I absolutely DESPISE Friede x Spinel.
There's good options ship wise for both characters, but people still choose it over them for the toxic yaoi or whatever. I just don't understand that. (No hate to the shippers whatsoever though, most of them seem chill.)
I agree with this and adding to your point, and lowkey people tend to mischaractise at least one of them when making content. Not all but some, enough that it's a problem.
Again, I do think Spinel had some real appreciation towards Chalce for always helping him. The way his smile reaches his eyes here makes it feel genuine on his end, since "that matter" was likely her old school getting the funds to be reopened and expanded. He was grateful enough to her to bother to repay the favor.
So, I feel her betrayal did actually kinda sting for him.

We, as a society, have to talk about Spinel's insane situationships with older men twice/quarce his age and how, for all intents and purposes, he can be read as a narrative rebound for Lucius.
Spinel: I will surpass Gibeon and achieve more than he ever could've imagined.
Meanwhile, also Spinel: Has no meaningful achievements he can claim as his own, nor does he have the actual motivation to work towards genuine accomplishments and feats on his own merits. All he has is false charisma because he has good looks (ikemen) and is good with words, but it cannot hide how little he has going for him otherwise and how he never got anything on his own merits but rather uses others' talents and accomplishments to his advantage.
SO, the most recent Pokemon Horizons episode was peak. I present to you a Chalce sprite, a.k.a the character that made the episode peak.

It's only a matter of time till Chalce stabs Spinel right in the back, going by her body language and the way she's looking at him during this scene.
(Hopefully tho, it's not because she's better than she lets on -- I feel her supposedly being a kind teacher before feels somewhat ooc. While she doesn't take clear pleasure in it like he does, she's still aided him in attempting to kill the RVT kids several times -- and is just because she's sick of his shit.)
This was what exactly was in my notes. Spinel's methods are becoming more and more reckless and illogical: using the Six Heroes time and time again to eliminate the RVTs, something that has ultimately cost the Explorers their most valuable weapons. Chalce even suggested that Spinel's methods were too overblown in Episode 107.
Likewise, I'm still imagining that this is the reason that Chalce can no longer keep a lid on her discontentment with Spinel, not because she's a good person deep down. It was so refreshing to see a female villain have this much of a ruthless streak. It feels disappointing and incongruent to have her in a caretaker role, after all she's done.
Just the way his expression softens when he pets Umbreon was kinda cute 😂
