Even after that, I didn't get more of the story until much, much later. I was happy writing my fics and recovering from cancer, then this all unwound. I wasn't going to sit back and have another Ms.Scribe wannabe - in method if not in scale - shit all over another fandom and traipse away with 'lalala it's just the internet so get over it.'

Anon hate, sockpuppetry, threats anon and otherwise, harassment campaigns. Real people got hurt. Real people delivered that hurt. Real people sent anon hate. Real people read those messages and took them to heart. If one of my posts nailed that behavior right in the ass, sorry not sorry. What I can do is tell people how to defend themselves, open up the bag of tricks and drag them into the light, give people the tools to defend themselves against this kind of bullshit, no matter what fandom they're in.

I'm going back to writing my silly little fics, taking care of my recovering and healing body, and playing in my sandbox. I can sleep just fine knowing that I did not remain silent.

Taylor Farms and all the shitty shit they pulled.

What if the story was not really the story, but the part that got all the attention? We all know about Taylor "Explosive Diarrhea" Farms and the ongoing debacle of the cyclospora outbreak concerning shredded iceberg product from Taylor Farms de Mexico. It started officially on June 14 when the first cases were reported and the recall issued on July 17. It is now the end of August and the last onset dates running into middle of the month.

The CDC invites you to believe that there are only 11,000ish confirmed cases linked to Taylor Farms failure to keep shit out of the food chain. The CDC further notes about 17,000 hospital confirmed cases of Cyclospora nationwide, asking us to assume that it's 'the season' for this particular parasite. There are 11,000ish other instances that are still under investigation. Explosive diarrhea from fecal contamination has a season, apparently. However, since Michigan reported over 9,000 cases on its own, I think that while we have confirmed shit in the food supply, we have an egregious amount of bullshit from the feds - CDC, FDA, and USDA. That's three agencies worth of bullshit.

This morning, I happened to read an article by Bill Marler of Marler Clark, a firm specializing in food safety law. Taylor Farms has pulled more shit than previously known. Starting in 2009 with a Salmonella outbreak, no recall, Taylor Farms embarked on a career of distributing food-borne illnesses, some with no public facing recalls at all. The author also confirms that many instances of contamination do not ever make it to the level of enforcement. Read it, then think about the convenience of ready-cut versus two weeks of spraying shit like a hippopotamus.

The new Aerogarden is going pretty well. I have some romaine growing that came with the kit. My sprout jar gives me a bumper crop every Sunday. I already have ideas for other Aerogardens for tomatoes and berries. As convenient as ready cut produce is for me, with my hands in such bad shape, the risk is not worth it. Vote with your health and your wallet, folks. If Taylor Farms won't be punished by the agencies supposed to regulate them, let's not buy. We might not be big enough to make a difference in their quarterlies, but markets might order less when those products don't move.

Bacteria often hog the spotlight when it comes to food-borne infections. Campylobacter, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella are all pretty familiar. Some are tougher to kill than others, and some disinfectants that can wipe out bacteria are going to be ineffective against tough customers like staphylococcus, cryptosporidium, cyclospora and norovirus that can not only contaminate your food, but the surfaces and utensils in your home. There is one reliable disinfectant that can handle almost everything you throw at it.

3% hydrogen peroxide.

Although it has fallen out of vogue treating cuts and scrapes, this readily available disinfectant rips through organic material via oxidization. The foam that you remember from your scraped knee are a sign of just that - oxidization tears apart cell walls, damages the organism's DNA, and dissolves tough proteins. Inexpensive and easy to access from the corner pharmacy, hydrogen peroxide can disinfect fungus, bacteria, viruses, oocytes. Leaving it in contact with the hard and non-porous surface to be disinfected for at least 10 minutes ensures full effectiveness.

Speaking of non-porous surfaces, don't get rid of your wooden cutting boards. Studies have actually shown that by drawing bacteria and other contaminants into the wood, a cutting board may actually be hygienically better than a non-porous plastic board. Using capillary action, a wooden cutting board draws bacteria like salmonella deep inside the board it is starved of moisture and dies. To maintain your board wash by hand with hot soapy water, wipe it down with with a diluted bleach solution, and seal it with a food safe wax or FDA approved mineral oil.

Taylor Farms, logistics, and fecal matter blowback.

Taylor Farms is a textbook case of the shit hitting the fan. The shit hits the fan and being dispersed to the far corners.

Recovering some of the ground. Taylor Farms de Mexico loaded up some iceberg lettuce contaminated with Cyclospora cayetanensis. This is a parasite, not a bacteria, and is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The treatment for a diagnosed case is a rigorous regime of powerful antibiotics. Most cases will never even see the inside of an urgent care clinic or an emergency room. If anything people may have attributed it to something like norovirus or salmonella. It's a safe bet hundreds of thousands of people could have been affected, but never reached a point where they needed medical attention.

The symptoms can take up to 2 weeks to emerge, and can relapse and remit for longer than a month. You may not even know that you are experiencing a relapse.

The thing that makes this so dangerous is not simply that it is a foodborne contaminant, but it may be contaminating something that is incorporated into other foods. Taylor Farms says that it does not include shredded iceberg in its salad kits which are sold in any grocery store that you can think to name. Off the hook? No not really. It's not a fast food/Olive Garden problem, but instead it is now "How many foods is this in?" problem. The shredded iceberg lettuce is not only distributed to restaurants, but other companies that make other products that may include the shredded iceberg. SysCo and Golden State foods supply companies large and small, schools, hospitals, and other institutions. Everything from your local food truck, the ready-made salad or sandwich from the convenience store, or that awesome neighborhood restaurant could have contaminated surfaces or equipment, and maybe some not so good sanitary practices.

I ordered my AeroGarden today. My first attempt at growing will be salad greens and herbs. The institutions that used to protect us from foodborne disease have been gutted over the last 40 years, and I no longer see that it will be remedied. Perhaps some of this shredded lettuce made its way into the House cafeteria or other food service outlets in DC. Since the politicians only seem to move when something actually affects them, perhaps a little suffering is in order. There are some people who I think genuinely deserve projectile diarrhea.

The enshittification of the food chain

So, Taylor Farms makes salad kits. We know that. They make salad kits under store brands for Walmart, Costco, Whole Foods, and Target. They are also the one of the largest suppliers of ready-cut produce to supermarkets like those burger toppings kits or the stir-fry veggie mixes. They also further supply SysCo who owns Restaurant Depot and global supplier Golden State foods. Taylor Farms also directly supplies Taco Bell, KFC, Chipotle, McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster, and Olive Garden. One company, multiple levels of enshittification reaching potential millions of people. Most cases of food-borne illness never make it to the level of hospitalization so 7,000-odd cases of cyclosporiasis.

It's been a rough four weeks, health wise. I was hospitalized for five days in serious condition. Then I got home and developed a hospital-acquired infection for which I was prescribed a course of antibiotics.

I have had food-borne illness before. I really can't chance a GI infection.

Aerogarden looks like a viable and safe option to playing pathogen roulette.
