One of the ways transmisogyny manifests is in default-uncharitable interpretations of ambiguous meaning.

Last week I was at a meetup where I was the only transfem. I checked the groupchat when I arrived and there was a message from the organiser: "We have a newcomer called X, can you look out for him if you get there first?" I located X, introduced myself, sent a message to the chat say, "I have located X," and continued to talk to him until the organiser arrived. When the organiser arrived, she was not happy with me. It turned out my phone had autocorrected, "I have located X," to, "I had located X," which the organiser interpreted as me passive aggressively telling her that I had already done the thing she was asking about. Her conclusion: I was unreasonable and aggressive in responding to her reasonable request. My explaining what had happened didn't convince her otherwise.

A different occasion last week: in a local trans groupchat, a trans man sent a link to a drag event happening in our town. A few people said they were already going, some said they might go. Then a trans woman replied saying, "Thanks, but I don't really like drag." Her tone was immediately called into question. Her words were assumed to communicate: "I think you are a terrible person if you like drag," even though she never said that. Several non-transfems who had never even heard that drag might not be universally-beloved by everyone were upset to discover that fact. A trans woman simply saying she didn't like this thing became A Big Deal.

Meanwhile, at a different event again, a trans man told a group that he was straight and attracted to women, but he wouldn't feel comfortable bringing home an "AMAB woman" (yes he actually said that). It was quickly brushed over, and after he had left even trans women tried to defend him by saying "he probably didnt realise people would be offended" etc etc. In contrast to the examples above, he is not even aware that anyone was upset by what he said, never mind worrying about what consequences he might face.

Whenever I go to an event, I often spend the next 24-48 hours ruminating over every single thing I said to check if I did anything at any time that could even vaguely be construed as annoying to anyone. I have often put this behaviour down to severe anxiety, but I think I am realising that it is actually a rational response to a world where even the slightest social misstep could be blown way out of proportion and result in my later social exclusion. It's one of those things that existed long before I was aware of my own transness but while I was nonetheless transmisogynised by society, a crippling fear of the slightest imperfection that I assumed everyone else felt too but apparently they don't. I guess when other people go out of their way to smoothe over the damage your words or actions might cause, you don't need to stress about that damage because there are no consequences to it! It sounds very nice to be able to live like that.

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.

the thing is if you're tme (especially cis) you have to stand up for trans women over and over again. to your parents. your siblings. your classmates. your awful uncle. your co-workers. your friends. your partners. anyone and everyone. don't let it slide when someone offhand calls trans women "biological males". when someone mocks a trans woman's appearance, says trans women shouldn't be allowed in women's sports or bathrooms, when someone they/thems a trans woman, when someone makes an invasive comment about trans women's genitals, when a "joke" is made. i can't tell you how much time i've devoted to educating, arguing with, and calling out my brothers for transmisogyny, how many times i've questioned a peer on a comment, how many times i've told my mother "that's not okay". when i was eleven i argued over gender neutral bathrooms with my parish priest. if you stay silent when trans women are disparaged, attacked, insulted, mocked or misgendered you are spineless and your allyship is transparently false. DEFEND TRANS WOMEN.

With every single sub i have the first thing we ever do is establish the safe word (stoplight system), and the non-verbal safe word in case they can't talk for any reason. If I can't tell where the sub is at, I will ask them point blank what is their color, and if they can't give a response, we stop. The goal is to make the other person feel good, including pain, and the most important part us knowing your subs limits and LISTENING to them. I will *never* hurt a sub in a way that they have not explicitly expresssed interest in.

people act like tme/tma reveals soooo much about a person/reveals agab as if it's not the least revealing option for anyone who isn't tfem.... shut upppppp.

"tme/tma is just asking ppl their agab!!!" if you are nb and you are tme then i have learned nothing about your agab. if you are tmasc i already know. if you are tfem i already know. if you are nb you could be literally any permutation of amab afab intersex whatever crossed with feminine masculine androgynous presentation except a person presenting femininely who was amab. also known as being tfem. and therefore transmisogyny affected.

the only thing being tme reveals is that you aren't tfem. not only are you transmisogynist you are revealing that you think of all nb people as androgynous afabs! transphobia in itself! please think about why you think there's no such thing as an amab nonbinary person.

and notice how nine times out of ten the people upset by tme/tma aren't tfem. and when it IS a tfem she's usually just wishing for a better term.
