A Facebook memory popped up today, and I believe in this wholeheartedly still. I find this especially important when it comes to our children and to a lesser extent, our spouses. We are the adults. It is our job to take an interest in what our children enjoy, and encourage them, not force them into being what we believe they should be. You don't need to understand WHY they love what they do, you just need to understand that they DO. They love their hobbies the same as you love yours. My dad and I used to go fishing in his boat. And by fishing, I mean he would fish and I would chill in the boat and watch the birds, for hours. I didn't and still don't enjoy fishing, but I loved trolling in the boat. I found fishing boring. Oh so boring. But chatting with my dad, watching the birds, listening to the water lap against the boat, baiting hooks, and just being there was wonderful. Sure, I'd pick a rod up once in awhile, but again......boring. My dad never MADE me fish, he was just happy to have me there. Had he made me, I would have gotten bored, then I would have gotten cranky, he would have gotten frustrated (although I'm pretty sure that man has the patience of Job) and neither of us would have had any fun. But because he let me do what I enjoyed, he got to do what he enjoyed, and I will have those wonderful memories to cherish. I love walking, just strolling around. Neither of my family members enjoy it. If I force them to go, it's not fun for anyone. But if we go somewhere like Police Point, or Elkwater, somewhere with beautiful scenery and things to look at, they are all over it. The point is, take a vested interest in them, and watch your relationship, and them, grow and flourish. #itsnotalwaysaboutyou #youarenotthesun
