So, you basically believe that the bible is a huge folk tale? Do you believe in Jesus Christ, but not the stories in the bible?

I believe the Bible is more than a folk tale. It is a work of great literary value. It was for the most part written down during the Babylonian captivity long after the events it purports to describe would have transpired. It was written by men, probably four men, Hebrew scribes, professional writers, to give the people of Judah a common story to bind them together and to keep them from assimilating into Babylonian society. I might add that it was only partly successful in accomplishing this task.

Since the Hebrews had no foundational myths, the creation myth, the myth of the Garden of Eden and the flood myth were borrowed from Babylonia which in turn borrowed them from Sumer. They were already ancient. The books of Moses were oral traditions copied down and then recopied in Babylon. The books of law were, again, based largely upon the Sumerian Code of Hammurabi Sumer being the first true civilization and the precursor to the Babylonian Empire.

The Prophets were necessary because if you made a contract with God and God promised to protect you and then you are conquered and led off into slavery again and again then you must have some explanation other than “God broke his promise”. So you have prophets saying “see you were warned now look what God has done to you using the ‘nations’ as a tool of punishment”.

I believe that Jesus of Nazareth was a fully enlightened teacher. I do not believe that he was the “son of God” nor do I believe that he ever claimed to be such. I do not believe he is the savior because the whole idea of God becoming human, sacrificing himself through torture and death, to cleanse the world of a sin committed by Adam and Eve (original sin) makes no sense whatsoever. Christians say  ”Jesus died for our sins” yet also say that sinners will go to hell and burn for all eternity.

It makes no sense. What makes sense is “love your neighbor”, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, “consider the lilies and how they grow” and the rest of the ethical and moral teachings of Jesus which so many “Christians” seem to forget.

Faception uses 15 secret classifiers of facial features to accuse subjects of terrorism and pedophilia, as well as predicting their poker abilities.

Faception claims they can do this because, in the words of CEO and Chief Scientist Shai Gilboa, “Our personality is determined by our DNA and reflected in our face. It’s a kind of signal.”

Gilboa says his company will “never” reveal its classifiers, but since they’re only 80% accurate, they should be used as a starting point for security agencies wishing to determine whom to subject to kafkaesque investigation on the basis of the alleged link between DNA and personality.

He also says that an unidentified homeland security agency has bought his technology to help it hunt for terrorists.

No word on whether Gilboa can distinguish warts that reveal secret witches from regular ones.

Equinox from space

March 20th was the Equinox, the day when the sun is directly above the equator and where the North and South Pole both receive equal amounts of sunlight. For the next 6 months the South Pole will be in shadow and the North Pole will receive sunlight.

The Japanese Himawari-8 weather satellite captured this gif/video view of the Earth moving into night over the Pacific Ocean yesterday; this is just about as closely balanced as the planet can get, with both poles receiving just about the same amount of light.
