if you dont decouple your drive to create from your desire for attention you will go insane. simple as. you will never feel satisfied b/c you will always want more and you will feel perpetually bitter that you did not get what you are “owed”

It’s an unpopular opinion but it is absolutely and completely true. I’ve never seen someone who creates for engagement happy with the engagement they get. I posit they can’t ever be happy that way because it will NEVER be enough

I agree with OP and Manka so very much.

You have to rest in your own desire to create.

But, because I see statements like this turn into a sort of general notion of “it’s bad to want validation or attention or engagement”, and to me, that’s not what this means.

It’s perfectly valid to want people to like and engage with what you create. In a general sense, when you create anything, you do it to share with other human beings. Art, craft, food, anything you create is a way to connect with others through our shared humanity.

And wanting someone to like you fanart or read your fanfic is part of that.

the words used by OP is decouple, and this is important. Nothing wrong wanting engagement. But it cannot be tightly coupled with the drive to create.

legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends

any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.

friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.

someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.

buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.

pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.

people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.

legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Another one of TADC's biggest problems is that it's not what it presented itself as.

At the beginning, we were introduced to six main characters, with Pomni being the most central of them - we entered this world through her perspective. So, naturally, many of us assumed that all six characters would receive focus and development over time; episode 4, which centered on Gangle, seemed to reinforce this expectation.

However after that, the show became more and more centered around Jax. We kept waiting for episodes that would give characters like Ragatha more attention, only to get more Jax. Then, when people criticized this imbalance, the response was essentially that Actually! Jax, alongside Pomni, is the central main character too. If TADC had been marketed from the start as a story primarily about Pomni and Jax, many viewers would have approached it with different expectations. Some people would have been completely fine with that. Others, myself included, might have realized earlier that the show simply wasn't what we were looking for. I wouldn't have been so disappointed! The only group who is happy with this situation is people who like Jax.

We started watching "The Amazing Digital Circus" and ended up with "Jax and Pomni show". Of course many people are upset; we were told to expect an ensemble cast and then told later that those expectations were wrong.

You know what, Gummigoo was more human than any of the humans in the circus combined. He was the only character to actually react with the appropriate level of horror to his existential situation. He actually asked questions, like how valid his 'memories' are if they were just a programmed backstory. He asked why there wasn't a character model of his mother, and if she ever even had a face to begin with. And Gummigoo was an NPC. And then after learning the truth he hides it from his friends because, despite knowing what he knows, he still sees them as people.

And then Pomni just kinda does this 'ehhhh' Seinfeld thing like, well, I kiiiiinda broke his reality? 😅😬🤷‍♀️

I mean, who's the NPC in this situation really? The character who's raw and emotional, or the character who walks around with this quirky-ass dialogue 'well, that just happened. Can he come to the circus?'. 🤡

TADC established all these Chekov's guns and only half of them ever fired, and of the half that fired, most of them were loaded with blanks.

So much respect in that ofc! I must say this now though. I genuinely dislike that ship so much. In AU’s yeah it’s cute, in fanart yeah it’s cute, but cannonly in the show? Bro ts turned “The amazing digital circus” into “the amazing digital situationship and friends”. If I wanted that I can go to school. And have you ever been even in contact with some emotionally unavailable like Jax? I’ve had friends date guys like him and yeah he messed them up BIG TIME. Genuinely why are we trying to traumatize Pomni more than necessary? Funnybunny is actually so toxic it’s concerning. I’m more of a RibbitRabbit and Jesterdoll shipper myself. But in this AU only one is cannon for reasons I won’t explain unless given permission. It’s Jax and ribbit that’s cannon btw But there’s my rant. Bye bye
