovered from emergency landing sites that will usually be in the wilderness. The SpaceX suits, well, we donât KNOW whatâs in the suit because Musky boy wonât tell us. Itâs privatized, what do you expect, they care more about keeping their tech to themselves than safety or transparency. Itâs claimed to survive a âvacuum chamberâ just fine but no actual test results have been shown. Musk himself claimed that the suits are an improvement from the old LES and itâs replacement the ACES suits because itâs sleeker and with a cool white design. Now lemme say something on this, there is a fucking reason that the old suits are bulky and orange. Why? Because theyâre pressure suits with survival equipment and life support built in. Theyâre not sleek because how the fuck are you gonna fit air bladders, a parachute, survival kits, aid kits, and air systems on a sleek suit? Thatâs why the old suits were bulky because they worried about the SAFETY of the wearer not how fucking cool they look. Also the orange? Y'know why theyâre orange? So we can fucking seem them if they end up stranded in the ocean or wilderness after an emergency landing. In fact, one veteran astronaut who flew on missions STS-129 and STS-135 compared the suits to the old Soviet Sokol suits. Now I donât know how many of you know about Sokol suits, but these are basically backup âeverything has gone to shitâ suits. However even the Sokol suit contains some form of life support which is more than can confidently be said about the SpaceX suits.
And beyond just this photo we also have Elon insisting that satellite casings and thermal control systems be painted BLACK because it makes them look cooler but hereâs the thing, the reason satellites typically have white, beige, or gaudy ass chrome foil covering is because the sun is a hot motherfucker and electronics, and well electronics my friends, donât like heat. Guess what black does? It absorbs heat, well technically visible light but whatever. So we put light colors and reflective covering on satellites and components designed for space so they can reflect heat and try to keep them cool. SpaceX on the other hand has to include more intense cooling measures because their idiot leader follows the rule of cool which ironically makes things less cool. Oh and thereâs also the whole issue with the first rocket blowing up due to fuel sloshing which, I should add, is the first thing you learn not to do and how to AVOID in any form of aerospace engineering so, y'know, the fact that their rocket suffered from that is, well, telling.
Anyway this got a lot longer than I intended but fuck it man and fuck Elon, and fuck SpaceX for thinking Star Trek aesthetics are more important than, idk, the entire collective knowledge weâve gained about space travel and flight safety.
Minceaft Steve and The Villager are friends now
Steve: so yeah all you need to craft a door is 6 pieces of wood
Villager, who has to upgrade their entire house 5 times before having the option to change the door on their house:
Villager: *slaps any electronic they made in their garage on the grass and turns it on instantly without hooking it up to anything* ta da!
Steve, who regularly chokes on redstone dust:
Villager: *hits a rock with a shovel to obtain ore*
Steve:
This is important.
Itâs not a âloopholeâ itâs explicit within the text of the amendment
âLoopholeâ lmfao like itâs a fucking accident, like it wasnât purposefully structured to reclaim and expand a source of free labor
We never outlawed slavery in America. We simply transferred ownership of slaves from individual landowners to the government and large corporations.
Other fun facts about prison labor corporations:
-Federal and state-run prisons usually pay their slaves minimum wage; some states, however, like Colorado, pay $2/hour.
-Private prisons pay $.17-.50/hour. The highest paying private prison is in Tennessee, which pays $.50/hour for âhighly-skilled labor.â
-You think that hasnât affected wages in the US? You think that hasnât removed manufacturing jobs from the economy?
-Companies that contract with private prisons for their slave labor include: IBM, Boeing, Motorola, Microsoft, AT&T, Wireless, Texas Instrument, Dell, Compaq, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Lucent Technologies, 3Com, Intel, Northern Telecom, TWA, Nordstromâs, Revlon, Macyâs, Pierre Cardin, Target Stores. Many, many products that say âMade in USAâ were made in prison.
-Private prisons often have quotas with the states, wherein the states contractually guarantee that they will provide a certain number of prisoners to fill the beds of a private prison, and if they donât then they owe the private prison millions of dollars. Iâm not making this up. It happened in Colorado after they legalized weed.
-States have a financial incentive to lock up their citizens.
-All of the above corporations have a financial incentive to see citizens get locked up.
-This is why Jeff Sessions is going after weed. The prison industrial complex needs slaves.
-To the shock of absolutely no one, private prisons have even more disparate racial demographics than federal/state prisons.
-Where do you think they send undocumented immigrants who have been rounded up? Thatâs right, private prisons. Thatâs why so many of them are in the South. So they take immigrants who are earning some kind of comparable wage and paying income tax to the government, and put them in prison where the wages are absurdly depressed and the prison pays virtually nothing in taxes.
-Oh yeah: private prisons pay virtually nothing in taxes. Because they technically manage real estate (prison as housing), they get all sorts of tax breaks and subsidies.
Tl;dr the prison industrial complex removes jobs from the economy, depresses wages, cheats the tax system, and ENSLAVES PEOPLE, usually people of color.

As someone who ran into the glue at 23rd st while trying to commute home during the protest I can tell you that:
1) there was a sign encouraging you not to swipe or get glue on your card and that
2) the emergency exit door was open so you could either walk onto the platform or hop the turnstile to still access the train
The protesters left you with a choice: become a fare evader (supporting the protest) or leave. But they didn't stop access to the subway as a utility.
I see a lot of outrage in the comments about inconveniencing people on their commute home but consider whose commute under "normal" circumstances -- under police surveillance -- are inconvenienced by police.
Are you upset because you're not someone who usually has to think about if you'll be singled out for doing the same thing as everyone else?
Did the protests make you experience the thing that, oh, they were protesting against?
Hey, then they worked.
And if you don't like it, well, the next subway stop is 5 blocks away. How convenient for you that this impediment was a one day, one stop friction in your life and not a constant threat.
And before anyone complains about how the protest impacted disability accessibility, 23rd st doesn't have an elevator or other accessibility options. Let's start with critiquing the institutional access first, shall we?

Itâs 2018 and I still have no clue how CDs work. Itâs a shiny disc, how do they get data on that, let alone that much?? Magic
Like a vinyl disc, where a physical groove is marked into the vinyl, a laser marks the ink of a CD in a similar manner. A laser (your disc drive) can then look at the pattern in the ink and understand it.
Thereâs no grooves on a CD tho???
Theyâre just really tiny, hence the laser. The smaller grooves means that more info can fit on a disc of the same size.
Man how the fuck did they figure out how to make that
well they looked at a record and said âHow do we fit more information on this?â to which the reply is âWell either you make the record bigger or the grooves smallerâ and making the grooves smaller is way more convenient so they say âWell how do we make the grooves smaller?â and thatâs when a total madman comes out with eyes flashing and yells âWITH A LASER!â
And thatâs how the CD was invented
how did they figure out how to fit information in grooves in a piece of vinyl in the first place????
probably got some ideas outta this
Fucking mad lads
