you know what gets me about lord of the rings? evil is defeated by people who choose to fight against it without possessing absolute, or even very much, conviction that they can actually win. all the converging story threads that lead to the happy ending are carried out by people who are far, far more convinced that they will fail than that they will succeed, who had only the frailest, most foolish hope, who had blind faith and frequently wavering hearts not peace or ease or certainty.
middle earth isnât saved because no one faltered or came close to despairing or who sank to their knees in weary defeat. itâs not saved by pride or conviction or even strength. itâs saved because enough people do what they have to do even if they have to do it in the darkness. in the dust. with the ashes of hopelessness and bitterness in their mouths. because enough people took another step. Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Aragorn, Theoden, Boromir, Faramir, Merry, Pippin. And many donât. For every hero there is someone who gives into the âreasonablenessâ of despairâSaruman, Denethor, Grima, even Gollumâbut enough. Enough people said âit doesnât matter if we lose, I will keep fightingâ and then they do.
And that GETS me. It is the most hopeful thing about the lord of the rings to me. There is so much that sums up its spirit, so many beautiful quotes and moments, but to me itâs never been the most famous of the quotes about hope and love that hit me hardest but a line from the films. Before the battle for minas tirith, one of the soldiers says âwe cannot defeat the armies of Mordorâ and Theoden answers âno. but we will meet them in battle nonetheless.â
And IâThat is the spirit that leads to the conquering of evil when it comes down to it, when weâre talking about the part played by humanity alone in the fight against evil. Not the conviction youâre going to win, not farsightedness into a perfect future, not perfect inner peace or certainty. But acceptance of the real possibility of defeat, of that defeat being more the reality, the future, of your life than the victory, and then doing the damn thing anyway because goodness is worth fighting for even if you lose.
I think one of the most dangerous things we can do is justify why we should treat marginalized people well. âGay people arenât just interested in sexâ âpeople who use welfare often work multiple jobsâ âsome people are fat because of a health issueâ I actually donât care about any of these things. We shouldnât be treating people inhumanly regardless, and thatâs what weâre fighting for.
No longer allowed to help my dad in the garden because i picked up the shovel and he saw âa gleeful and cruel darkness in my eyesâ
happy early pride im kicking it off with butch lesbian wives from borderlands
Hero, in recognition for your courage and temerity in the face of my absolute evil, I grant thee a ring of maidenification.
this shits gonna flip into a clean 500 gold pieces for sure
Of course it will, should it leave your finger~
my friend you are off your rocker if you think this thing is even getting close to one of my ring slots I know better than to make that mistake after putting on one of your amulets and being turned into a newt for a week
you were really cute as a newt. . .
dishonored really has the sexiest aesthetic ever. thereâs assassins. thereâs witches. thereâs whales. thereâs steampunk tech and shit. a beating heart that tells you peoples darkest secrets. a spooky-looking twink that wonât let you sleep. swarms of rats. itâs just undeniably sexy.
Iâm soooooo embarrassed. My lord told me âgood night,â but I thought he was calling me a good knight, and, well, you could hear it clink against my codpiece.
yesterday my grandma found a penny on the floor and said to my grandpa âthereâs that penny again, pa!â and i absolutely lost my mind because i couldnât shelve the thought of a single panel Far Side comic of two old people on the front porch in the middle of nowhere and a giant penny angrily and inexplicably rolling through the wastes
âthereâs that penny again, pa!â
this is hands down my single favorite post ive ever made that got notes
I sincerely hope that the OP realizes that gramma was very likely quoting that cartoon.

Today, the UK government accepted guidance which excludes trans people from single sex spaces.
This is a change to the interpretation and implementation of the equalities act which legally prevents any trans person from using the correct changing rooms, toilets, or even attending gym classes.
Itâs more than a bathroom ban. Itâs something that will prevent us living our lives.
And, as it stands, the guidance is markedly worse for trans men than it is for trans women.
Taken from page 268 of the pdf linked above:
This guidance sets out, in a legally binding code, that trans men can be barred from both menâs and womenâs facilities.
While it does go on to say that preventing us from accessing any services might be grounds for a discrimination claim, thatâs in direct contradiction to the paragraphs shown above, and right now is purely hypothetical until tested in a court of law.
As the news of the governmentâs decision to enforce this guidance spreads, a lot is going to be said about the impact on trans women. Thatâs good, a lot needs to be said.
I doubt, though, that as much will be said about the impact on trans men. I doubt it because when this guidance was first released as a draft I saw dozens of not hundreds of comments talking about how the only impact was to trans women, joking that trans men should use the womenâs toilets to make transphobes uncomfortable.
Please donât fall into that pattern this time, not now this is really happening.
Protect trans women, please, but I am begging you, protect trans men, too.
This guidance systematically erases us from public life. It is deliberate. We are not collateral damage, we are the target.
Think of us in your anger.
"cis men dni" are you ready to come out of your "no boys allowed" treehouse yet. its time for lunch.
âBecause the truth is, tech doesnât have an image problem. It doesnât have a message problem. It has an intention problem. Whatâs wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasnât successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. Whatâs wrong is that heâs trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product thatâs designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isnât that you havenât told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.â
