Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.

If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.

I'VE GOT TO CLEAR THIS UP because it drives me insane how vague Bethesda is about their own lore in-game and the resulting misunderstandings I see in the fandom.

GEN 3 SYNTHS ARE NOT MACHINES. THEY ARE SYNTHETIC HUMANS. THEY ARE ORGANIC except for one electronic component in their brain. It's literally exactly like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/Blade Runner.

The Institute literally builds them as full grown adult organic flesh and muscle and bone human beings, you can see one being constructed in the Institute "robotics" section. (Why is it called Robotics? Who tf knows! There's zero robotics work going on in there!) Father himself calls them "synthetic organics" when explaining to the Sole Survivor why his uncorrupted DNA was needed. And if they were machines, why would DNA be involved whatsoever?

PALADIN DANSE IS NOT A MACHINE. He is a human, albeit an artificially constructed one, but not constructed out of artificial components. He is bone and blood and flesh. Glory is not a machine. Sturges is not a machine.

Additional proof:

A scientist named Dean Volkert can be found speaking to a gen 3 synth in the Institute, you glean from the conversation that the synth is a test subject for a drug/medication that Dr Volkert is testing called K-14. You can't test drugs on robots. Gen 3 synths are organic human beings.

I've been part of this fandom for years and I've never seen this confusion consistently get addressed, and I was unsure about it myself for many playthroughs. So I wanted to clear this up. Because yes, it's confusing, but after 11 years of playing this game I'm confident I've got this part of the lore figured out.

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

We write for ourselves, but we post for others.

(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)

So there’s this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,

and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing

but i also think:

“i write for myself, but i post for others.”

because posting fic is not only self-expression. it’s social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.

people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,

and i don’t think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. there’s something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:

“ok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.”

especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,

and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.

And i think that’s why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,

and then it’s like,

does anyone see me? does anyone even care?

THIS. Exactly this. I think it is so important that we begin to encourage a culture and community of this, when it is KIND, because like, at the end of the day, yes, my view counter goes up, but is it the same people? Do they have thoughts and feelings about this thing I poured my soul into?

Imagine you've gone on a trip and you want to share the photos and people just look at them. They say NOTHING. They might give you one smile and a nod. You're trying to share and connect with them, but there is no connection because from your point of view, it is one sided.

Or, if you've written a composition for a class, and you get a 'complete' in the gradebook, and the teacher just shrugs and says "I read it, isn't that enough?" when you ask for feedback or you ask what they thought about it.

People don't need essays about the way your work affected them (but tbf, we LOVE those), just to have more than an icon, a number, a little faceless blip on the screen. I want to know WHAT connects so I know where I am succeeding, what is connecting, HOW the story is coming across, if you love my stupid little blorbos, because I love them and I want you to love them, too.

If someone's work connects with you, connect back. It's free. It's FUN, because I LOVE responding to comments. You build a community rather than a creator- passive consumer relationship and in this capitalist hellscape nightmare, I think it is something we all need, artists especially.
