I've been gradually coming to the realization that a lot of what I've been told about cluster B disorders, and especially "narcissistic abuse" is just bullshit. For example, one thing I've seen a lot is the idea that, even if not all narcissists are abusers, abuse from a narcissist is somehow fundamentally different than abuse from someone without a PD. And after actually educating myself on abuse... I don't buy it. At all. Like, what even is "narcissistic abuse" anyway?

The answers I've found so far:

"Narcissistic abuse is worse than other kinds of abuse." In what way? If that's what this comes down to, then why not rename it my-trauma-is-worse-than-yours abuse? Since when is it okay to treat being abused like a competition?

"Narcissistic abuse is more calculated than regular abuse." but the people claiming this are also claiming that narcissists can't control their emotions and everything they do is just a reaction to having their egos hurt. So... which is it?

"Narcissistic abuse is just the tactics more common in abusers who have NPD." But when you ask what those tactics are, they will say things like "triangulation" or "flying monkeys," which when you look into it just means an abuser turning other people against the victim. Am I supposed to believe that neurotypical abusers have all just never considered that was a possibility? Or is this some kind of unlockable skill granted by NPD, as if abusing people works like a video game?

The more I think about, the more it baffles me that anyone is buying it. Even if you ignore the ableism, what is even the utility in making this distinction? Who benefits?
