When you have multiple patients on the unit coding at the same time
Yesterday I started my shift with a patient getting a pneumothorax, and when we'd handled that..... Anther one got a septic shock.. Both were my patients. All survived.
When the patient is on 4 anticoagulants and the surgeon decides to throw in a central line
As an introvert, you can be your own best friend or your worst enemy. The good news is we generally like our own company, a quality that extroverts often envy. We find comfort in solitude and know how to soothe ourselves. Even our willingness to look at ourselves critically is often helpful. But, we can go too far. We can hoard responsibility and overlook the role others play. We can kick ourselves when we’re down. How many times have you felt lousy about something, only to get mad at yourself for feeling lousy?

My patient that is 1 day post-op from major abdominal surgery asks if the doctor will discharge them tomorrow...
Actually happened to me last week! I love when my patients get operated with robot assisted surgery. Less pain, less complications and shorter post op care! Win win. Btw, he discharged himself at post op day 3.. 😷🔪💉

When, by all accounts, the patient that should not have survived walks out of your unit…..
Confession 8
A patient of mine we're about to die last week due to liver failure. Her boyfriend proposed to her while she was grasping for air. None of us really thought she would make it, but now, 1 week later she is recovering, she's walking in the hallways, she's started eating again and all her labs are improving. She's off IV nutrition and has only needed some extra blood. Oh, the magic of love!
I Bought my First Pair of Scrubs Today
When I was a little girl, I was awestruck by nurses. Whenever I saw them, wherever I saw them- in the hospital, or the grocery store, or walking down the street- I would look back at them while my mom tugged on my hand to keep walking. I couldn’t help but stare at them- I didn’t know what exactly it was about them that made them so intriguing to me. Maybe it was because they always seemed so warm and welcoming, they would always smile at me, or because I knew that they were saving lives and that made them like real life superheroes. The scrubs they wore were like their capes and whenever I saw someone wearing those scrubs, I would feel safe. Like if any crazy thing were to happen in that moment, they would save me. I used to daydream that one day I would be able to wear scrubs of my own one day, and I too would be a superhero. Today I bought my first pair of scrubs. Im anxiously awaiting my first clinical placement that starts in two weeks. The feeling of walking into that store, and chatting with the owner- I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning. I was so excited and I started pulling every style and every colour that I could see off of the shelves. I tried on the first pair and looked at myself in this mirror and was taken aback. I’ve been waiting for this moment my entire life. This is real. This isn’t dress up. This isn’t a daydream. I’m trying these on because I will need them in a matter of weeks. Because in a matter of weeks I’ll be at people’s bedsides, trying my best to be warm and welcoming, and to smile at them. To make them comfortable and to save them from their misery. This was my cape. I’m a superhero. I’m everything I ever dreamed of becoming. I have my own scrubs.
This needs more notes
Yep, sure does.
Confession 7
I will pray for you tonight even though I usually never do. You were such a brave and wise man, and I hope that you’re in a better place by now. I hope that you can go to the bathroom by yourself in heaven, since it was your final wish. I hope you can relive those precious moments you’ve shared with me. I hope your pain and your worries are gone. Thank you for allowing me to take part of the last few months of your long and beautiful life. It was an honour being your nurse, and please don’t worry about needing my help. You don’t have to feel bad for showing your feelings, those were my favourite moments. They made you wiser, and me too. Don't worry about dropping stuff on the floor or not making it to the bathroom in time. I know you did not do it on purpose. I gladly did all those things for you. I know we’re not supposed to think and feel like that, but you were one of my favourite patients and I will never forget you. Thank you for teaching me so much about life 🍃

A CVC started spraying out blood. A few years ago I would've been disgusted, now I just laughed. Nursing makes you wicked.
