I feel like when people discuss Zelda’s character in OOT they just kind of forget that Zelda is Sheik. Like they know Sheik and Zelda are the same but they don’t really factor in Sheik’s dialogue and actions as part of Zelda’s characterization. People act like OOT’s Zelda is bland, but only take into account child Zelda and her appearance at the end of the game.

All those poetic lines Sheik drops tells you more about Zelda and how she views things. “The flow of time is always cruel” not only applies to Links circumstance but also what Zelda has been through in the 7 years Links been gone.

She isn’t just someone who pops up at the end of game. The woman literally became a trained ninja and repeatedly appears to Link to help him.

In today's installment, Link reconnects with his past, for better and worse. And has, like, half a good day.

Twenty minutes later Link was galloping full-tilt up the slopes of Elma Knolls, where New Castle Town had yet to sprawl—unspoiled wildflower meadows and quieted settlement ruins, rising pines and skittish deer scattering at their approach. The way the wind moved through his hair and cotton work shirt felt like breath entering his lungs after sinking underwater. And with that force of possibility beneath him, propelling him forward, it was as if all that had ever brought him joy—Kokiri Forest still damp with dew, sparkling beetles pinched between a Princess’s fingers, the shrieks of delight from a firecracker comet of a girl nailing every jump she’d set up in her ranch arena—weren’t lost, not when the feeling still lived within him, quieted but not gone.

They spent the late afternoon up on Lindor’s Brow, beneath a grove of apple trees that suited them just fine for a late lunch. While the prize mare nosed her way along the creek, Link laid back in the grass, staring up at the sky the way he had every day for eleven years and then very suddenly, never again. The flawless blue and pillowy white clouds peeked through the lush green leaves of the orchard’s canopy. 

And far beyond, brushing up against the islands from where his people were said to have tumbled haphazard and witless into their destined kingdom, a lithe, winding silver body crowned with molten horns sighed fire while it ran its endless heavenly loop. Its spindly talons languidly stretched and clawed into the empty air, as if bracing for a landing that would never come. 

His right hand closed over his left wrist like a manacle, and he forced his focus away from the sacred majesty, back to the benign beauty of Hyrule’s emerald foliage. He had stopped pointing out the creatures years ago, when he was an accidental Hylian boy in an eternal child’s forest, and seeing dragons was another point that made him an outsider. 

Then he’d glimpsed Hylia’s light, and learned exactly what divinity cost a mortal.
