Very fancy potato bear postcard from my collection, unsent and date unknown.
A group of far-future linguists and archeologists suddenly *poof* into existence in front of me. One is holding a tablet. "What is the difference between 'red sauce' and 'tomato sauce?'" they ask me. "The distinction is not clear in extant texts from this time and place."
"Uh, they're the same thing," I tell them. "Who are you?"
"Yes!" the being with the tablet exclaims.
One of the other researchers groans. "No! My thesis...months of writing wasted..." One of the others comforts them.
"Now, what is this object for?" The first researcher holds up a discolored, dinged-up plastic object. It's clearly been buried in the ground for quite some time, but the two holes and the scuffed plastic window are distinctive.
"That's a cassette tape. You record music with it."
"Interesting, interesting." The being enters something on the tablet.
"How are you speaking English?"
"Sophisticated translation technology," one of the researchers confides. "We are students of your society. From the future."
"What does this pictogram represent?" The researcher with the tablet turns it around so that the screen faces me.
It's the eggplant emoji.
"Sex," I say. "Why do you need to ask me this if you can time travel or whatever? Can't you just go wherever you want to go and look around and see how these things are being used?"
The beings shift guiltily and look at each other. "Technically, travel to times and places prior the advent of time travel is strictly prohibited. Paradoxes, you know."
"Oh."
"We must get back before our advisor returns to the lab. Just don't tell anyone you saw us, alright? The space-time continuity depends on it. Can you do that?"
"Uh, sure, I guess?"
One of them pats me on the head. "And don't go to Mars."
"Okay. Wait, why? Is it dangerous?"
"No. Just not worth it."
The group disappears in a shimmering light.
The cassette clatters to the sidewalk behind them.
Out of befuddlement, mainly, I pick it up. It's clearly old, discolored and scuffed, but it still has tape in it.
I carry the tape around in my pocket for a while. The curiosity builds. I want to know what's on that tape. I don't have a cassette player anymore, so I go to Goodwill and pick up the first one I can find, praying that it still works. I plug it in. It turns on.
I slide the tape inside. It's dirty, but it still seems to be in decent shape. I snap the player closed and hit play. The wheels begin to turn. I hold my breath.
A familiar tune starts up. A wobbly voice comes out of the machine.
We're no strangers to love
This expansion is really turning the league into one huge mess!
If only we had some sort of royal tiger paper towel…
Maybe even one that is perphaps known for powering through tough messes…
still think it’s incredible they made a movie musical about pt barnum where the point is like love and accept yourself no matter who you are or what you look like <3 when pt barnum irl was like exploitation georg who lives in a circus and and dehumanizes 10,000 people daily. not sure how they came up with that one
I also think a lot about how the villains in the movie were fun-hating critics and bigots who just didn’t like to see marginalized people ~following their dreams~, when Barnum’s real opponents were people saying things like “Hey, it’s really weird that you’re treating these human beings like zoo animals.”
Quick intro. This is a poem about how a lot of the U.S. might be feeling right now, or my interpretation anyway.
BREAK
What everyone needs but few receive
Time spent away, a brief reprieve
Impossible, really, to conceive
There's time to take a break
Gotta work all night and day
Precious few hours to while away
Our corporate leaders do hold sway
Our wages theirs to take
No rest on weekends to obtain
Got chores to do, house to maintain
These lives we live do not sustain
Our fragile psyches shake
Expected to move on from grief
Time spent mourning sadly brief
No end in sight, there's no relief
Need rest, for pity's sake
'Come back to work, pretend you're fine'
'No need to rest, so rise and shine'
'To be productive is divine'
Material idols spake
All to make their pockets filled
Those CEOs who are all thrilled
To watch the working class get killed
Their empathy all fake
And so, too soon, our money's spent
On barely making this month's rent
Knees to the oligarchs are bent
A fall of our own make
Too many are so ignorant
Racist and belligerent
Blaming our woes on immigrants
Democracy now quakes
Because we cannot get along
Cannot agree on what went wrong
It is now our country's swan song
Must learn from our mistakes
Speak truth to power, show your might!
We must resist and we must fight!
Don't let your hope be shut from light!
Oh sleeping giant wake!
Time to unite and eat the rich!
We are beat up, but it's our turn birch!
Step to the plate, and hit that pitch!
For all those lives at stake
Pay attention! Don't be fooled
We're not a kingdom to be ruled
Be in the know, do not be schooled
Or you'll drown in the lake
Bogged down by waves of misery
Forget the feel of being free
Don't bow your heads to tyranny
Or you...will surely...break
there needs to be a way to say “there’s a reason i only talk to you once a week” to your mom without blowing up your relationship with your mom
Spiritually we’re in my car listening to music together in a parking lot
frog riding fish
I'll take your word for it man
‘puppy want a treat??’ puppy just wants one goddamn day without suffering
It is important to remember that as far as art history goes, that it is patently untrue that realism only became humanly possible with the development of linear perspective in Europe thanks to Brunelleschi (a commonly repeated myth in lower division art education), and that examples of artistic realism as we know it today has long existed in many, much older art traditions. West African arts cultures are a great example to work off of. (i.e. Yoruba)
This Yoruba bust (or Ife Head) is dated to the 12th-14th centuries.
This misunderstanding also deeply, unfortunately, and inaccurately mischaracterizes traditional arts in African cultures as being “less developed” for being more stylized, as if they cannot figure out realism due to difficulty (lmao?), which simply is not the case.
I don’t often make original posts like this, but I’ve rarely seen this addressed outside of art history land, and it really bothers me!!!
I think that if a story ever pulls a line like "You could have destroyed your magic with a stunt like that!" or "Pushing ahead with your magic too quickly can have dangerous consequences!" then the story should be obligated at some point to show me these magically disabled people.
All stories should have more disabled people, honestly, because disability is a basic part of being alive! What am I supposed to think of any given fictional community if I never see any elderly people, any retired people, any injured people, or any disabled people?
But seriously, a lot more fantasy stories specifically could really stand to show people who have been burned by magic to various degrees and are now living with the consequences. I'm too used to the protagonists fainting and sleeping extreme recklessness off without issue.
you need to listen to rap and hiphop you need to listen to jazz you need to listen to blues and country and bluegrass or else you will be inflicted with something most foul of the soul
Windows media player on windows 11 no longer recognizes cds
I ripped a ton of CDs I bought at an estate sale using Windows Media Player on Windows 11 back in September, so I wanted to look into this. Turns out Microsoft shut down the server that retrieves music metadata sometime in early December.
Starting yesterday morning (Dec 15 2025), Windows Media Player Legacy cannot find media info for CDs I am ripping. WPM displays unknown alb
Note that it will still play and rip CDs just fine, but they will only show up as "Unknown Album." If you want to rip CDs, you will need third party software. fre:ac has been good in my experience
Good job, Microsoft.
