Visible Mending
Introduction:
Visible mending is a decorative way to fix up an item. Instead of trying to make your mend as invisible as possible, the idea is to make it part of the garment's design.
Visual mending is not a single technique: it's more of a mindset. If you've got an item you love, it deserves to be mended, and if you're going to put that love into stitches, why not show them off?
That being said, there are some specific techniques that are popular with visible menders. Let's take a look!
Sashiko:
Sashiko is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery that is used to both decorate and reinforce fabric. In visible mending, sashiko is often used to cover up holes with patches or to reinforce thinning fabric. This technique uses a variation on the running stitch.

Embroidery:
Regular embroidery is also a popular technique to accentuate your mends. Check out my embroidery 101 post to learn how to get started. You can embroider patches, or use embroidery to hide or accentuate any stitches you've made to fix holes. Embroidery's also a great way to cover up stains.

Patches:
There are many ways to add patches to a garment. My tutorial on patches is a good place to start if you want to make custom-shaped patches to sew on top of your fabric. You can also sew your patch on the inside of your garment and have it peek out from beneath the hole you're trying to fix. Fun ideas for this are lace or superheroes.

Darning:
Darning is a technique used to repair holes in fabric by using running stitches to weave extra fabric over the hole as to fill it up again. While traditionally darning is done in an invisible way by using the same colour of thread as your fabric, you can also use contrasting colours to accentuate your fix. Check out this written tutorial on darning by TheSpruceCrafts.

Conclusion:
Visible mending is a creative way to fix up your clothes and give them some personality at the same time.
You should be proud of the fact that you took the time and learned the necessary skills needed to mend your clothes! Show off what you did!
A fun side effect of wearing these obvious mends is that people will notice them. They'll remember your fixes the next time they're faced with a hole in their wardrobe, and it will make them more likely to try it for themselves.
These are just a few ways to visibly mend your garments. Want more inspiration? Check out Pinterest or r/Visiblemending on Reddit.

@ artists with perfectionism problems, I have a favour to ask of you:
Please draw me the shittiest wolf you can manage. I am talking truly awful here, okay? Just so bad. Like, "if you put in effort, you've already lost" levels of bad. "If that shit took you more than 5mins, it's clearly too good already" levels of bad.
Please, I desire truly terrible wolf drawings.

My bosses are debating canceling school for the rest of the year soon. If they do Iâll be out of a job and they donât wanna supliment our pay like they did in March. So I need to get ready to file unemployment and apply to a lot of jobs. This is gonna fuck us over and Iâm already so stressed about later tonight.
yes EVERY american soldier is an imperialist yes even the female ones yes even the black ones yes even the queer ones yes even the muslim ones. idpol has rotted your brains.
if youâre an american and you can go ACAB even though some police officers are poor minorities but draw the line at condemning the military because some soldiers are poorâyou need to ask yourself why violence against non-americans is so much more acceptable to you.
Hey Iâm not qualified enough or have spoons to properly go off on this but the military and police force are objectively not the same. Military people cannot just quit and go home, theyâre tied down by contracts they legally cannot break. Kids are (at least in America) brainwashed and propagandized into wanting to join the military almost as soon as theyâre born. I am not being hyperbolic. Army toys, Marvel movies, high school Military recruitment booths, Youtube and Television Military ads- Itâs a deep, dark rabbithole and itâs a lot more nuanced than âCops bad. Military bad. Soldiers are just cops who kill non-Americans.â Like please educate yourself because stigmatizing people who get tricked, traumatized, and thrown away by those in power is not revolutionary nor helpful.
have you considered that the reason you believe that american military is not as bad as the cops is that you are a victim of propaganda too?
I donât want to put words in @jemthecrystalgemââs mouth, but it sounds as though what theyâre actually saying is not âthe military is not as bad as the cops,â but rather âthe military is much, much worse than the cops, while also a) benefiting from a massive, nation-wide brainwashing campaign and b) being nearly impossible to get out of before your term is up.
You have a nice ass and should show it off more on discord. Just saying <3 -Corvus
Okay, you wanna drive up here and take pictures then?

tbh i think yâall (mostly cis and binary trans) are just. devoted to misunderstanding, suppressing and bullying nonbinary ppl.
yâall tried to obliterate âjoyfriendâ yâall tried to spread shit about âenbyâ being unilaterally infantalizing, youâre coming after âfolxâ (which isnât even necessarily a nonbinary thing) and âmxâ and making jokes about it and creating this âyxllâ meme. yâall try to shuffle us into neat little boxes, push labels and attraction categories on us, exclude us from communities we belong in (LOOKING AT YOU, EXORSEXIST MLM BLOGS), create an innaccurate, fatphobic, racist, exorsexist image for nonbinary people to âconform toâ you refuse to respect our pronouns and our experiences with gender, you refuse to look past your basic, exorsexist view of the world, you try to exclude us from trans spaces, we face endless scrutiny.
none of you actually care about nonbinary people and it fucking shows
binary people can rb but donât add any bullshit or fucking else. i encourage ppl to reblog this post
(edit 9/22: added âunilaterallyâ for more clarity. please reblog this version!)
people in the notes: rb this version instead pls!
you know whatâs always bothered me? how people talk about their babies having ârandom weird fussy daysâ and they get mad about it right but the thing about that is...
babies donât steadily grow, they grow in spurts, which means on a growth day theyâre in quite a lot of pain ... but no one takes it seriously because a baby canât communicate that theyâre growing over a centimeter over night and that HURTS
like, massage your fussy baby ... theyre having a hard time ... theyre growing obscene amounts in a short period of time and need love and care ...
people will be like âmy baby crawled yesterday but now theyre all fussy and acting like they cant crawl.â
ok i dont see you trying to run a marathon every day during a growth spurt when you did it yesterday ... fuckin chill. that baby is hurting.
everything about a babys growth is painful but no one talks about it??? why?! respect your baby and understand what amazing feats theyre accomplishing every day. geez. !!!!
doctors literally have to tell people âno you cant spoil your infant by holding them too much and helping them feel better when they cryâ and tbh that alone is disgusting that people have so little regard for their babies they think providing adequate care to them is the same as âspoilingâ them and will use their periods of growth and pain as examples of a spoiled baby. đĄ
like did yall know youre not even supposed to wait for a newborn to cry before feeding them?? youre supposed to feed them before they cry because crying is actually hard on their stomachs and makes things worse!!! but people would apparently rather be annoyed at their child before feeding them????
Thereâs been multiple studies that show how children who were held a lot, talked to, dotted on, and had their feelings taken seriously as small babies/children have healthier brains than those who were treated like you said or worse.
Neglected kids have less function in their temporal lobes and are more likely to suffer from mental illness whether they cognitively remember the events or not. Another thing that has been known for decades now.
It starts at birth. Children MUST be cared for. Leaving them to sob hysterically or punishing them in any way for being in pain can end up dooming them to a sad life. This culture of letting your kid cry and even getting mad at them for it is exactly why the older generations typically has such a problem with emphasizing with others.
Love your kids.
âbabies have painful growth spurtsâ and "don't wait for your baby to be so hungry they cry" should not be radical concepts yet here we are
