Most of the time they’re fine but there’s always a rowdy bunch every year that will prey on weaknesses. It’s like they smell fear and it takes everything in me to remind myself that I’m an adult and I’m not going to get a swirly or anything.

I still feel like that sometimes. But once I’m up there and playing, it starts to feel like home.
I tried a solo once in college and immediately barfed unladylike into my french horn, and that’s when I decided to stick to music theory. At least if I’m conducting a concert at the school, the parents aren’t watching me, so I’m less likely to go projectile.

Well, you aren’t wrong there. It takes a different breed of people to live in a small town and not go completely off the wall bonkers– seeing as how the town’s still standing, I’d say we’re doing pretty good.
